“How’s it going in there?” She questioned, after a few moments of silence. Just as she was about to peek in, he rushed past her and toward the back door. Devon stood still, not wanting to risk the yucky spider jumping out of his hands and on to her barely covered body.

 Blinking a few times at his offer, the brunette gave him a perplexed look. “You want to give me a piggy back ride– in my towel?” Glancing down at her bare feet, she realized that there was a chance she possibly could come across another insect and really, he was only trying to save her from that situation. Without further hesitation, she made herself comfortable on his back. “Forgive me for what I’m about to do, Caldwell.” Slipping her towel down to her waist, in hopes of covering as much of herself as she could, she pressed her upper body against his back, ignoring how awkward it was.

Stopping in the doorway to the bathroom, Jesse reluctantly stood upright, feeling Devon slide off of his back with minor difficulty. Averting his eyes as she adjusted her towel, it had wriggled itself down her body, Jesse felt his face flushing a pale pink. He cleared his throat. “S’that all I can do for you, princess?”

James laughed alongside him. It was odd to her, in a way. For so long, she had considered Jess to be someone she admired from a far. He was always more of Joel’s friend, not hers. To be sitting here next to him, talking to him, getting to know his true self, it was indeed peculiar, but yet comfortable. As if they had been doing it for their entire life. “And give away all my secrets?” She teased with an arched brow. “I would never.”

“I take that as a bad sign,” Jesse faked a wince. “And I wouldn’t doubt your dirt, if you chose to reveal it. The quiet ones like you, you lot are the dangerous ones. You see and hear everything.” His eyebrows arched high, eyes poised in an unflinching squint, as if to read her mind.

“I didn’t really peg anyone for anything back in school. I was…kind of out of it back then.” She shrugged. “But, to me, it sounds like that’s what you wanted everybody to think. Y'know, I was quiet back then, but that didn’t keep me from seeing things.” Her smile resurfaced. “You always had your nose stuck in that notebook of yours.” Another chuckle that came along with a small sigh afterwards. “You’ve got plenty more to offer than that I’m sure, but okay. I’ll play along if that’s what you really want.”

“You kind of were...” Jesse agreed, “Our resident Princess Belle, always accompanied by a book and always blowing off us townsfolk.” Jesse bumped his shoulder into Jamie’s body lightly, accompanying his friendly action with a mild chuckle. “If your humanity-detector is so fine-tuned, can I ask what else you’ve perceived of our little group?”

“It’s not actually like you’re rescuing the spider, Jess, you’re rescuing me. If the spider happens to find a happy home in the process who are we to deny that. Come on, please.” She pouted, holding tightly on to the fabric of the towel, which admittedly was much too small for her taste.

“Don’t push your luck, Dev.” Jesse mumbled, still struggling to distract himself from her admittedly skimpy towel. He held a hand to stop her in the frame of the door, indicating that she fall back in the hallway while he braved the beast. Wadding up some toilet paper, Jesse’s arm swung towards the spider, catching it swiftly in his paper-lined fingers. Cupping both hands, Jesse rushed to the back door and released the culprit onto the balcony of the puny back porch. Turning on his heel, he made his way to the hallway and nodded to Devon. “Your carriage ride back to your kingdom, princess,” Jesse smirked and bent down, letting Devon jump on his back.

She giggled slightly as she gave him another shrug. “I guess he has rubbed off on me just a tad.” The snort that escaped her couldn’t be helped. James narrowed her eyes over at him before shaking her head. Even though this was a routine between them, the flirtatious teasing, she could still feel her cheeks get hot. She knew it didn’t mean anything, but it was impossible to stop. “Although, I’m highly impressed with your sense in literature and–err–charm, that’s not it at all. I just think there’s more to you than you let on to believe.”

Watching the flush of crimson that lined James’s cheeks and observing the dip of her gaze brought Jesse immense pleasure. He felt comfortable with the upper hand; being the one to make Jamie nervous suited him so much better than vice versa. “Most didn’t expect the brains for English, that’s for sure.” Jesse’s laugh was finally natural. “In high school, I ‘spose, you never would’ve pegged me for a lover of words. Or anything besides booze and girls.” With a fond snort, Jesse’s face suddenly grew very pensive. “So- booze, girls, intellect; those are my defining qualities, Miss Hardesty, in a way you were right. It wasn’t just assholery.”

“Do you ever get feelings for people?” she asked, glancing over at him again. “Not romantic feelings or anything like that, but more of a vibe, I suppose.” she paused briefly, her smile returning. “I just have a feeling about you.”

Jesse couldn’t stifle the snort that he expelled. “Good intuitions, lionhearted belief.. It’s no wonder you and Joel are tighter than Spandex.” He couldn’t help himself. He had such a difficult time understanding how people held onto such ideals with an iron grip. “I think your Spidey sense is just caught on my uncommonly good looks, Miss Hardesty. And my impressive verse in great literature.” The flirtations rolled off of his tongue with ease- because this is what Jess excelled in doing, brushing off the things that perplexed him.

Although, truth be told, it wasn’t the exact answer she wanted to hear, James kept that famous grin of hers on her face. She let her hands fall, still keeping her gaze on him. “Wanna know something?” she asked, leaning in slightly. “I don’t think you will.” With a scrunch of her nose, she leaned back against her chair, letting her eyes fall back at the front of the bus. “I believe in you, Jess.”

Jesse was perplexed. Typically packed with a sarcastic punch and a sharp-witted tongue, he was finally at a loss for words. Even Joel hadn’t displayed such blatant belief in him during one of their first exchanges. “Can I ask why?” Was all he could fathom to say. His voice was streaked with a tense sort of vulnerability, like the door was cracked open.

Once silence fell upon them, James immediately regretted ever asking that silly question. She wished she could take it back, pretend that she never asked anything. Instead, she awkwardly sat there, angry at herself for her big ol mouth. Then, he spoke. She listened to him intently, letting his words sink in. She frowned slightly, wondering how in the world he could think of himself that way. Once he finished, she clasped his head, turning his face toward her ever so gently to force his gaze on hers. “You listen to me, Jesse Caldwell, and listen to me well,” her voice was earnest, yet lighthearted. “You are a good person.”

An odd, off-beat laugh fled Jesse’s mouth in a hurry. His mind was absolutely blank; how did one respond to such sincerity from a mere acquaintance? He felt so exposed in that moment, and he found it hard to meet Jamie’s eyes. “S’easy for you to say, James, I haven’t found the golden opportunity to fuck you over yet!” Jesse maintained a lightheartedness in his voice, though he was absolutely serious in sentiment.

Noticing his body language, James immediately retracted her hand before placing back on her side. She knew it wasn’t personal, and took no offensive. Instead, she just gave him another smile. “You’re telling me, but it wouldn't’ be the Joey we know and love if he didn’t drag us all down.” Letting her eyes fall to the ground, she kept quiet for a moment before speaking again. “Do you ever think we’ll find it? Love, I mean.” She took note at how serious her tone sounded and quickly tried to make it more lighthearted. “I just mean do you ever think we’re gonna have that whole Notebook moment? Feeding swans, kissing in the rain, crying. Oh, gosh, so much crying. Who’d want that?”

“He’s something else entirely, our Joel...” Jesse chuckled once more. His face turned to stone as James spoke tentatively, his jaw setting in a hard line and his eyes darting downward. Her words floated in the air between them for a moment while Jesse tried to articulate his thoughts- but how could this even be describable? His feelings toward it all, did he even know them himself? Donning an air of nonchalance, the man laughed forcefully, his eyes tracing the pattern on the back of the bus seat in front of him. “People like you and Joel- you’ll be fine. Good people, they get those things. The ;eternal happiness’ bullshit. Not bullshit-” He retracted this instantly, feeling it was too try-hard, “not for people like the two of you. You’re going to get amazing things, both of you. I think that stuff is real for the people who deserve it.”
