What are some Jimmy Carter facts??

-the guy is truly underrated

-i’m p sure most people know about his family’s peanut farm so i’ll skip that one

-first president born in a hospital

-called for an end to segregation when he was governor of Georgia

-created the Department of Energy

-human rights were a HUGE cornerstone of his foreign policy

-tried v hard to settle the Iranian hostage crisis

-diplomatic and economic moves weren’t getting them anywhere, so he sent in a military rescue mission, but a huge sandstorm on the day of the mission forced it to be aborted

-people criticize him for being weak/ineffectual but the dude worked his ass off to resolve the situation without getting any hostages killed !

-his inability to solve the crisis is likely what led to him not getting elected for a second term

-hostages were released hours after Ronald Reagan’s inaugural address

-ronald i hate u with a burning passion

-in 2000, Carter severed his relationship with the Southern Baptist Convention bc of its opposition to letting women be pastors & the fact that it was generally shitty in terms of women’s rights

-won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize

-supports same-sex marriage and has said he believes Jesus would support it, too

-the Carter Center has nearly eradicated Guinea worm from Africa — it’s set to be the second disease after smallpox to be completely eradicated! (throwback to a few months ago in medical microbiology when we had to watch a clip of a doctor working for the carter center extracting a guinea worm from a man’s foot; I will never forget that, rip)
