Week 7

I think logotypes are very cool, but I did not really separate them off by themselves until reading this article honestly. I think that it a elegant way to brand a business as well. I will have to look up more examples of logotypes and surprise myself with what I may fine. This week I am finishing up my final spreads for class. I am still on the fence about the color pallet, but I know I am sure to figure something out. In critique I was also told to remove the little circles around my larger circles. I think that it made the overall appearance of my spread’s cleaner. I love assignments like these where we are allowed to be creative and create things that are unusual. I had a really fun time with this assignment and will definitely be something I add to my portfolio on my website.

Aaron Draplin: “Takes On a Logo Design Challenge” Reflection

In this video, Draplin goes into detail the steps into creating a logo. Not only that but he does a wonderful job with giving us a few tips and tricks on the process of actually conceptualizing and actually putting pencil to paper for the logo. After watching this video, I have been given even more motivation on actually getting my feet wet in this field because I did enjoy the project that was assigned to us to create two logos for movie characters. As I watched this video, I compared my techniques as an amateur to Draplin’s techniques as a professional. I would highly recommend anyone who is interested in graphic design and interested in making logos as a career, because any doubt in my mind that I could not create great work with logos is long gone.

Making Logos and Marks Reading/Mark Fox interview Reflection

In this reading I thought it was interesting how he broke down what exactly a logo was the meaning and significance that makes a logo a logo. I like how in the reading he says to us that logos can be extremely valuable to the public if the company is very popular and can be worth a lot of money but just like the good companies the bad companies can cause a logo to be worthless in value. Reading this article and working on the two logos for class has helped me to understand the process of creating a logo a lot more and I feel confident on working to make my graphic design and logo creating skills even better as I continue.

PROCESS BLOG:

) Beetlejuice/Betelgeuse: - For this logo I wanted to create meaning out of something that isn’t particularly shown in the movie. In the movie Betelgeuse he is portrayed with a dirty/grungy appearance and an extremely over the top and wild/annoying personality to the other characters in the movie. So, I decided to use a fly with hair who is given the representation of something that is gross and dirty but also annoying to us by either flying around our heads or landing on things we don’t want them to. As far as the colors, I chose to keep with black and white but also use the color brown to signify dirty things a fly would land on. 2) Lydia Deetz: - For this logo I wanted to take advantage of mixing her actual appearance for the logo. In the movie Lydia is usually shown wearing some form of hat, she is also shown to have pointy/spikey bangs. I wanted to combine the two and create a loco that could be easily distinguished that is was her. As far as color I used the critiques in class to change the solid black hat to a solid red had that represents her dress in the movies.

In my project two I started out with being confused as to which quote i would be using for this project. These quotes where 1. Go out on a limb, thats where the fruit is. and 2. You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore. As you can see from the first image, I had two rough sketches for both of the quotes. However both of these sketches where both taken too literal and pretty much backhanded the two quotes as well. For example in the first one i showed a picture of someone on a tree reaching for fruit. But in the first critique it looked like we were looking at someone else go out on a limb. and in the second one it shows someone looking back at the shore completely backhanding the quotes encouragement to actually lose sight of the shore. In the end I decided that the second quote spoke to me more than the first one so I decided to ponder exactly what I felt the quote meant to me. The quote to me was saying that you can never experience new things and see new things until you have the courage to leave your current state. whether that state be comfortable or not, you have to be willing to climb over this “wall” to see another “world” or opportunities. I began to illustrate a girl in the first rough draft but I wanted to include myself literally in this quote because it meant something to me in my everyday life. so I took three photos of myself i different positions to insinuate walking, climbing, and looking at the new world. I then cut and outlines myself and placed myself on top of the backgrounds that I created (the only thing used in this project that was not from my own illustration was the two pieces of tape on the quote ate the top of the image). I really enjoyed how it came out when it was finished.

Reading Reflection #2

I really enjoyed looking at this work and I liked how creative they were specially with the neon light sign that was controlled through a bike. I also enjoyed how confident he was throughout the interview. This is a great quality that I aim for when working to become an artist, is a a high level of confidence with a great execution rate. I think thats where I have my most issues is with execution and how to illustrate my thoughts. So this reading really had me thinking when the interviewer asked him what does he look for with people he is looking for an intern, he says “good ideas well executed”. I wish to be just that, an artist that has good ideas and can execute them flawlessly.

I’m not sure if I was supposed to post this before the final project or after like we did for the snippets, but I wanted to post my process for project two ahead of time. So, in this sketch or in these sketches, I was having trouble deciding between two different quotes. In the first one I wanted to kind of illustrate the actual words of the quote because I feel like I could create something beautiful with the literal words of the quote. In the second one I wanted to show someone looking through binoculars towards the shore as if someone was already on the sea.

Reading Reflection

In the reading it made me put myself or in some ways relate to his starting out story, because I never really knew where I was supposed to fit in when it came to my creativity and love for technological creative type things, So I would always look at this field as a hobby or a place where there were never a place or a decent career but as I got older I realized that this field is now one of the main building blocks of the world. Like in the reading it mentions the apple brand being one of the main tools to use and I feel like that with the generations to come that is just going to keep advancing with new ideas as the years go by. As someone who has been learning to find where they fit in when it comes to this fields I definitely feel like this reading has made me feel a lot more motivated to continue my dreams!!

SNIPPETS:

In the first project I definitely struggled with finding three set of phrases to come up with something meaningful but also creative at the same time. But I managed to think a little more and finally bring together my snippets. For the first one I was thinking about the phrase “Justice for all” and how it can be looked at with confusion because from the recent movements regarding BLM, LGBTQ+, and the stop Asian hate movement as well. I wanted to create something that could be seen as relatable but also in a way that made you think about what was really going on. In the next one go with the flow, reminded me of what someone told me when I was trying to figure out how to deal with being a over thinker and they told me that I should picture my thoughts that I worried about in a river floating away and that I shouldn’t dwell on them to long so the fish to me represent movement and serenity. In the last one was kind of difficult to illustrate but I just pictured myself in all of the bad situations that I’ve overcome with time. So I wanted to use an alarm clock to insinuate that this time will come to pass.
