one of the funniest riverdale criticisms is “it got bad and cringey after season one” because a) it’s camp and you guys are just boring, but mainly b) these are all lines from the first episode. this show has always know what it’s about.
riverdale + green
the thing about riverdale is that its laura palmer is both jason and archie. and while jason gets to be this personal that is both preserved in teenage innocence and dissected for his secrets because he is dead, archie is subjected to the same treatment alive. his personality is reduced to the traits others force onto him (to jughead for example he is the pinnacle of heroism and selflessness and therefore he must live up to those standards) or the secrets they tear him apart for (cheating, organized crime affiliation, violent tendencies). every action he takes is grandiose and reveals more about the town at large/the people surrounding him than it necessarily reveals about himself because archie is more of a concept than a person to the other characters. archie died at sixteen, preserved as the sexually motivated but pure-hearted center of the town, and every thing he does is either in service of that image or a direct betrayal of it, causing him to question his own identity/self-worth and letting down all of his friends and family. archie and jason occupy similar roles in the narrative, but archie is alive to endure the pain that comes with this forced archetyping.
and everybody thinks they know archie best and will make grand claims about what is good for him and what his intentions and desires are but rarely if ever do they ask him any of these things. his voice does not matter because a corpse cannot speak. a corpse does not want anything beyond what other people want for it. a corpse cannot know itself. but the people around it can know it. and can claim increasing degrees of closeness and understanding to it. riverdale is about what other people want for archie. the threat they see in archie. the hero they admire in archie. he can be romanticized, idolized, vilified, etc because in death you do not need to have nuance. and oftentimes you are not afforded nuance.
My roommate and I finished riverdale like a week ago and as we were watching it there were a bunch of lines that made us lose our shit so once we finished the show they went back and compiled every single one of them into this absurd 7 minute long video. I feel like y'all would enjoy this over here.

riverdale yuri: kiss it kiss it!
when riverdale had two sapphic femmes in a relationship perform sugar daddy (a song about power dynamics, gender roles, and crossdressing in gay male relationships) by sexualizing themselves through dance in front of their principal (played by an actor who was one half of the first gay kiss on live action network tv) for the purpose of protesting the censorship and prevention of queer-centric material from being performed at their high school variety show on the premise of it being “inappropriate”… the layers were insane there. that was camp. and vanessa morgan deserved a grammy
