Witches in rural Discworld do everything. They're de facto country doctors, midwives, morticians, veterinarians, small claims court judges, food pantries, emergency services, just whatever. And 90% of it isn't even magic (though they can do incredible things), it's working hard and helping people and being respectable and a good person and making everyone a little bit afraid of you.

(Meanwhile all those venerable wizards up at Unseen University are like, accidentally opening portals to faraway lands or creating new gods or becoming obsessed with Music With Rocks In and basically being chaotic and useless, I'm just saying)

Witches are what happen when people recognize the importance and utility of People Who Know Things.

Wizards are what happens when society recognises that some people Know Things, but don't care enough about other people to be more useful than dangerous.

Fantasy culture that abhors magic but is built on the services of witches. If an outsider brings this up, they just look puzzled and say "but she's a witch, not a Magic User" because 1- most people don't actually see witches doing magic, so they may genuinely not be aware that witches can, and 2- there's a genuine cultural distinction between Magic User (person who throws around fireballs and summons demons for coke orgies) and Witch (person who knows a lot of stuff and can get shit done, but they're generally benevolent, so we make sure to not give them a reason to be malevolent instead)

Person who lives in that society who is actually a wizard who can literally light your ass up from a mile away, but gets the program and so very carefully asserts that "no, I am not a wizard, I am a Witch. Understand?"

i cannot stress enough that because of how social media and communications platforms work, if you put something out into the world people will 1) see it 2) react to it and maybe even 3) reply publicly. unless it is a private journal or such, you should accept that if you put something out there that is inherently divisive, you will receive comments that may make you unhappy.

if you blaze a post (force randos to see it) intended for an inherently niche audience (fanfiction consumers), that's one thing. appending "minors dni" to what should be a perfectly innocuous post while also fucking blazing it (again, forcing randos to see it, including minors), will get you made fun of. doubly so if this leads people to look at your fanfics, and quadruply so if said fanfics are omegaverse stories about real people

The fact that there's an actually functional website for the library of Babel is one of those things that fucks me up more and more the more I think about the implications.

So, if anyone hasn’t encountered the concept of the library of Babel, the idea comes from a story of the same name by Jorge Luis Borges, which is set inside a seemingly infinite library which contains every possible combination of letters, periods, commas and spaces that fits within 410 pages.

So like... It isn’t THAT out there that someone was able to make a digital version of it. Making an algorithm that randomly generates every possible combination of those 29 characters within that space and making a website that lets you explore those combinations are things that are pretty squarely within the scope of things you’d expect someone to be able to make a computer do.

But it begins to get pretty out there when you start thinking about all the things that are technically contained there (and that someone randomly browsing it could THEORETICALLY stumble upon) just by virtue of being one of those possible combinations of letters, spaces, commas, and periods.

Somewhere in that website there IS a book that specifically mentions me by full name before giving an accurate, excruciatingly detailed, 410-page long physical description of me. There’ also many more books that SEEM to be that but are actually factually inaccurate. There’s also versions of all of those containing every possible combination of every possible typo, spelling mistake, and grammatical error.

Somewhere in that website there IS a book that’s a perfectly accurate prediction of how and when I will die narrated in third person over the course of 410 pages. There’s also a book that contains the exact same events narrated in first person. Not only for me, but for every person in the world. There are many more that claim to be that but are actually inaccurate.

Somewhere in that website there IS a book that’s completely blank except for the world’s funniest dick joke written right at the end of the very last page.

But chances are no one browsing that website is EVER going to see any of that because for every book we would consider useful, interesting, or even intelligible there are millions upon millions upon millions more that are just completely full of gibberish from cover to cover.
