Week3 Digital Ethnography
I research a contemporary illustrator is James Jean. I knew this illustrator is from a poster of The Shape of Water.
When he was in school, he spent a lot of time on sketching in public places. I saw one of his sketchbook he showed in a video which is really delicate and beautiful. At first, he knew nothing about art but he fell in love with painting in foundation year. Now he is a great comic cover artist. His job is constant need to work in obsession with working with getting his ideas and imagination. He works in various materials such as stained glass and metal etching plates but the basis of all his work is drawing. He has a big studio which hangs many canvas boards. He is a fine artist but also creates illustrations as support for doing fine art.
(Asteroid, 2014, Rella)
6'UNDERSTOOD IN ITS TOTALITY, the spectacle is both the outcome and the goal of the dominant mode of production. It is not something added to the real world - not a decorative element, so to speak. On the contrary, it is the very heart of society's real unreality. In all its specific manifestations - news or propaganda, advertising or the actual consumption of entertainment- the spectacle epitomizes the prevailing model of social life.’ (Phase 6)
I choose this illustration is because our life is surrounded with a fictitious world which has various advertising, news or something else like the girl in the illustration. Many of them are lean on different kinds of screens such as phone, tv or big screens on buildings, this means in the society of the spectacle specific manifestations become more and more common in our life. They are fictitious but play a significant role in our world.
4003 portfolio2
Today is the portfolio criteria. From the crit, I improved many in my portfolio.
I think the big problems for my portfolio is the unitive type forms. I also need to make some of artworks more detail.
For example, for this paper cutting artworks. I put some small details under it to show it’s shadows, shapes and levels. I think this page still can be improve. I think I can change the detail pictures to some different shape like circle.
I remove some drafts because they are blurry and messy. I change them to my visual diary because I prefer to show outcomes. Also, pencil drafts are difficult to scan them clear but the colourful outcome is more attractive. I think portfolio need to catch people’s eyes.
Visual diary.
4003 portfolio1
I think portfolio is a good way to promote and present myself and summarize my artworks. It’s a visual showcase to record my development and improvement.
I need to make a 20 page digital PDF in Adobe InDesign with template.
I chose one picture in my gif as the cover. I think it’s adorable.
I need to consider the composition for each page to make them clear and clean in numerous ways, also make them unique. This is a bit difficult for me, I always think I made too much ordinary compositions.
I was satisfied with my portfolio. Because of it, I found that i created so many amazing beautiful artworks.
Comics and Visual Narrative
Today’s course was quite interesting because I like comics. but compare to comics, I prefer animations because I can see the whole story clearly from sounds and moving pictures. I think comics quite depends on the artist’s drawing skills.
This comic is quite simple but it’s quite interesting. I think for the simple pictures, colours play an important role to make the picture attractive.
Comics also are about graphic design such as the layout of each picture and the texts.
XiaDa, Star of Mitelan2, 2009
For example, different shape of bubbles could make different moods. This also connects to people’s experience of shapes such as sharp shape is related to scream.
Comics have a long history, in my opinion, most of the old comics were delicate and many of them are black and white, however, modern comics include more interesting story and various drawing skills.
Exhibition
Today was the exhibition for the Everyday Connections. I saw various interesting groups of photos in different places. I did some sketches of some sequences I like.
I like the way he took the photos especially the middle one. I can see the strong lines with nice colours which makes a visual impact.
This one shows a fluent continuity. The colours are nice with strings. My favourite one is the middle one, I like the colours make a contrast and the string is light.
This sequence is magic because of the colours and lines. The photos on two sides are blurry which make the vision focus on the middle.
Here are some sketches I did.
Study Trip to the V&A: Interaction Design
Today I am going to visit an exhibition about game. I saw many interesting process of some games such as story boards and drafts.
I can see the drawings are quite delicate that is what I want to show for my artwork. I took some photos of the drawings and want to learn skills from them.
Unfortunately , I haven’t fund things about Overwatch. But I still felt amazing by a live performance of music for a game: Bloodborne. I quite enjoy listening the music and I did it twice. I think it is one of a point to make the game amazing. Music is quite important to a game, it affects the feeling of playing especially to the action game such as Bloodborne, Overwatch...
If I want to make animation, I should pay attention to the sound and I should make them best for my animation. However, it is difficult to make delicate original sounds especially the background sounds. This can be a big challenge.
Friday workshop 25.1
I studied some methods to deal with photos. In today's course, I learnt Editorial. It's a method about publication, magazines, and newspaper.
I tried finding some common points among my photos and grouped them together.
white, quantity
lines, pattern
Quantity
I also used these sequences to make a story.
This one is like sky connect to the river which has swans and the river extend to the wardrobe.
This one we find some common colours and shapes and combined them together.
This one is my favorite. I like the idea and composition. We remade a cat and make it narrative.
Everyday Connections – Reference
Continuity
It’s a way to edit pictures in a continuous way. I put these photos together because of the shadow and light and the lines.
Chronology
It’s a way to put photos chronologically which is like the phone’s album.
Typology
It’s a way to put photos by their types.

Information design: Scientific illustration, industrial animation and visual literacy.
A scientific or technical image is a multidisciplinary tool to provide examples for science or technology, it is an accurate, clear and objective way to approach science.
I think the most important thing for scientific illustration is to communicate knowledge for the education.
Cirrocumulus, cloud study, c 1803-1811, by Luke Howard
This illustration explains the classification of cloud-forms and become a great source to understand Howard’s work. In addition, scientific illustration is also common in school such as biology textbook. It gives student a clear way to understand complex definitions.
Scientific illustration was appeared in several years ago such as Renaissance. it can be a way to know how people thought and live in that time.
Sensory Design, illustration, animation and touch
Today’s lecture was talked about five senses of the illustration. The five senses make the picture more interesting and vivid. It is a normal way to create an illustration. Also, five senses are used in animation.
This makes me think of a quite interesting stop motioned film called Ping. Its animation is made of clay. You can see the clear texture of the clay and even can image the touch.
Pingu,1986
For the taste, the animation also shows various food. But the most delicious one I think is the fish. The animation also has many awesome sounds. From the picture below we can hear the sound of blowing bubbles.
Pingu,1986
Like most children, meat is more welcoming than vegetables.
Pingu,1986
From the expression, I can feel that vegetable soup is not quite tasty.
Overall, I can see how five senses help an animation become attractive and they inspire me to create my work.

Portrait of a young woman 1935
by Meredith Frampton
This was my second time been to Tate Modern museum. For each time, I visited In The studio first and I always paid attention to a oil painting artwork called portrait of a young woman. I have to say it is a really nice painting full of charms. The artist used numerous quite delicate brush strokes on this painting and this makes the picture quite true like a photo.
The colours are also matched peacefully which let me think of a leisurely life. In the picture, I believe the red flower is the best element because it makes the colour not too much boring but compare to the woman in the middle the flower also doesn’t effect the woman become outstanding.
For the composition, I have to say this layout of person and objects is easy to become messy, however the artist didn’t.
Picture without too much colour but not boring composition is hard to layout will but not messy. Probably it’s the magic of this oil painting.
I think painting before 18 century is used to show or record the events like photo however people started add their own idea into their painting since 18 century to make the painting more close to art unlike photo.
4003 Storytelling
Today we made a group to create out own spell like the film Harry Potter. The activity was quite amusing. There is various spells we can choose to create such as bring someone lucky or a spell for a avenger....
Fortunately, all of us want to be an avenger. We create a dangerous spell to attack someone for avenger. The way to use it is that using hair of someone as a media and speak the spell. Then the person will die in fire.
I quite like this spell because it’s powerful. It inspire me that I could image a young beautiful but very dark witch stand in a dark room, on a red magic circle. She waves her huge wander and speaks the spell. There is a poor person running confusedly in a hopeless forest and wants to escape, however, a group of fire appear suddenly round he.
This cover called Paris-Almanach. The time in the picture is 19th century which was a positive year for artists who in France. An elegant lady wore in gorgeous clothing and held a zine which had the same name as the cover in front of the crowd. She looked like watching something or waiting for someone. I could feel that the year recored in this alamanach might be peaceful due to the expresson on the lady's face.
IA4003 Storytelling
The homework I wrote.
The course about story was interesting. I like the tutor who were using a dramatic voice to talk to us like reading a magic story. on the course we tried writing story with a keyword or something else. it was very creative and interesting because I enjoy writing stories and make drawing for my story. I thing words can inspire and show my ideas.
IA4003 Materialism 17.10
Today we were working on taking video of exposure in printing room and darkroom for our presentation. I believe that this is quite helpful to me because it helps me review the process of screen printing and know a new knowledge from the processes which is exposure in screen printing.
Exposure in screen printing is that using water to wash the shapes and making it clear.
Unfortunately, I had a course next so I didn't see how exposure works in the darkroom. However, I think I got much useful information about the verb: expose. Actually, from the whole project, we continued exploring knowledge of our verb and I know one of the meanings of exposing is that share/tell the knowledge to someone. So I think expose is working through the project because the tutor told us the knowledge and we shared them in our presentation.
