Shattered trust

I thought I knew your touch, your gaze,

The whispered words that set ablaze

A love I thought was ours to keep,

But now I lie here, wide awake, to weep.

Beneath the lies, I saw your face,

Each secret smile, a cold embrace.

I trusted you with every part,

But you had torn apart my heart.

The pain of betrayal cuts deeper when the person who cheated on you was the one you once called home. He made you feel safe, loved, and cherished—like no matter what was happening in the world, you were enough. The way he held you close, made you laugh, shared his dreams with you—it all felt real, so real that you let yourself believe it would last forever. You trusted him with your heart in ways you hadn’t trusted anyone before, and it felt like you finally found a place to belong, a place where you could rest your soul. He made you feel like home.

But now, all of that feels shattered. The very person who once gave you comfort and warmth is the one who tore it all apart. The betrayal stings because it wasn’t just a broken promise—it’s the destruction of everything you thought you knew about love. And even though the hurt is unbearable, even though your heart aches in ways you never thought possible, there’s a part of you that’s still scared to let go. Scared of losing the love you thought you had, scared of facing a world without him in it, because he made you feel like you were everything to him once.

You gave him all your love, every ounce of trust and vulnerability you could offer. You loved him so much that the thought of moving on feels impossible, like you’re leaving behind a piece of yourself. How do you even begin to let go of someone who made you feel like you had found your forever? You don’t know how to pick up the pieces when the person you thought you would grow old with has shattered your world. It feels like you’re walking away from your future, and the weight of that fear is paralyzing.

You’re afraid to start over again. You’re terrified of giving your heart to someone new, of facing the rawness of starting fresh when all you want is to crawl back into the comfort of his arms, even though you know you shouldn’t. You’re scared of being alone in a world that no longer feels safe, of wondering if anyone will ever make you feel the way he did, even though you now know that feeling was built on a lie.

And yet, the fear of moving on, the fear of having to rebuild yourself from the wreckage of your past, is so overwhelming. You loved him more than you ever thought possible, and letting go feels like losing everything. Every piece of joy you once felt with him now feels tainted, but still, the love lingers—a love so strong it makes you feel as though you can’t breathe, as though you’ll never be able to truly let him go.

People couldn’t understand why I stayed after everything, after the lies, the betrayal. But they didn’t see the moments before, the pieces of him I still loved, or the hope I couldn’t shake. It wasn’t about being blind; it was about something deeper, something only I could feel. Maybe it was a mistake, but it was mine to make.

It’s like standing at the edge of a cliff, knowing that the fall will hurt, but still hoping the wind will somehow soften the blow. You give yourself away, piece by piece, believing that someone who’s already shown you they can leave, might stay this time. You ignore the voice inside that tells you to walk away, to choose yourself. Instead, you stay in a cycle of doubt, love, and disappointment, convincing yourself that if you give just a little more, they might finally see your worth.

But in the end, you’re the one who loses, because you’ve poured your energy into someone who isn’t even giving you the decency of honesty. You’ve chosen someone who, time and again, proved they wouldn’t choose you. And it stings, because deep down, you know you deserve more, yet you still hold on, too afraid of what it might mean to let go and choose you, even though it’s the only real chance at healing.

It's not just the betrayal itself that hurts, but the fact that you didn’t trust your own worth enough to walk away, to stand tall and say, “I deserve better.”
