AND THAT’S A CRIME ! ! !
hi
hi
you’ve been placed on a majorcan island with ten other people, and you have to share a double bed with one of them. it’s all part of a game, and the goal? well, it depends on your how you see it. romantics say the aim of the game is to find love; cynics say the aim is to stay in a couple until the final for the chance to win the £50,000 prize. with 69 cameras installed, the contenstants’ every move is captured, sending the footage right back to the millions of viewers at home to judge freely. but watch out: the game won’t be easy! twists and turns await around every corner, and some of them will sabotage your relationship entirely. will you be the couple to win the game? apply to find out!
WHY WHITE WASHING, STRAIGHT WASHING, ETC MINORITY CHARACTERS IS ALWAYS WRONG (with visuals!)
hey friends! it’s been a little while since I’ve been around tumblr, but I’m in the mood to rant about tumblr’s shitty behavior today. today I want to talk about why taking a minority character of any kind and changing what makes them a minority in your portrayal of that character is ALWAYS WRONG. like I said in the title I have some visuals to help explain this, but first I want to define what “majority” and “minority” characters are so that we’re all on the same page.
a “majority” character, is one that is part of a privileged group. this can be male characters, white characters, straight characters, cisgender characters, christian characters, etc. these characters are modeled after what, for a very long time, especially in america, have been the privileged groups among society. conversely, “minority” characters are those that come from historically oppressed groups such as women, people of color, gay/lesbian/bisexual/asexual/etc people, transgender/nonbinary/agender/etc people and so on. as you can probably imagine, part of the privilege that people that in habit the majority groups of society experience is that they get to see themselves represented in all kinds of media from movies to television to literature to music. majority groups are the “norm”. they’re everywhere. you could turn on any television show, open any book, play any movie and I can guarantee you that there is at least one, if not multiple straight, white, cisgender male characters with large roles. unfortunately this privilege of representation is not one that minority folks experience. I don’t have exact numbers, but it’s not hard to recognize that people of any minority are much more hard pressed to find accurate, well-written representation for themselves in mainstream media. the characters are there, yes, but there’s much fewer of them, a lot of the time they’re poorly or inaccurately written or that character is written or killed off at some point. basically, there isn’t an even split of representation of majority and minority characters and this is an integral point as to why white washing, straight washing and other such concepts are incredibly harmful to minority characters.
now, lets take two bowls and fill them up with candy to represent this split. in the left bowl we have red candies representing the majority characters. again, these are the straight characters, white characters, male characters, etc of the world. on the right we have blue candies to represent the minority characters. these are the lgbt+ characters, non white characters, female/trans/nonbinary characters, etc of the world. lets assume some of these minority characters are gay, alright? look at what happens when you take those gay characters and represent them as a straight majority character:
the lgbt community and specifically gay people lose representation where they already had VERY LITTLE to begin with. this is why it’s harmful to make any minority character a majority character. you’re taking something away from a group that already has to scavenge and hope for representation because they barely have any. you’re tipping the balance unfairly even more in favor of the majority groups. these characters were made to give these minority groups more representation and by turning that character white/straight/male/cisgender/etc you’re taking that away from them.
another common point in this argument that I often hear is that people (usually privileged people) don’t understand why its not okay to make a minority character a majority character but it IS okay to make a majority character a minority character. well, let’s keep with the same metaphor of the candy. as shown before, making a gay character straight can be detrimental to the already small amount of representation we have of gay characters, but lets look at what happens when we make some straight characters gay:
all it does is even out the split a bit more. people that experience the privilege of living as part of a majority group still have tons of straight characters to watch and relate to and feel represented by, but now gay people also have more representation! it’s more equal, and if you’re upset by this, it probably means you only like the idea of equality, and not the practice. or maybe you don’t actually like it at all. which is pretty shitty of you man. this scenario doesn’t hurt anyone, it only benefits the minority groups by giving them more character to relate to and be represented by.
while I’m on this subject I should also mention that this also goes for changing an already minority character to a different minority. for instance, to make a canonically gay character bisexual, or vice versa, would be to take away from the representation of gay or bisexual characters. to make a black character asian, or vice versa, would take away from representation for black or asian people. don’t take from a minority group that already has very little representation, even if you’re going to make that character a different minority. it’s a shitty thing to do. if you want more characters of a certain minority, either create them yourself or take from the majority.
TLDR; if you straight wash / white wash / etc please unfollow me because it’s gross and I don’t want to be anywhere near that Garbage thanks <3
hey it’s been forever since I’ve been here but uh I need to write up a thing bc people are apparently still trash lmao
Confession: @jockhunta is so sweet and also? adorable. their veronica?? an ICON.

how to properly write an indian character (racebent or not):
INDIA IS DIVERSE. what this should mean to you is that the culture in one state may be very different from the culture in a neighboring state. there are always similarities, but the differences are VERY important.
FOOD. like i said, india is very diverse. the food’s going to be made differently, and the popular foods will vary from state to state and even from town to town, village to village. there’s like 347454578 types of biryani, and not all parts of india like to use a lot of spice or a lot of oil. it all depends, and you need to do your research before you decide what your muse’s favorite indian dish. (the indian restraunts you see in western countries are usually,,, not all that accurate. we don’t eat butter chicken and naans everyday, but god i know some of us wish we did).
LANGUAGE. again, india is very diverse and it has a lot of languages. one of the main problems is that because of how many languages each part of india speaks, it’s hard to connect the country’s people as a whole. that means not everyone speaks hindi. in most cases, a person will speak the common language found in their particular area, and that’ll be their mother tongue. this is especially true in the more southern areas. this means you need to know where your muse’s hometown is or where their parents’ hometown is, or whatever the case may be. (let me clarify: most ppl that went through indian schooling will learn the common language in the area, hindi, and english. but if you’re a first immigrant like myself, sometimes you’ll only focus on one main language rather than two. like i know telugu, but not hindi. it all depends, but make a conscious decision when thinking about this).
RELIGION. not all indians are hindu and muslim. buddhism and jainism have a great following there, and it’s important to choose wisely here. of course, i cannot speak accurately about the latter three religions, but if you choose to have your muse be hindu, please understand that there are sects within hinduism. not everyone practices the same thing. not everyone celebrates the same holidays. do your research.
SOUTH INDIANS VS. NORTH INDIANS. this is VERY, VERY, VERY important topic. south indians and north indians can trace their ancestry to two different groups, so we have very different physical features. the most apparent one is our skin tones. south indians are generally darker. we generally celebrate holidays a little differently, but that can also be due to that person’s religion and their specific sect. marriages are different, foods are made differently. you need to look into the specifics for each particular state.
DO NOT USE LIGHT SKIN INDIAN AESTHETICS FOR SOUTH INDIANS. it is VERY disrespectful, especially taking into account how colorism is very overbearing in india and desi communities. yes there are light skin south indians and dark skin north indians, but please don’t act like you can use light skin aesthetics for a dark skinned indian. the whole problem is that we’re pressured into lightening our skin, and if we don’t, then we’re not desirable/beautiful. it’s takes a toll on all of us, so if you’re not indian, please be wary with the way you go about this. (of course there are exceptions like maybe you see a light skin indian model wearing a traditional outfit that you feel like your muse would wear, then that’s fine! bc the main focus is the clothing, not the model themselves).
DO NOT USE A NORTH INDIAN FACECLAIM FOR YOUR SOUTH INDIAN MUSE. and vice versa. it’s more problematic if you use a north indian fc for your south indian muse because south indians are seen as lower than north indians. the Ideal Indian is what people usually attribute to north indians, (we’re all told to be more like the north indians) so you’re completely supporting the erasure (when you think of india, you usually picture north indian cultures, south indians are grossly underrepresented in western media) and hate of south indians when you choose a north indian fc over a south indian fc for your south indian character.
ESTRANGED FROM THEIR CULTURE. if your muse is more estranged from indian culture, then you need to explain why and what aspects they are separated from. desi communities in western countries will be different from indians actually living in india (as with most immigrant vs native communities). take some time to find some first hand accounts from indians living in the same country your muse is. it’s okay for your muse to be estranged from their culture, it happens to many people of color, not just indians. you just have to take into account how that can affect their confidence in their own heritage and things like that.
CASTE SYSTEM. yes, i understand that it’s literally illegal for discrimination to occur based on caste, but it still happens. it’s like how discrimination based on race still happens in western countries even though it’s usually illegal in that country. frankly, not many young indians take caste into account when they make their friends (but realize that there’s still a lot of discrimination within schools, workplaces, and social areas). the caste system still holds strong when it comes to arranged marriages, but more and more young people are choosing to have inter-caste marriages, something the older generations are wary of.
STEREOTYPES. if you are not indian then it is not your place to reclaim any stereotypes. so stay away from customer service jobs and convenience store owners. of course, if your muse is smart, that’s not necessarily something that always negatively impacts indians, but be careful with the way you word certain things.
it’s very obvious when someone doesn’t do their research, so please, take your time. use multiple sources. take notes. don’t just look on wikipedia for fifteen minutes and say that’s all the info you need. india has many cultures, and many of them overlap. it’s up to you to do the research and understand how all of this affects your muse. (also, this isn’t a comprehensive list, so take that into account when you’re researching).

the whole “fiction doesn’t affect reality” argument is actually kinda racist…
people talk about like how finding nemo and jaws are great examples but nobody ever talks about how fiction has shaped our perceptions of different racial and ethnic groups like do you think the media has no hand in why alot of ignorant white people think africa is a desertland and not a continent of different countries, full of rich and diverse cultures, beautiful buildings and riches? or why they think asia is only japan, korea and china? when asia is also india, bhutan, the Philippines, nepal, etc? do you think that media and fiction hasnt allowed whites to view black people as ignorant and lazy thru cartoons and minstrel shows? like if you really think what youre seeing on tv doesnt affect reality and how people think then like. you must be fuckin stupid.
there are several studies which prove this by the way. like how black children (and white girls) self esteem is negatively impacted by media.
studies show our perception about asian americans, and their perceptions of themselves are impacted by media.
there are harmful psychological effects on native americans thanks to sports mascots.
stereotypes of latino/latina/latines in media have - you guessed it - harmful effects - including political ones
how about how inaccurate race and poverty images in the news effect our views on welfare?
positive images of disability effect disabled people positively, where as negative images effect them negatively
the availability of GLB roles on TV positively impacts the gay community
and i honestly i could go on and on and on and on
i know i know water is wet, all these studies to tell you what common sense could. but like … there is very real research out there that shows fiction has a very real harmful impact on minority communities. and that positive representation has a positive effect on these communities.
so no. fiction is never just fiction. and frankly people who think fiction is just fiction can fuck off.
