not to be philosophical again but the one thing i’ve always hated most about kpop is that it moves so fast and most things are so superficial that they feel like they can be gone within a day and nobody will question why or what made them leave. even big iconic groups like 2ne1 losing members or splitting up just seems like an inevitability, like that common celebration of teamwork is all contradictory when kpop groups as a unit rarely work in the long run.
when i say that shinee is five, i mean that they’re the outlier. shinee has been able to achieve so much as a group both because they got lucky to be teamed together and because they’re all so incredibly honest, humble, goal-oriented, sympathetic, practical and optimistic. idc if it’s a manufactured thing. i couldn’t care less that shinee itself may just be a brand that ot5 is promoting, because the message it communicates is of overwhelming positivity. what i see is 5 people boosting each other’s careers, overcoming their differences, and strengthening each other with their unique talents. not to mention that when shinee are together, there is no avoiding how they all care deeply about each other. shinee is the definition of strength in numbers. i’ll always remember back to jonghyun saying that the ace and base designs looked similar because they were inherently tied to each other, like neither taemin nor him cared to separate their group work from their solo work. not to say that a group mentality is better than an individualistic one, but that that’s just how shinee works.
exclusivity aside, think of how many collaborative groups you know of who have lasted 10+ years of actively making/promoting new music? year after year these people lived together and worked together and toured together and yet they’re still as strong as they were at the highlight of their career. like, i’m not exaggerating when i say that their emotional fortitude is outstanding and the dedication they have to this group is incomparable. despite it all, even in moments like rn where their music should not have to be their focus, i’m not surprised to see every member mention that they hope shinee will be able to continue after this trauma.
