I'm discovering all sorts of new dialogue events with them and I can't take it. I can't take these two. Help.
"Is that so? We clearly move in different circles."
Its alive…ITS ALIVE !
Holy shit. I’m. Speechless…
We do not even talk about how good is the Sigismund introduction in kcd2 - because it goes without saying and because every scene is so damn good and would deserve it's own analysis.
But still it is worth mentioning how from the very beginning Sigismund has this imposing threatening presence. There's setting sun behind him and at first we just see him as this dark figure before he comes into focus. And at that point he's the fear inducing almost mythical figure behind everything, he's the reason why Henry's life spiraled into the current chaos.
But then Henry assuming role of simple servant pours him wine and Sigismund turns to him and says he has nothing to fear. And we get to see he's too only human, not some unspeakable evil, and he too believes what he's doing is for greater good and takes no extra pleasure in cruelty inflicted by this war, he too is a human.
And later he even offers Henry a wine so he can later tell a story how he shared a drink with king himself.
And ina way he's the main villian of the game and he's still just a person and kcd2 is just so great at reminding you that all your enemies, no matter how important they are, are still human beings.
I literally had to stop and take a walk after this scene because it was just so damn cool
what if i consumed this movie as autistically as possible. anyway i found family’d them

Taash feels like a transphobic caricature of what a non-binary person is like
all the horrible stereotypes I don't want to be associated with condensed into a single character. I am terrified of meeting someone whose first exposure to the idea of being non-binary is Taash, I'd feel responsible for having to fix the damage, educating them and proving with my behaviour that we're not all like this
genuinely, if I was exposed to Taash as an egg, they would have pushed me further back into the closet. this is not what good representation is supposed to be.
I've seen a post of someone saying they're glad that you can't ignore the queerness of the game as it's front and centre. but I actually prefer it when the representation is just... not a big deal. not hidden, mind you, but simply casual. like it's the most mundane thing in the world. "okay, now let's move on" kind of thing. like they did with many queer characters in the previous DA games. bringing too much attention to it, in real life or fiction, makes me a little embarrassed and feel like I'm being pandered to, and in worst cases, reduced to my identity as if it's the only interesting and important thing about people like me.
and by the way. the very same people defending Taash would absolutely be calling them a creep if they were a cis man, with the way they "flirted" with Harding. am I supposed to accept an actual "transgender sex pest" depiction as good rep? this community deserves better. how starved are people for representation that they can defend this?
👆👆👆
And its baffling, because Trick Weekes themselves are non-binary?? And based a lot of Taash's story on their own experience? But it's still... REALLY bad? And a very damaging portrayal.
Trick Weekes also intentionaly wrote Taash to be autistic too, and I wonder if THAT is the root cause for thr flubbing in writing? Writing autistic characters in notoriously hard to pull off on purpose, but it's usually successful when it's UNintentional. Take Laios, from Dungeon Meshi:
Ryoko Kui didnot intend for Laios to be an autistic character, she just chose certain quirky behaviors that certain people with those persobality types she found fun/interesting and created a character around it, and explored their struggles to connect to people because of their unfortunate short comings. And nearly all of Laios' character traits are Autistic traits that many autistic people relate to. There's even a moment where Laios is have an argument with a 'friend' and it's a fightbecause Laios got so many social cues wronf, didn't understand the situation he accidentally put his friend in, and stepped on his friend's boundries so many times that they snapped. And there's been SO. MANY. POSTS/TWEETS of people who are autistic repoating that scene and going "This is a conversation I've had many times. This hits SO HARD for me personally." And that wasn't intentional on Ryoko Kui's part, at all. She wrote a character based either off of her own experiences in life, or mutuals that she cares for. (It's also why I'm glad she isn't denouncing the 'Laios is Autistic' claims, because he's such a good, healthy rep for the community, and I wonder if she sees it).
I could go on the topic, but my point is: usually good autistic representation is unintentional writing. And I think it's because there's a sterotype that autistic people are... 'off?' That they 'never respond correctly?' And/or 'don't behave like normal people?' Taash's dialogue is SO stilted, I hate hearing them talk, because it's rarely natural sounding, and it usually sounds like a robot/alien going through the motions. Plus, the weird jumps in conversation? The obtusely blunt/directness? Yes, autistic people tend to not beat around the bush, but they still understand that asking someone out of the blue "are you trying to have sex with me?" is WILD to just blurt out, where there was zero set up for the question to be asked. Like, YES, you can still have the blunt and directness, but autistic people have an understanding that there needs to be expectation for a direct question. And the wall scene... *shudders.* OP has it right that if Taash was a cis man, that scene would have bedn REALLY bad/predatory (it still is in a really bad way, the scene was so uncomfy, never bailed so fast on a romance in a game) Taash doesn't feel like a fleshed out character. Taash feels like a character that has a bunch of concepts and tropes the writer barely had an understanding of, and stuck it into a doll to puppet around.
Trick Weekes IS a good writer. Just look at SOLAS, who I could go on about, but is essentially also on the spectrum and nerodivergent, and Trick did fantastic with him. But Taash... even good writers have really bad writing sometimes. Just hate to see it in such a delicate topic.
For all the people claiming Taash is well written, beautiful or other and how it represents them...how does it feel to sell your dignity and identity so cheaply to money grabbing companies like EA?
It's like having autism and saying The Good Doctor makes you feel identified.
the “and now, i die.” line from rook during weisshaupt is one of the funniest lines in the game because it represent how much they are that guy (tm) that just showed up. they know how ridiculous it is that their trying to fight an elven vape cloud god and it’s neo pet. they just are like “well fuck it, we ball”

"It goes beyond dread. It can't be reasoned with or soothed over. It comes without warning, in the dead of night, in sunlit streets. A raw, strangling fear, struck somewhere deep past the heart." A study\redraw of "Death and the Maiden" by Marianne Stokes
the point of me doing all of that timeline nonsense is to talk about the letter from alexius to halward shortly after taking him in. there are two primary takeaways i have from this and they both make me crazy. first:
He's rather despondent over the life's path you've charted for him—if I may speak frankly—and thus, I think a part of him sabotages all efforts to keep him on the straight and narrow, either to spite you or to punish himself.
this sentence is. it’s a lot. in knowing dorian for such a short time, alexius understands him far better than his parents ever have. (“I know my son.” What my father knows of me would barely fill a thimble.”) dorian acts out because he’s miserable, he’s angry that he’ll never be what his parents want, angry at both them (for setting such unachievable expectations) and himself (for never being enough, for his inherent inability to be enough). alexius can see this so clearly. alexius genuinely cares for him. whether his parents at all care for the man he’s become or just for the man they wanted him to be is debatable.
and secondly, we have this sentence:
The boy had enough cheek, even in his inebriated state, to invite me to join him.
alexius tells halward that dorian propositioned him for sex. dorian is at this point, what, 17 or 18? this is likely the first evidence halward has that dorian likes men. alexius basically outs him. subtly, but it’s there. halward knew for a long time, or at least had a suspicion. but it was in private. only admitted in alexius’s correspondence.
in 9:37, when dorian is 26, he’s caught in bed with a lord’s son and essentially taken captive by his parents. he runs away a few months later, never to return.
below are two quotes from dorian during last resort of good men:
But what was the first thing you did when your precious heir refused to play pretend for the rest of his life? You tried to change me!
He was going to do a blood ritual. Alter my mind. Make me... acceptable. I found out. I left.
“the first thing you did.” this implies that halward only truly confronts dorian about his homosexuality and moves to act after the incident with lord abrexis’s son.
as dorian says in his sex scene:
Where I come from, anything between two men… it’s about pleasure. It’s accepted, but taken no further. You learn not to hope for more. You’d be foolish to.
maybe it would have been fine behind closed doors, but it’s been made extremely public. just look at this letter: word has spread quickly among halward’s enemies.
Halward: I only wanted what was best for you!
Dorian: You wanted the best for you! For your fucking legacy! Anything for that!
when dorian says this, he’s exactly right. halward might not understand dorian, but dorian understands him. halward knew dorian slept with men for 8, 9 years before this, thanks to alexius’s letter detailing how they met. it hasn’t been an issue before. but it’s only now that it could pose a threat to halward’s reputation that halward decides it has to change. he goes back on his word, his teachings against blood magic, to protect himself, his legacy, his image. it’s disgusting. appalling.
finally, i want to address this banter between cole and dorian:
Dorian: You think that if they love you, they should understand. They shouldn't want to hurt you.
Dorian: So you feel betrayed. You say things you can't ever take back.
Cole: “Get out. You are no son of mine.”
Dorian: Yes, like that.
Cole: He wishes he hadn't meant it.
world of thedas says dorian “escaped,” “fled.” even dorian says he “found out [and] left.” but this banter, given the above context, is elucidating. dorian didn’t sneak out in the middle of the night. he confronted halward. he stood his ground. he refused to let halward change him. he had hope, even if just a sliver of it, that halward would understand, would still love him, even if he wasn’t everything his father wanted.
and for staying true to who he was, he was given rejection. wholehearted rejection. halward said that dorian was not his son, and he meant it. if dorian couldn’t behave in a way that would uphold house pavus’s perfect legacy, if he couldn’t “put on a show, marry the girl, keep everything unsavory private and locked away,” then he couldn’t be a pavus.
dorian left having tried everything. having desperately pleaded with his father to still love him for who he was. but halward never truly loved dorian. he only loved the man he hoped dorian would become, the man he tried to force him to become by throwing money and disciplinary action and strict schools at the problem because he never truly cared about what dorian wanted, the man he was entirely willing to abandon his abandon his principles to use blood magic to change dorian into.
dorian was not halward’s son, because he fought against the life he was forced into since birth. dorian was not halward’s son, because he dared to put dorian before pavus.
