Learning ASL Resources
after a conversation with a friend, I thought this might be helpful to some people wanting to learn ASL. I’m nowhere near an expert, I’ve only just started learning but this is just a list of some resources I’ve found useful. (I want to be clear, I am not HOH/Deaf and I don’t know anyone who speaks ASL. This is just a collection I’ve found by trial and error or google. If there’s anything you’d like me to add or make note of, please let me know!)
Websites/Videos
LifePrint: I’m sure if you’ve even just googled ASL Lessons you’ve heard of Dr. Bill Vicar’s site. He has a youtube that follows along with the stuff on his site and he has an amazing amount of resources and helpful tips (theres a link to a freaking great fingerspelling quiz site). He’s hands down my favorite.
Learn ASL in 31 Days: I like these videos because she clearly shows you each sign from different angles. Also, she’s very adorable/nice. MAKE SURE YOUVE GOT CAPTIONS ON YO!
Start Learning: This one has a free option and a paid option, I mean. I don’t like it as much as I do LifePrint but it is similarly structured and has a lot of resources like workbooks and videos. I also like that they have videos on Deaf culture as well.
ExpertVillage: This is a nice collection of videos with everything separated by subjects. Of course, she doesn’t get too far into it with grammar etc but for a little more concise lesson, this playlist has about 11 videos.
SmartHands: This one is directed for kids but let’s be real, if you are just learning, these basic videos with the fun animations would be plenty helpful. Also they have like over 300 videos with songs and vocab etc. It’s pretty intense.
Gallaudet Resource List: They have a pretty descriptive list of resources ranging from sites, books, and courses.
List of Free ASL Courses: I figured I should put this here in case someone wants to get certified in ASL or prefer a classroom setting. The article also has a helpful list of ASL dictionaries as well.
Impact Lesson: This video was a really random find for me. It’s good for a short collection of vocab (only seven minutes worth) but there’s literally only one video. I figured I’d go ahead and put it here because I like how she clearly annunciates the words. She does get a little fast but you can always pause and replay etc.
Apps
So here’s a collection of apps that I’ve found helpful to practice when I have free time in the car or at work etc. To be clear, I haven’t used any of the iPhone or Windows apps, these are just based of reviews etc. The android ones are the apps I’ve actually used… because I have an android.
The ASL App: I wish I could use this app. It looks amazing and totally intense. [iPhone]
Marlee Signs: THIS ONE HAS VIDEOS!!! [iPhone]
ASL Coach: This one seems like a fun, quiz based app and it seems to have great reviews. You get shown a sign by a little digital hand, and you have to pick from a multiple choice system what sign it’s representing. [iPhone]
ASL: I personally couldn’t handle the interface of this app but, to be honest, there aren’t a lot of options for Android. It does have a good amount of vocab categories and signs. [Google Play/Android]
ASL Dictionary: This app is not free but it does have videos so that is definitely a plus!! [Google Play/Android & Windows]
ASL Kids: This one has a random assortment of vocab but it’s got cute kids signing. [Google Play/Android]
Finger Spelling: I use this one a lot to hone down my alphabet skills. It’s pretty easy to use and simple. It’s a quiz set up and kinda tries to trick you into getting things wrong so it really solidifies your understanding/memory of the alphabet. [Google Play/Android]
JUST AN FYI Let’s be real, I used to have a Windows phone. We all know the app options are abysmal but I tried.
Learning Verbatim: This looks like it might have videos? I don’t know, my dudes. Joy thinks it’s a piece of shit but Mike is amazed that education is free? [Windows]
Finger Spell Trainer: This seems to have the best reviews. It looks like a simple, picture quiz for the alphabet. [Windows]
Books
I wanna start by saying that I have barely delved into the world of ASL books. I prefer videos because it helps me see the sign at all angles but for people with bad internet or prefer something they can hold, here we go!
Bill Vicar has a book review list and I really like that it concentrates on Deaf culture and history.
Start Learning also has a book rec list. They really helpfully give you a few sentences about every single book.
The Everything Sign Language: It seems like almost a textbook (but not at the price of a text book, thank god) and it covers both Deaf culture and ASL lessons, as it should be really.
Learn ASL (Beginners Guide): I’ve had my eye on this one. It a nice big ol’ guide with a crap ton of signs. It has step by step images and the lady has nice, curly hair… because that’s important? (Also, I’m under the impression you can print it yourself?)

'Right back at it again...'
So tumblr, It's been a while! I've missed you. But that's not the only reason I'm back, I need a place to write, vent, track, fangirl and so on... So today was a fun day spend with my lovely friend Jay on her birthday! We bought lots of makeup and had brunch, then we got pretty and went to Cheesecake Factory, that was around 8pm? It's now 4am and I have felt sick and like shit since we were about half way home from there. My body is unhappy. I really need to get my shit together, 5 months 'til my birthday and 7 months until I start my school program for my future career! Goals: • Stop treating your body like a crap disposal! • Exercise! Move! Walk! Swim! Lift! Anything! • Lose 8 to 10 lbs per month! If you can do that you'll ALMOST be at your goal weight before you start school! • Eat more vegetarian/pescataria - limit meat intake. Cut back on dairy use almond milk instead of cows milk. Tomorrow, thank Jesus is a new day and I hope I will feel better, I hope I can get some rest. I will be starting my day (at whatever time I finally wake up) with oatmeal or a protein shake and I pray to all things science that my tummy will stop this.
Today sucked. I walked into work late, walked into the pharmacy and it was like a goddamn bomb went off shit everywhere, our new DM, controlled substance after controlled substance all day. My coworker and I did EVERYTHING we could to stay caught up and we still got complaints because the lady had to wait a few minutes so we could finish her rx properly. Sorry we were being thorough so you got the right drugs, bitch. By the end of the day, I gave up. Work discourages my personal life, it literally drains the life out of me. Ugh.

Set 1: 40 jumping jacks 30 crunches 15 push-ups 20 squats
Set 2: 50 jumping jacks 25 crunches 20 push-ups 30 squats

There ya go! Remember this isn’t exactly 1,000 calories but it’s pretty close. Make sure you drink lots of water and stop if you need to cause this one’s a real butt kicker!
