Don’t be a dick!
Some TV shows are not like any others…
There are so many TV shows out there, some might say that there are too many. I will not be the judge of the amount but what I will mention is that there are so many that we have put them into categories. There are the crime-category where we follow one or more people with a knowledge that is specific enough to make that/those person(s) into a story about someone who fights crime in an unusual way, there is the friends-category where we follow a group of friends while they fall in and out of love, sometimes with an added feature of for example a hospital environment to add another layer in the plot line, we have the hero-category where (super)heroes save the day by using their special power and then there are the shows that doesn’t really fit in anywhere, the stories and plot lines can change at any moment and anything can happen…
These TV shows are usually the underdog when we get to the renewal-season for TV shows, and usually when a show is not renewed it is because of a too small fanbase, not because it is too doll or the story is too complex. By now anyone reading this should have guessed that I’m thinking about “Timeless” in this situation, but there is a reason why the last few lines in the above paragraph is in plural.
I have come across several TV show that doesn’t really fit into any category, but maybe they actually fit into the same category?
The once I can think of right now is:
Supernatural
The librarians
Firefly
The pretender
Leverage
Timeless
SUPERNATURAL (2005- ) At first it was about monsters but after the the universe of Supernatural was established, it became a story about family.
THE LIBRARIANS (2014- ) A group of people that were outcasts in ‘the real world’ because of their great knowledge within specific areas, is forced to work together to save the real- and the magical world and in the end finding, in each other, a family.
FIREFLY (2002) A group of people helping each other, by accepting each other’s differences and thereby becoming a family.
THE PRETENDER (1996-2000) A corporation isolated a very young boy and exploited his genius for their corruptive work, 30 years later the boy (now man) escapes. While trying to find his real family he reveals secrets about the corporation to the people trying to catch him and in doing so he makes them want to be his family.
LEVERAGE (2008-2012) They are thieves each with specific techniques, helping the people with no one else to turn to, to take down the rich and powerful and in doing so they find themselves in need of each other because they have become a family.
TIMELESS (2016- ) Three people sets out to stop a man destroying the present by going back in time, the changes in the past affects the present and the bond between the three people becomes as strong as if family.
I think that shows like these are the hardest to write but still some of the shows I have mentioned are definitely not short. The storyline of each show are nothing like each other but still the shows are about the same thing: Family and family first.
The theme 'Family’ is also why I think the a show can stay in people’s mind even 17 years after is was canceled, as is the case for “The pretender”, simply because it sort of becomes a member of your own family. That is why I think we love the shows so much and are not willing to give up on them just like that, some examples of that can be seen on the bookshelves: The story of “Firefly” has continued in comic books since it was canceled in 2002 and a few years ago the creators of “The pretender” started writing novels to give the story a rebirth.
I don’t think there is a lot of shows out there like the once I have mentioned above, and I’m glad there is not because it makes them more special.
These gems in the sea of so many TV shows makes it hard for them to survive, the complexity and differences in each storyline and in the show in general makes it hard to sell the show to a production company and that I think is the worst fact about all this. When the show is finally sold, it must get a big fanbase in order to survive, if it doesn’t it will die. In my list above only half are still alive.
I don’t think the world is ready to lose another gem, and luckily we proved that by teaming up and convincing NBC to give us back “Timeless”, I hope the fanbase will grow and be just as loyal as the fanbase for “Supernatural” because I think shows like “Timeless” are important, not just because this show teaches us about history and the importance of getting things done right and about family (off course), but also because it enhances the nerd-community that in many years have been looked down on as a thing for losers, but what many people haven’t realized yet is that pretty much everyone in the world are nerds on some level, not in the same area off course but being passionate/nerdy about something is what makes the world evolve, and let’s remember that it is the nerds of the past that made the world into what it is today.
Congratulations to Eric Kripke and the team behind “Timeless” for getting the opportunity to continue the story!
All TV-shows lead to Supernatural
I don’t know why but I think it’s funny to spot people who has been in Supernatural..
This is from Falling Skies, season 5.
All TV-shows lead to Supernatural
I recently started to watch “Falling Skies”, a TV-show about an alien invasion on earth and the humans fight to survive and take back their planet.
I started watching because Noah Wyle play the main character. He play a history professor who use his nerdy knowledge of past wars to defeat the present enemy.
But again I’m reminded of Supernatural..
Sometimes I have feelings for people who aren’t fictional characters, which is pretty nice
Its almost like everytime I start watching a new TV-show, I’m reminded of Supernatural..
Just finished reading my first Supernatural novel. It was set during season 7 somewhere between Bobbys death and the brothers not knowing what to do about Dick Roman.
I love some of the surreal conversations you bump into while in ‘The land of Supernatural’.. Sam: “[…] I have to say, I’ve been dead before, and […]” - Classic!
I love the episodes of Supernatural where S and D find out that their lives have been turned into novels, so reading novels about S and D seems perfect, somehow.. I can’t wait to read more!
Also am I the only one who would like the novels from the show? I think it would be so cool if Warner Brothers, the CW or who ever printed the manuscripts and disguised them as novels, like the books from the show! - and maybe made one for each episode.. I would definitely buy them!
I was watching Once Upon A Time a few weeks back and thought a house looked familiar..
One thing I really love about Supernatural now, after 12 seasons, is that we can see episodes like "Stuck in the middle (with you)" where if you watch it without having watched any of the previous episodes you wouldn't understand why Mary, Sam and Dean are reacting so shocked over a yellow eyed demon. It also wouldn't make any sense that the colt is a big surprising thing to be shown as dramatically as it was. In a show with less known backstory (fewer seasons) the writers have to tell the whole backstory but in Supernatural we get the raw version, which I think gives the director (the fabuless mr. Speight Jr.) an opportunity to tell the story in a more direct way and he gets a freedom to tell a story the way he likes. This western/Tarantino inspired episode could have been so much different, but this is in many ways a perfect new SPN! I think it would have been hard to tell the same story if you need to tell all the backstory too. And also, I think it is awesome to see a story where we don't need to be told any backstory because the backstory WAS the main story about 10 years ago! It is easy to see that a big fan and someone who knows the show was the director of this episode! Richard is an awesome person and has done his job really well! - This episode is already a favorite of mine! Thank you Richard Speight Jr.

So according to Sam, Dean is handsome and smart? According to Dean, Sam is smart and nice? And according to the Destiel'ers, Dean and Castiel is handsome, smart and nice? But according to all SPN-fans, I guess the word "gay" should be replaced with "SPN-cast"? - agree? #Supernatural
Tuesday afternoon I watched the #Supernatural episode presenting @robenedict as God. Wednesday evening (about 30 hours later) I'm standing next to the guy! Don't know why, but it feels unreal! #breaksfan #SPNFamily #missmyextendedfamily #latergram (at PRIVATCLUB Berlin)
2/2 My evening concisted of a great concert with the band @thestationbreaks! The guys were, as always, very sweet and fantastic! - it is really great they take time out of their schedule to tour in Europe in places that are tiny compared to the conventions they usually do.. The end. PS jeg er stadig ikke på toppen..! Thank you @jasonmannsmusic, @robenedict, @billy.moran, Tyler and drummer-Rob for at great concert and for being so kind! #breaksfan #berlin #greatguysdoexist #concert (at PRIVATCLUB Berlin)
TVLine’s Performer of the Week: HONORABLE MENTION | Jensen Ackles
It's not very often I cry when watching Supernatural but right at this moment I couldn't help myself!
After I woke up this morning I watched the last episode of “Once upon a time” season 5 (we are way behind in Denmark), then the latest episode of “Timeless” (happy to see Jim Beaver again).. And then I couldn’t figure out what to watch next, until I remembered that I haven’t watched the latest episode of “Supernatural” yet, How could I forget? - How ironic!
Once upon a time in Supernatural (S12E6).. Another time in Timeless (S1E4)
Jensen said at the SPNcon in Burbank last year, that Deans gun was lent out for a movie during the filming of season 9.. The picture is from “Our kind of traitor”, which var filmed during the same time as season 9. - Is this Deans gun? (It played an important role in the movie)
