“That makes sense. I heard about what happened to Lance. That’s rough, I can only imagine what John and Marisol are going through. I’m glad to hear that. Yeah, I’m good. Ashlee’s been taking some time off and is visiting her parents in Wisconsin. We talked on the phone earlier, she said she’ll try to squeeze in a few days to come down here, but that’s still in the open for now. She told me to tell you guys she misses you though. How are you and Dad?”

“ Oh, it’s so awful, isn’t it? Terrible stuff, we couldn’t believe it when we heard about it. I was at the hospital with Marisol when his condition was still so critical, and I looked at her, and all I could think was ‘I’m so glad you boys have never put us through something like that.’ Put us through other stuff, for sure, but nothing like that. Is that selfish to say? Well.. But it reminds me that I should give her a call soon. Been too long from my side.. Aw, that’s sweet. I hope you gave her our love. I can’t believe I haven’t seen her since Christmas last year. We’re fine. Well. Getting there. ”

“Hey. Course I’ll have you. I just finished up reading this paper, so now I’m free. Dad’s out a lot these days, isn’t he? I’m not used to him being this busy on a weekend. I definitely wouldn’t say no to some Chinese. How’re you doing, mom? Everything alright?”

“ He’s busy, yeah. You know. Ever since John has been taking some more time to be home, your dad’s just had to work a lot more. Seems like that doesn’t stop at weekends. I think I’m feeling Chinese, too. Have a look online what you want, I’ll call in a bit. Yeah, absolutely. With you? Busy day? How’s Ashlee, has she decided whether she’ll come down to visit for a bit? ”

sunday, 7:29 pm, the sullivan’s guest room

“ Hey. So. Your dad’s out having an important dinner with important people talking about important things.. both your brothers are out seeing friends. Since you’re not doing either of those things, looks like you’ll be stuck with just me. If you’ll have me that is. Are you hungry? We could.. order a pizza. Or Chinese. I think there’s still casserole from the other day in the fridge which we could warm up if you’re feeling that more. ”

“Thank you, babes. I know to appreciate it. You listening is enough. The same goes for you. Always welcome at ours. How are the things at home for you? Did the situation cool down a little?”

“ Let me just say.. it is his responsibility to seek out help for himself. It.. may not be his fault, but you can’t make him do something. However I think it’s great that you’ve taken the first step into getting help for yourself. I think that’s important. [..] Hey. It’ll be okay. Yeah? We’ll support you however we can. And.. well. It’s still a bit icy here too, I won’t lie to you. It’s gotten a little better since the kids have been home but I think that’s pretend.. He still won’t sleep in the same bed as me. I can’t make him listen to me. I know how Tom gets, there’s no point pushing when he’s angry. He’ll come around.. Eventually. He just needs time. ”

“Every time I bring it up, he shuts down. Or gets angry. Either of those. I feel terribly selfish.”

“ Selfish? Oh, honey, no. No, no, no. You are not selfish. You are probably the least selfish person I know. You do everything for everyone. Of course he needs therapy, I’m so sorry that he won’t see that.. but you’re not selfish. I’m also sorry that.. I can’t offer you any good advice. But I’m here for whenever you need me. Or a break. ”

“He won’t even look at me anymore, Jill. He’s not. He’s not the same.”

“ [..] As.. probably none of us would be.. He’s still refusing therapy? ”

“That’s.. very strange. Did something happen between Miles and her son that you didn’t know about? Don’t think too much about it, I’m sure it’s nothing personal. Do you want the honest answer or the one I’m telling everyone else?”

“ Here, I’ll refill your wine.. and then I want the complete and honest answer. Obviously. ”

wednesday, 7:29 pm, the sullivan’s porch

“ I’m telling you, Clari! She looked straight at me in the middle of Trader Joe’s, turned on her heel and pretended not to hear me when I said hello. Miles and her son were in elementary together, we used to go to all his birthday parties.. Well, I don’t know, I’m just saying something’s up.. [..] Speaking of.. How are things at home? ”

What was the day your first son was born like? Do you remember it in detail?

“ Oh goodness, I don’t even want to think about how long ago that was.. am I that old? But even though it’s something like a millenium ago, I do remember it clearly. Was, y’know.. a little scared, especially when it seemed like Roman wanted to come into the world while we were in the car. But Tom.. Tom was there the whole way through. Kept it together for me, let me say mean things to him.. And then Roman was with us pretty quickly, something I’m still grateful for – someone else took his time a bit more. I’ll always remember that moment. Tom held him first and his face.. I’d never seen him make that face before. I don’t think I have since, I think it must’ve been reserved for that moment only. My two beautiful boys. He came over and placed him on my chest. One of the most overwhelming moments of my life. ”

Got plans for after college? What do they look like?

“ I’ll take what life throws at me. ”

What are your feelings towards Tom Sullivan?

“ Tom’s.. He’s a great guy. Very good to watch scary movies with. And I bet you wouldn’t have guessed, but.. he does an amazing Rambo impression. ”

Who is the most important person in your life?

“ Am I allowed to say George Michael? I Want Your Sex is very dear to me. Love a man who’s banned from the radio for his lyricism. ”

“Very kind of you. You sure you don’t want me to come along?”

“ Chin up. I’ll see you around, tiger. ”

“I could think of worse things than that. Maybe one day you will, who knows. My mother would love you.”

“ It’s not that I’m surprised about the fact, more about you dropping the facade so soon. Now I’m already meeting the family. Careful, next thing you know I’m your girlfriend. ”

“I’m thinking it’s inevitable, yes. Why, looking forward? He’s a bit too young for you, I’m afraid.”

“ That so, Thomas? Can’t go a weekend without seeing my face? ”
