Hello Jesus Christ Superstar Nation. My amazing wonderful roommate who I love so very much was talking with me about JCS and mentioned hearing about a version of the show where everyone is a microbe on Jesus’s body. Do you know about this? I need this solved desperately. This is so confusing.
That would be the Los Angeles Universal Amphitheater prod (1972). It was directed by Tom O’Horgan, who also directed the Original Broadway production in 1971. The LA prod was an evolution of the Broadway one, where O’Horgan envisioned the cast as being a futuristic insect society who were forming their own religion (ALW famously hated it). O’Horgan then adapted his ideas for the Universal Amphitheater, which was an outdoors venue. The result was a set that featured three stone outcroppings and a gigantic cloth-covered cross— the former represented the decaying head and hands of Jesus.
A variety of (reportedly, since we have no footage) stunning set pieces were produced from this, such as Judas being swallowed by the giant head’s mouth for his death and Jesus being crucified on the giant cross. For more context, check out this Reddit post which also links a bunch of images from the prod.
EVERY TIME I LOOK AT YOU I DON'T UNDERSTAND

Can you show me now that I would not be killed in vain? Show me just a little of your omnipresent brain

I JUST MET TED NEELEY????? AND YVONNE ELLIMAN????
is there a version of jesus christ superstar where jesus isn’t white that i can sink my teeth into and make fanart for
There’s some really great Korean prods of JCS out there. The 2018 Lyric Opera prod (based on the Regent’s Park version) features Heath Saunders as Jesus, who is pretty great. There’s also the upcoming Hollywood Bowl event with Cynthia Erivo as Jesus to look forward to.
THIS LINEUP IS INSANE HELLO????????
I recently saw a production of Jesus Christ Superstar where Herod was played by a ten year old
since they went with a modern aesthetic for the production (the roman guards were clearly modeled off of ICE agents and the prologue showed some of the apostles helping a refugee family sneak into Jerusalem) i fully expected Herod to be modeled off of Trump or Musk, but tbh having him be a literal child in a crown and gold high-top sneakers took me OUT
it also made for an interesting change in Jesus's actions during "King Herod's Song" because in most productions, Herod is the ONE person Jesus has absolutely nothing but contempt for, he refuses to answer any of his questions and just gives him a stony silent stare through the whole song, which makes sense since Herod is a petty, murderous tyrant
but in this production, Jesus looked outright distressed and horrified to see a kid with this much power acting so cruelly, and there was one bit where Herod started waving a pistol around, both at Jesus and his servants, and Jesus was quietly trying to take the gun away from him but was unable to grab it
like it was overall just a really interesting take on the scene!
other things from this production i really liked (and it was local, so sorry, people asking for a slime tutorial!):
the set design had several propaganda posters with right wing slogans (anti-trans, pro-deportation, anti-abortion, pro-book burning, etc) covering the walls, having been painted over and vandalized with progressive slogans by jesus's followers
a large portion of the cast was trans, including jesus, and many of the costumes were gender non-conforming, especially among the apostles and jesus's followers
jesus's vibe in this production was very "community organizer in way over his head" and overall they leaned into the "leftist infighting" take on the apostles
"can we start again please?" was a candlelight vigil for jesus held outside of pilate's by the apostles
easily the most horrifying depiction of the temple i've seen; rather than going the usual route of "brothel" or "drug trafficking" that i've seen other modern productions do, this one portrayed it as straight-up human trafficking, with some of the victims being the refugee family we saw in the prologue. it was genuinely frightening to the point of it being a relief when jesus comes in and starts flipping tables
both judas and mary magdalene are present for the scene where jesus is mobbed and assaulted by the beggars, both looking increasingly upset, and mary is about to run over and interfere before jesus pushes them off himself. jesus breaks down in mary's arms while judas goes to see the pharisees
they super leaned into the mary magdalene-jesus-judas love triangle take, but to be fair, what other way is there to do it?
possibly my favorite version of "john 19:41". after the crucifixion and jesus's death, judas's spirit enters dressed in white, helps jesus off the cross, and the two hold hands and walk offstage into the light together. overall the production played jesus as having already forgiven judas's betrayal before it even happened.

At the performance of Jesus Christ Superstar today, our Jesus' handheld mic (his only source of amplification) completely died.... immediately after Judas' kiss
What a diabolical, thematic technical error
For easter, some of my favorite JCS Judases since i've never made this kind of lineup and over the years i've seen a few artists make this for their faves
I’m going to *remembers suicide jokes are bad for mental health* god thy will be done. Take your only son.
