An ambulance that speeds, lights flashing and sirens blaring in one direction, but slows and takes its time coming back in silence, is a sad sight to see.
Whatās your favorite novel that you can finish in a day?
I have to read 9 more books in December to hit my goal for the year.
The Death of Subtlety
I love short fiction. Itās thought-provoking and fast, thatās what I love about it.
So when I picked George Saundersā A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, I thought I was gonna be hooked. Itās his study and breakdown of a few of the best pieces of short fiction ever written by some of the best Russian writers whoāve ever loved.
Yet, I was so bored!
For each story, I couldnāt help but think āGet to the fucking point!ā
They are a product of their own time and the writer's environment. The messages of the short stories are subtle in their liberal and social meanings because being too loud could result in some dangerous repercussions.
The messages of these stories arenāt drawn out plainly. Theyāre woven into the story with precision and grace, and only when youāve read the whole story and studied it as George Saunders did can you fully grasp the meaning.
Theyāre very good stories, I know that, but I was so bored.
I realized that itās not the fault of the writers, itās my fault.
I have subjected myself to the same mindless content daily that keeps so many people from enjoying subtly in art. Iām used to those quick-paced TikTok stories that hit you over the head with punch lines and loud opinions.
Thereās no nuance in the media we consume daily.
But what is the alternative? How do we get nuance back into the mix?
We canāt simply convince an entire generation to stop using TikTok and pick up a 500-page book that theyāll only feel satisfied reading at the very end.
It takes work to enjoy a good work of fiction. Tonight Iāll fall asleep after watching a few mindless TikToks, but tomorrow Iāll pick up that book and try again.
The release date for Bong Joon Ho's *Mickey 17* has been postponed from January 31, 2025, to April 18, 2025.
Oh no thatās okay. Itās just become one of my favorite books I read this year but thatās fine Iāll just go fuck myself and wait longer
Itās okay really
MICKEY7 - Edward Ashton
4/5
Just so fun!
Death is a fascinating subject to touch upon in the present. Adding the science fiction genre only makes it more interesting.
If you replace a single plank on a ship every day, when does it stop being the same ship?
What if you toss that ship down a blender voluntarily?
Ashton captures a bit of deep philosophy while also keeping a humorous tone throughout the whole story. Itās a very good balance that will keep you reading.
Looking forward to seeing Robert Pattinson bring Mickey to life and die an extra 10 times for our amusement.
If The Batman 2 opens with a scene of just Batman absolutely demolishing the Penguin I will buy a ticket every single day for the first two weeks itās out just to see the Penguin get his ass BEAT
Pros of re-reading your own fic
a good time;
Has exactly the tropes you like and the characterization you want to read;
Gratification: yes you did finish a thing and yes you did do good;
just a very fun time all around.
Cons of re-reading your own fic:
Is that another TYpO
I think with the state of America as it is right now. We need more books written by queer, feminist, and authors of color. Write more stories that question authority and societyās faults!
Those are the demographics targeted by the book bans in Project 2025.
If we can write them quicker than they can ban them, theyāll never silence us.
The Penguin- Possibly the best show Iāve seen this year!
The Batman is the perfect detective film, in my opinion. Brilliance from start to finish.
Now I was a bit skeptical for the Penguin. Itās DCās habit to knock something out of the park then strike out the very next at bat. Weāve seen it time and time again.
However, the Penguin is perhaps the best follow up to the Batman that we couldāve gotten. If the Batman is the perfect detective film, the Penguin is the perfect mafia show. So good that I would argue itās the best mafia show since the sopranos, I might lose this argument because of the many mafia shows out there but I could still argue.
The Penguin is filled with humor, heart, and horror. It is chilling from start to finish and Iām going to end this review here and go watch the finale again!
BURY YOUR GAYS- Chuck Tingle
Book Review 4.25/5
I love queer horror. Maybe I have a bias as a bi man who grew up in a heavily religious and unforgiving town, but I cannot put down a well-written queer horror story.
Chuck Tingle is a queer icon, who I have followed for a little bit being first introduced to his romance novels. The main message of his work is, Love is Real. A message we all need right now.
Bury Your Gays tackles the struggles of queer artists in a film industry that is starting to turn away from the craft and relying on AI production. Though this would have seemed like pure fiction years ago, it is reality now.
All artists are under pressure because of the amount of work being stripped away from them as companies and media turn to AI for free or cheap art as a way to cut corners. Art is under attack, the artist is under attack. While there will always be a place for artists and no computer can ever truly replace good art, no one can deny that corporate America would rather generate a logo for free than pay someone to hand craft one.
The struggle against AI is only one side of Bury Your Gays.
The book also delves into the issues that many queer artist face with the perception of their work. Often queer art is either too gay or not the right kind of gay and forced to conform to make it more palatable for the average consumer.
Chuck Tingles work of romance challenges pre-established norms for the queer genre. Just take a look at his work, I promise you will be glad you did. The titles are catching and hilarious, but under that Tingle as an artist is practically screaming onto the page āI will write exactly as I want to write.ā His work is original and unflinching, sacrificing none of his artistic integrity and heart.
Bury Your Gays sees a queer writer in the film industry as he is told to kill off or āburyā his gays. With all the horrors that are after him, the thing that perhaps scares him the most is giving in to the pressure and sacrificing his art. He doesnāt want to give into the gay tragedy trope just because it will sell or because his original gay and proud storyline wouldnāt sell.
This may hit close to home for a lot of people right now.
In the world as we are right now, with a homophobic president about to take office, it feels a bit scary to be a queer artist. Who knows how cruel these bigots will become? It may feel safer to bury our gays in our art and our writing, to hide it from the world because weāre afraid the world will lash out as us.
But we cannot give in. We spent so long forced into fitting the publicās narrative to make it more palatable for them. We have all been forced At one point or another to hide part of ourselves.
The lesson of the book, at least the lesson I took away, is to accept yourself fully and sacrifice no part of yourself because of fear. Only then can you feel empowered to make the art that reflects who you are. Do not bury your gays, embrace them.
As Chuck Tingle displays plainly on his face: LOVE IS REAL
Does it get difficult being so wonderful and sweet and lovable? š¤ The people must know
Yes, itās a heavy burden š«”
I turned to BookTok to bring myself some comfort these past few days.
I see so many BookTokers saying ākeep politics off of BookTokā or ābooks arenāt political.ā
You dumbasses!
BOOKS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AND WILL ALWAYS BE POLITICAL
When you read Hunger Games did you cheer for Snow? Because you voted for Snow.
Iām finding it hard to write this November.
With so much hate in the world, and a hate filled monster as our president, itās hard to try and write about a world that scares me more than this.
I write mostly horror, but weāre living in a world filled with more horror than Iāve ever dreamed of.
What can my writing do that would benefit anyone in this time of pain and suffering? If my words reach even a single person and make them feel safe I think that would be enough, but Iām so bogged down I canāt think of a single word to write.
I hope there are scores of artists out there right now, using their grief to make something that will shed some beauty onto this bleak world.
Today, that is not me.
Disappointed But Not Surprised
I am disappointed, but not surprised
I have gotten used to being let down
as we are all getting far too used to.
I am disappointed, but not surprised
that I have been lied to and told
to be thankful for the lies.
I am disappointed, but not surprised
that our country worships the rich more
than they want to help the poor.
I am disappointed, but not surprised
that fear has laid waste to us
and stomped out home like a flame.
I am disappointed, but not surprised
that white men once again control
womenās rights, history repeats itself.
I am disappointed, but not surprised
that people would rather push hate
than accept same sex love.
the curve
somehow ive found myself in a position where folks come to chuck in times of strife for encouragement. lets get the big part of this conversation out of the way LOVE IS STILL REAL and that is the thing to remember. that north star remains. today there is more to talk about though
existence pushes towards love community and freedom, because CREATION is what we were built to do and creation thrives with these things as fuel. IT GETS BETTER. LOVE IS REAL. however this change comes in up and down waves. its not a straight line and should not be expected to be
some of these waves are short and small, and some of the slopes are years or decades long. there is no mincing words here, we are entering a massive downward wave. the implications are huge and it is okay to mourn that. FEEL THOSE FEELINGS. it is an important part of the ride
the most telling sign post on our slope is this: tromp won the popular vote (or likely will when the votes are done). we can talk POLITICAL STRATEGY all day about electoral college or who should court the center or the left and on and on but ultimately THIS is the real story
to me it signals a TRUE cultural shift. likely conservatives will have presidency, senate, house, and supreme court. WHAT A GIANT SLOPE. HOLD THE HECK ON because we will be riding it for a while, deep into the pit of the void. hold your buds tight, prove love at the local level
but heres the thing, MASSIVE waves have happened before. theyll happen again. mind numbing slopes into the abyss and great soaring leaps into the sky. in fact the inertia almost ALWAYS causes them to happen right after each other. hippies or punks back in the day, buckaroos now
politically we were trapped in a basically fifty fifty trot for a long time, but it was not always like this (just look at old election maps what the heck). to be honest, tromps map looks like one of those old maps right now. and DANG did COUNTER MOVEMENTS blooms from those times
in other words, THERE WILL BE A COUNTER CULTURE MOVEMENT THAT WE HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE IN OUR LIFETIMES. you are now a rebel for the resistance and the wave that will swing back towards love will awe us in ways we cannot even imagine yet.
but for now, feel those feelings, mourn, prove love, stay safe. do not let the hope i am espousing feel like a distraction from the very real, even deadly consequences of the terrible pit we are plummeting into. it is a horrible day, and FUTURE HOPE does not diminish that, BUT
get ready because that counter culture wave is coming and YOU are a part of it. if you want to shout HECK OFF DEVILS then shout it LOUD, if you want to cry then cry HARD, if you want to love then love with your WHOLE HEART. thats the start of the movement that we dont know yet
when that movement takes shape we will feel the inertia of the curve and it may make us sick from the rollercoaster turn, and that pressure will be uncomfortable and scary, but THEN buckaroo, we will soar, and ill be so dang glad to be holding on tight with you when we do
THE WILD ROBOT-movie review
4.75/5
Not since Brother Bear have I felt magic and heart like this in a childrenās movie.
I went in alone on a whim after work. I read the book and liked it a lot, so I thought Iād give the movie a shot even though I didnāt really believe the claim that it was āthe Best Dreamwork Movie Ever.ā
But it turns out that I underestimated the movie just like I underestimated the book.
Damn near cried from start to finish it was that beautiful.
It had a strong message about motherhood and family, but I would argue that its strongest message was that of the adoptive family. Iāve always believed in bonds thicker than blood. The family you choose can be just as if not more valuable to you than blood relatives.
Itās refreshing to see a movie with such a strong and meaningful message of love that goes beyond blood.
Probably the best movie Iāve seen all year.
