Gender Violence over the Lifecycle

I'm a student at the University of Hawaii Manoa in a SOC 446 class, which is about gender violence. Mid twenties. From Las Vegas, NV. Family Resources major minoring in Sociology. This website focuses on three aspects of gender violence; discrimination against gay marriage, gender equality, and sexual assault. I found it hard to just narrow it down to one topic as these topics are areas of concern in my mind.

Break Free - Ruby Rose

I loved watching this video, it was extremely creative and unique. The short video depicts what it is like to be a transgender person and being different from the status quo. I loved the intro to film, the music, and the message that is being portrayed. Despite a person’s biological gender individuals have the right to be themselves. This means transgender males and females standing behind their beliefs and being proud to show their true colors. We should respect everyones sexual preference, because after all we all are human. I hate how gender roles hold so many men and women back from fulfilling their full potential. Just be yourself and what makes you feel happy despite others opinions. Live your life with no regrets and always stay positive.

Sexual Assault In Today’s Society

Sexual assault is described as any form of sexual contact or behavior without the consent of the recipient. This means child molestation, rape, groping, incest, attempted rape, and torturing someone in a sexual manner. I feel as if our society looks at sexual assault as something that will always continue through out time. Instead of promoting the need stop sexual assault incidents, we blame the victims of these crimes for putting themselves in a situation to be assaulted. Sexual assault is a huge issue not only in the U.S., but world wide. Sexual assault can happen to men, women, and children of any age. Sexual assault victims are not just women or girls. Men who are sexually assaulted most of the time are assaulted by another male. This leads me to believe that  personal issues within men are to blame for the vicious cycle of assaults.

Their is a myth that sexual assault only occurs to women, this is not true. Men are also sexually assaulted sometimes by women, but for the most part mainly other males. It's sad that many of these male victims feel as if they can not speak out or seek justice.

Telling your son not to “be such a girl” lets his sister who overhears the conversation know that being a girl is not a good thing and she should be sorry and ashamed of herself.

It also reminds your son that being a boy is better than being a girl and therefore he is better than any girl he will ever meet.

I really enjoyed reading this post. I think this is commonly looked over. Parents should really make an effort to stop telling their sons to "quit acting like a girl" or other similar phrases

“Men in Iran are wearing hijabs in a display of solidarity with women across the country who are forced to cover their heads in public. Wearing a headscarf is strictly enforced by so-called ‘morality police’ in Iran and has been since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. 

Women who do not wear a hijab or are deemed to be wearing 'bad hijab’ by having some of their hair showing face punishments ranging from fines to imprisonment.  State-funded adverts appearing on billboards in Iran present those who do not cover their hair as spoiled and dishonourable. 

Women are also told that by not complying, they are putting themselves at risk of unwanted sexual advances from men. But women are leading protests against enforced hijab across the country and some have resorted to shaving their hair in order to appear in public without wearing a veil. 

Over the last week, a number of men have appeared in photos wearing a hijab with their wife or female relative next to them who have their hair uncovered. 

The images come in response to a call by Masih Alinejad, an Iranian activist and journalist living in New York, who is urging men to support her campaign against enforced hijab. “

This Ted talk was one that caught my attention. It might me lengthy, but it's worth the watch. Depeekia Bharadwaj brings up some valid points about men facing injustice when it comes to being accused to sexual assault in some cases. Society often will take a woman's side a majority of the time when she claims to have been sexually assaulted before all the evidence is overlooked.

This video was very disturbing. The shooting at the Orlando, Florida gay nightclub on June 12, 2016 left 49 dead and 53 others wounded. This senseless act of violence is considered as a hate crime toward gays.

I think this message says it all, "stop blaming victims" when it comes to sexual assault. It's always the victims fault for putting his or herself in the situation, instead of saying stop sexual assaults. Or we should even ask ourselves what makes our society believe that sexual assault is a norm, and why people believe sexual assaults will never end?

Gay and Lesbians in Sports

Personally I play football at division one university and I can see how my teammates are extremely homophobic. My teammates play around loosely with words such as “fag”, “queer”, and “homo.” Any activity that is usually perceived as being to feminine, results in a teammate being labeled as one of these terms. I feel bad that someone who may actually be gay on a football team will face tremendous discrimination and hate from other teammates. A testosterone driven sport such as football, makes many men think their is no room for homosexuality or soft-feminine behavior. It’s funny because I’ve noticed that my school and a majority of other college women’s basketball teams have openly lesbian players and no one seems to have an issue with it. I even know a lesbian couple that played on the same team on my women’s basketball team. It makes me question why some sports look down on gay and lesbians and others could care less.
