The Sound of Soul by Phyl Garland (Phyllis Garland) I had a really interesting conversation yesterday with a woman from Garfield who knew Mozelle Thompson. She also took the Saturday morning Tam O’Shanter classes at the museum, studied with Joseph Fitzpatrick, graduated from Peabody and studied with Jean Thoburn as well. It was great to get first hand accounts of these things that I’ve only read about. I shared her stories with a group of young artists who came through the gallery this afternoon.

She turned me on to a local female artist who I was unfamiliar with, Martha Cornelius, who professionally went by Marty Cornelius due to gender bias within her profession. This led to a short discussion of Phyllis Garland, a columnist for the Pittsburgh Courier who was professionally known as Phyl Garland. She wrote The Sound of Soul (1969 Henry Regnery Co), which was a big deal for me when I was younger and first started learning about Soul music.

It wasn’t until yesterday that it occurred to me maybe that’s also why Phyllis Garland abbreviated her first name. I thought I would share these images of the first and second editions of her book since she’s been coming up in conversation so much this month. She’s the woman standing to the right of Mozelle Thompson in the 1953 Teenie Harris photo. In addition: "the first African American and first woman to earn tenure at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism." Unpacked a few boxes of books and was curious if the 60 Minutes feature on John Edgar Wideman's Bothers and Keepers was on Youtube. Didn't find it, but I stumbled across this PBS News Hour essay. It's the type of well-spoken narrative you would expect from him along with great stock footage and photographs.

The Album Art of Mozelle Thompson; LP Illustrations 1953-1969 debuts Friday, November 7th for the upcoming First Friday Unblurred gallery crawl. The official opening reception is on Saturday, November 8th from 12-6 PM. It will include a very special performance by Roger Barbour along with original members of his group the Basic Sounds of Pittsburgh. Additional incentives for attending the retrospective and signing the guest book include a limited edition publication of biographical information about Mozelle Thompson, which includes over twenty images and a two-page discography of his album cover art, PLUS a raffle for an original 1970 first edition of Ernest Tidyman's novel Shaft, which features a Mozelle Thompson-illustrated dust cover!
