Pool after pool of crystal clear North Island river, sadly only 1 fish sighted in over 2 km of water due to silt from a slip at the source 2 weeks prior. New Zealand does hold some ideal trout water, however much of the waters in some regions like this one are not self sustained trout habitats and require stocking from local fish and game. Also trout and salmon being an introduced species around a century ago has had a negative impact on native fish and invertebrates via predation. This is a contributing factor to my theory on the slow decline of trout size, condition and population since their explosion onto the scene in New Zealand a century ago, when 20 lb trout and 40 lb salmon were the norm. "Start em young" It wasn't the warmest of days, either way I had half the day off work to hang out with a very curious and happy 9 month old boy. With a baby bjorn, 4 weight bvk, and my favorite home tied creation we landed a slabby stocked bow out of a local reservoir, quick photo, release, rice cracker reward, then off to pick up mummy from her day off. A day for the memory banks for sure.
