Series of 8 “Encore” Australian recordings releases for @australianstringquartet (part 1). I normally work in a different style for the portraits I do for ASQ but they requested a more graphic, linear approach for this series, which was initially a challenge to develop but quite rewarding as well, once I nutted it out. Learning for Justice illustration for Southern Poverty Law Center magazine. The feature was about how community organising can help students in general, but in particular, immigrant students. The article talked about various had successfully implemented this approach and the client wished to reference the architecture particular to one of these communities, that of Mott Haven. Initially the commission was for an opening full page spread and 2 spot illustrations but due to time restraints the job was trimmed to just the opener. Cover and inside spread for US Postal Service magazine, the Eagle. The feature was about changes that would improve and simplify operations and delivery routes. Also the development of new distribution and sorting warehouses which would be more modern, spacious, lighter and better ergonomically designed for workers. None of the warehouses had been built yet so I had to come up with a generic looking space.The brief actually mentioned the idea that these spaces would in a sense bring more light and the sun into the space. Ride the Breath of the Ocean, digital and found textures. So, I’m still on this Gestalt, Rorschach ride carrying on from the water stain piece(Gestalt’s Kiss) from a couple of posts ago. A few months ago a friend @hayleymischieflordart posted a beautiful pic on facebook of some objects that she had found on the beach and arranged and photographed. It looked looked wonderful but there was one particular piece that really captured my interest. A piece of driftwood with some lichen or moss on it that looked to me not just like a face in profile, but also like an old Cameo brooch. I decided to do my version of this Cameo but as is often the case as I was working on it, what was ok in my mind’s eye, wasn’t working as a piece. I decided to change tack and take the line for a walk, as it were, and see where I end up, with no real plan or working sketches. I would just react intuitively to what I was seeing develop and move from there. It’s not a way I normally work and it was both challenging, inspiring and exciting. “2nd Class Children” - I started this piece a while back and it’s still not quite finished but with the recent tragic events in Texas, events that seem to happen with a saddening regularity, I just had to post it as it is exactly what the piece is about. The travesty of the situation in the US is that the fervent blinkered pursuit of an ideal of freedom, of a right, is due to a misunderstanding of an amendment in the constitution which comes at the expense of children who are literally executed in their class rooms to protect it! Athena, Prudence and Wisdom - Just spruced up an old piece and since it’s Greek Easter this weekend I thought the Hellenic vibe suited. In Greece, the owl is a symbol of wisdom and prudence. According to Greek mythology, when goddess Athena, the goddess of wisdom, saw the creature for the first time, she was impressed by her big eyes and her solemn appearance, swiftly becoming her favorite bird and later an emblem of her. The wise owl is said to have protected and inhabited the Acropolis in large numbers. But as goddess Athena was also the goddess of war, the owl became the protector who accompanied the Greek army to the war. If an owl was flying over the Greek soldiers before a battle, it was a sign of victory. Just collaborated with DMQ Review online literary magazine for their Spring(US) poetry edition, matching my illustrations to a selection of poets and their poems in the Spring Edition. It was a great experience to see my work coupled with literary works and also for the fact they selected a varied compilation that included some pieces from years ago that haven’t seen the light of day for for quite some time and were done when I was still using pastels.
