I know that we often think of Shavuot as cheese/cheesecake day... But the day is a Celebration of Ruth (well King David, but we have to read the Megillat Ruth for that).

So Chag Shavuot Sameach to all Jewish Converts and those converting, our Gerim Tzedek. Thank you for loving Judaism and Jews so much that you felt compelled to be one of us, and importantly thank you for an excuse to make and eat cheesecake every year.

וַתֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּה֙ שָׁ֣בָה יְבִמְתֵּ֔ךְ אֶל־עַמָּ֖הּ וְאֶל־אֱלֹהֶ֑יהָ שׁ֖וּבִי אַחֲרֵ֥י יְבִמְתֵּֽךְ׃

So she said, “See, your sister-in-law has returned to her people and her gods. Go follow your sister-in-law.”

But Ruth replied, “Do not urge me to leave you, to turn back and not follow you. For wherever you go, I will go; wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God.

Currently rereading The Hobbit, and I swear it's like Tolkien took every antisemitic stereotype and caricature that was being used to dehumanize Jews during this time and put them onto the dwarves but turned them on its head to make them traits to be admired. I already knew he was a badass for telling the Nazis to go fuck themselves, but this just makes me love his work more.

The style of basketry resembles that of the Tihamah region of western Yemen. the haftarah reading this week was from I Samuel Ch 20, the section in which Jonathan tells David to flee his father's royal court and gets a spear thrown at him for protecting/defending David:

(30) Saul flew into a rage against Jonathan. “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman!” he shouted. “I know that you side with the son of Jesse—to your shame, and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness!

(31) For as long as the son of Jesse lives on earth, neither you nor your kingship will be secure. Now then, have him brought to me, for he is marked for death.”

and the thing is. this story can be retold any number of times and I will cheer for each interpretation but none of them can match the power of the original
