Julian Decker-2 December 2014-Made of Stone
An amazing performance by the show’s swing. He’s understudying, and has performed quite a bit more than understudies normally would have, at this stage in the show, due to the lead also filming a tv show.
whereisyourredscaaahf is mad at me for seeing Julian, so this is a small consolation.
For everyone who is disappointed in Michael Arden optioning down at the end of Made of Stone, here is the fantastic Julian Decker optioning up and rocking it.
It doesn’t make any sense why people are complaining about Michael “opting down” on the last note of this song because he didn’t “opt down.” In the Berlin production, Drew sang the “opt up” note in falsetto, but the American production featured a new orchestration for the end of this song, so it was no longer appropriate or effective for the vocalist to sing in falsetto. Hence, the note was changed to be more attainable because it would not have been realistic to hunt for someone who had the specific acting capabilities required for Quasimodo who could also comfortably belt a C5 night after night. The material was rewritten, so Michael didn’t “opt down.” He sang exactly what was written. He wouldn’t have been chosen by the creative team to lead the American premiere if he couldn’t perform the material the way they wanted it. Michael didn’t “opt down.” Julian opted up. I certainly agree, however, that Julian nailed this song!
I’m not too familiar with the German production, so to be simple I just say “opt up and opt down.” Both are a valid option that go with the music, and I prefer it belted and kept strong, I feel like when they went up into falsetto in the German versions I’ve heard it fizzles out, so whichever they need to do to stay strong and powerful is gonna be the best option. Both Michael and Julian kept the power going. There’s a lot of anger in the song, and in the German production it’s anger anger anger and then “were made of stone” is sung just sad and defeated, which is fine if it didn’t fizzle out. So, that’s kinda my opinion on the whole thing.
I’ve been asked a few times lately whether I optioned down or up at the end of Made of Stone. Here is your answer! This is from a sing through understudy rehearsal when we were at La Jolla Playhouse. Hope you enjoy!
Haha I asked him this just a couple hours ago!!
I honestly love people who base their entire opinion of a show without seeing the show. 👍🏼👍🏼
