HISTORY,CIVIC LIFE - Marcus Garvey Park, Manhattan
Marcus Garvey Park is one of the oldest public squares in Manhattan, New York.Central to the life of Harlem for more than 150 years, the park is an example of integrating a historic natural setting into the fabric of the modern city. Marcus Garvey Park, to this day, continues to be a unifying element for the community who once fought to keep it.
1) Within the neighborhood of Marcus Garvey Park, I started to map out the public buildings ranging from the New York Public Library, schools, churches and a hospital. There is much interaction of public facilities as can be seen which raises a question as to the typical crowd concentration in and around the park, the crime levels in the vicinity.
2) Even without a historical timeline, the Historical district zoning relationship with the park starts to unfold the layers of history that speaks about the creation of the park. Crossroads of inherited and quantitative commons?
John_Jesfae_EX3A_07192016 (Re uploaded)
After some investigation to figure the commons in my site, I have identified CIVIC LIFE (material commons)- roads, subway routes, bridges, public parks in the neighbourhood;
HISTORY (Inherited commons) - the story behind one of the oldest parks in New York City.
RECREATION (immaterial and material commons) - spaces created by man like the Playgrounds, Pelham recreation centre, swimming pool, Rodgers amphitheatre, basketball courts aimed at fostering community spirit within the neighbourhood.
4th July 2016 - Revised video upload with rendered images.
I have started my grasshopper journey, exploring techniques while trying to name the commons in my site. I plan on adding more detail to my model (subway routes, elevated railway lines, bridges) and will be updating at the earliest. Due to multiple times of crashing of my file while trying to patch the topography surface, I spent quite a lot of time trying to fix this before proceeding. Now that it is resolved, I will continue on detailing out my fragment.
Posted above are some updated images for the Exercise 2A. There were some technical problems rendering these images in V-ray which will be sorted out hopefully tomorrow.
04th July 2016 - The above post has been updated with the rendered images of the overall Axonometric view, Urban Sections (zoom in scale and at large scale). I am currently working on adding more detail to the views in rhino.
Marcus Garvey Park is one of the oldest public squares in Manhattan. Central to the life of Harlem for more than 150 years, it has served as a meeting place for people and a holy place for members of local churches.
For analyzing the ‘civic life’ and ‘recreation’ types of value, I have added in datasets such as :
1) Roads, subway routes, elevated railway lines, buildings, bridges
Since ‘civic life’ primarily pertains to the facilities and infrastructure provided by the government and municipal corporations for common people. I have tried to capture the buildings around the park with public facilities - working further to highlight these.
2) Parks in the vicinity, community garden spaces, hydrology area
Physical manifestations in the context of the site to relax and engage with the spaces and activities provided within. Which of these green spaces are actually used for recreation? Are all of these spaces easily accessible? Are these spaces well-maintained?
