โoh,โ she says with a nod, the kind that implies complete understanding, even though josieโs explanation just leaves her with more questions. she doesnโt like to ADMIT when thereโs a gapย in her knowledge (ย especially not when sheโs conversing with a ravenclaw ), so ginny does her very bestย to come across as if she gets it, with that it being a muggle tv show that she can pretty confidently say sheโs neverย seen or heard of before tonight.ย โthatโsโฆ- fun,โ even sheย can admit that she sounds as if sheโs trying to describe a dental procedureย positively, though at least she isย trying.ย โi really loveย arthur. i love when that- that guyย has an anvil dropped on his head.โย
โI donโt think that happened.โ Josie says, eyeing Ginny SKEPTICALLY. Granted, she canโt claim to be an EXPERT on muggle television โ everything she knew about the costume she sported had been taught to her in the past few weeks, or collected in her ( admittedly RUDIMENTARY ) research prior to this event.ย โIt probably wouldโve traumatised a few children if it did.โ She pauses,ย โThen again, Iโve never pretended to be an expert on muggle television, so who knows what they like to watch.โ

There was something about talking to LUNA LOVEGOOD that always made Josephine feel BETTER about herself. Perhaps it was the otherโs perpetual ENTHUSIASM, or her near relentless genuine OPTIMISM, that always left Josie in a slightly more positive mood than the one sheโd started out in. Or, perhaps, it was the familiarity that came with knowing someone for such a long time โ having grown up together and both being sorted into RAVENCLAW during the same year at Hogwarts. Despite their outward DIFFERENCES, Josie and Luna had remarkably similar roots โ something which helped put Josie at EASE in a situation where it was all too easy for her to feel anything but.
โThank you.โ Josie says with a laugh, shaking her head amusedly. TRUTHFULLY, sheโd not heard of the show until DENNIS had suggested it as a costume โ Josie didnโt exactly grow up surrounded by MUGGLE culture, and much of it was still unfamiliar to her, but sheโd been EAGER to quickly embrace it.ย โNot sure if very red is a compliment or not, but Iโll take it.โ She chuckles โ though she knows that the words that come from Lunaโs mouth are very rarely SINISTER.ย โSheโs not the main character,โ Josie says with a shrug ( and if that isnโt the story of her life ),ย โBut sheโs probably the coolest, I think. Iโve only seen a few episodes, but she seemed the coolest.โ
martha--stroutโ:
The world was slowly spinning on its axis just like it normally did only now Martha was wildly aware of that spin. The room swarmed around her as she drank from her fifth cup of firewhiskey, the taste of which hadnโt bothered her in the slightest since the third cup. She felt none of the guilt she normally felt when drinking, thoughts of Judith having been silenced after sheโd finished her second cup. The room spun as she stood from the couch but she held on tightly to the armrest until it was bearable enough to make her way forward.ย
The haunted house was bustling with energy; energy that she wanted nothing to do with but felt obligated to attend. But sheโd fix that now.ย
ย She was on the hunt for someone who always made her feel better, someone who always put a smile on her face, which was exactly what she needed right now as she was slowly approaching another side to drunk Martha that she didnโt like; sad drunk Martha. She could feel it slowly approaching like on oncoming train and wanted nothing to do with it. Making her way down a hallway, this side of the house was much more quiet besides the occasional piercing scream echoing down the hallway. She found her target there and grinned.ย
Coming up beside her, she drunkenly put her arms around the girls shoulders. Buryig her face in Josieโs hair, she inhaled and hummed contently at the pleasant smell.ย โHey Jo,โ her voice was naturally deeper in her drunken state and she swayed lightly on her feet,ย โI missed you, I always miss you so much when youโre away.โ @jodiggoryโ
BIG PARTIES were never really Josephineโs SCENE โ she always felt slightly AWKWARD and out of place, as though she were always a few beats behind her peers and desperately trying to keep pace. Sheโd always watched her siblings navigate these sorts of social situations with the ease afforded to them by CONFIDENCE, something which, by contrast, the middle DIGGORY was sorely lacking. However, since the ATTACK almost a year ago now ( though feeling much more fresh in Josieโs memories, however hazy they were ), being ALONE was equally unbearable โ at least this party allowed them the pleasure of NOISE to drown out their own racing thoughts and paranoid anxieties.
Had it not been DENNIS and MARTHA who had invited her along this evening, there was every likelihood that Josie would not be here. Sure, a crowded room was still preferable to memories that seemed to haunt her daily โ but it was still UNCOMFORTABLE. It was easy for Josie to blend into the background and be all but forgotten by the other attendees โ hovering on the edge of a conversation among a few of her former classmates and nodding along as she needed to. ADMITTEDLY, the small amount of alcohol now buzzing through her system made the evening a little more bearable โ drowning out her anxieties quite nicely, though she wouldnโt allow herself to indulge TOO greatly.ย
Josie canโt help but STARTLE when she suddenly feels someoneโs arms around her โ jerking awkwardly to the side to catch a glimpse of the assailant only to find no danger whatsoever, only the slightly DRUNKEN smile of MARTHA STROUT. It had not gone unnoticed that Josie hadnโt seen Martha in at least an hour or so โ though she knew it was likely due to Martha having better things to do than hang around with her all night long โ so her reappearance is a WELCOME relief.ย โCalm down, itโs only been, like, an hour.โ She says, staunchly IGNORING the way her heart seems to flutter over the words I missed you.ย A pause follows, slightly too long ( an I missed you tooย may have followed, were Josie two or three more drinks in ),ย โWhere did you run off to?โ

the candle smelled atrocious. it was supposed to be pumpkin spice, but all that came through was a nearly painful amount of cinnamon with only the barest hint of nutmeg. worse than that, it was a migraine inducing shade of orange, though calling it orange was perhaps an insult to the color as a whole. augustine loved it.ย โi think iโm going to buy 50 of these horrible, horrible things.โ
โIt kind of smells like poison,โ Josie says, picking one of the candles up and smelling it herself โ face scrunching in DISTASTE over the scent ( she wasnโt the biggest fan of cinnamon overall, but she would have thought that even the most avid lover would be put off by how pungent this candle was ).ย โYouโre not serious, are you? What are you going to do with them all? I think lighting this for even ten minutes would have anyoneโs house smelling like cinnamon for months.โ

โdo you think anyone actually buysย this sort of thing?โ she asks, plucking one of the odd little wares from its table and holding it to the watery autumn light. her curiosity mightโve gotten the best of her, but she really didnโt mean to judgeโฆ even if the little trill of disbelieving laughter she gave said otherwise,ย โi canโt imagine what useย it is to anyone, though i suppose i mightnโt be a halloweenโฆย expert?โ
โIโve got no idea,โ Josie says with a laugh โ eyeing the decoration skeptically ( from her best guess it was some sort of decoration โ a strange SKELETON figure hanging from a string, though not quite a human shaped one ).ย โSurely someone has to, right? Otherwise they wouldnโt be turning a profit.โ Then again, maybe they werenโtย โ the stall had been quite QUIET since Josie had first walked up to it and started eyeing off the wares.ย

โIโm meant to be Francine,โ Josie explains, red converse dragging nervously across the floor as she nurses the same drink sheโs been working on for the past hour ( itโs VODKA and ORANGE JUICE โ horribly watered down by this point, with the ice long melted and creating a horribly diluted MESS that has done absolutely NOTHING to quell her anxiety over being here ), though she remains STEADFAST in her resolve to finish it, still occasionally sipping at it through a curly straw. Sheโs never considered herself to be the LIFE OF A PARTY โ not like sheโd seen from Nellie and heard about Cedric, but HALLOWEEN had always been a favourite of hers โ a chance for people to show off their IMAGINATIONS and pretend, just for a minute, to be something other than the roles life had relegated them to.ย
โFrom Arthur,โ She continues, unsure if the person sheโs explaining her costume choice even particularly CARES what sheโs wearing, but in too deep now to turn back.ย โItโs a kidsโ cartoon. Been going since 1996, if you can believe. Iโd have thought theyโd run out of material by now, but apparently not.โ A pause,ย โThereโs people dressed as Arthur and Buster, too, so Iโm not like... a complete weirdo, I swear.โ
martha--stroutโ:
โ
โFine,โ she pouts but soon itโs replaced with a slightly dazed smile of endearment at the idea of Josie being bad at cooking. Thereโs not a lot that Martha can pinpoint Josie being bad at but the idea of her catching her kitchen on fire sparks a bit of amusement. Maybe someday sheโll be able to teach the woman a thing or two about cooking but, for now, sheโll bide her time and wait for the perfect moment. She doesnโt want to pressure her friend into something she doesnโt want to do, after all.ย
โNext time I think Iโm going to make Italian donuts with some dipping sauces on the side. Sounds good?โ She asked, making sure Josie agreed to whatever sweet treat she came up with next to make.ย โIts getting into the cooler weather now and I should be making soups soon.โ Which was another past time of hers on her days off. Taking a sip of her water, she put the cup back down and turned to look at Josie.ย
She did that a lot; look at Josie. Martha wasnโt sure how Josie hadnโt noticed that she was utterly gone for her but she thanked whatever reason there was for it because it meant that they could still be friends. Over the years, sheโd thought of telling Josie the truth about her feelings, had come up with a variety of ways she might be able to, Sheโd actually managed to work up the courage to do so a handful of times but something always stopped her; cold fear settled in her stomach and made her a coward. There was a reason she wasnโt sorted into Gryffindor, sheโd imagined. But the wanting never dissipated despite the many years that had gone by in their friendship; it was still very much a hurricane in her chest each time Josie was around or the many times during the day Martha thought of her.
โI think youโre misunderstanding me when I say Iโll happily eatย anythingย you make, Martha.โย Josie chuckles, shaking her head. It wasย RAREย for Josie to feel comfortable enough around someone to be so buoyant and open with them โ but Martha made her feelย LIGHTย in a way that few others had ever been able to replicate. Even around her family, Josie sometimes felt as though she were walking onย eggshellsย โ choosing to remainย quietย rather than say the wrong thing, fearing that her opinion wereย UNWANTED, and prematurely deciding not to share it, even if this were not always the case. With MARTHA, Josie had never been made to feel that way โ as though her words didnโt carry the sameย weightย as others โ in fact, theย undividedย attention Martha afforded her made her feelย wholeย in a way she often didnโt โ like aย REAL PERSONย instead of a shell.
โBut, for what itโs worth, I donโt think you can possibly go wrong with any kind of donuts โ so, thatโs my two-cents.โ She laughs again, taking another mouthful of the pastries Martha had prepared. Perhaps if she werenโt quite so STUCK in her own insecurities, Josie would notice the way that Martha looked at her โ perhaps she would notice the joy the other derived from baking for her and seeing Josie enjoy it. Perhaps sheโd see this and be able to work up the COURAGE to confront her own feelings โ but, as it stands, Josie does none of these things. MARTHA had always been a bright spot in her life โ far too bright to ever be shadowed by plain, boring, clumsy JOSEPHINE โ and so this is what she allowed herself to believe, that their friendship could only ever be that โ FRIENDSHIP. One, mind you, Josie felt incredibly gratefulย for.
Perhaps, were she a little braver, sheโd say something about how beautiful Martha looked today, even in her work clothes. Or she would tell her how much she admired her, how thankful she was that Martha deigned her worthy to be in her company. Instead, she says โย โIโm dreading going back to work after this now, the dayโs going to be all downhill from here.โ She shakes her head,ย โSomeone misplaced a pile of court summon, so my boss is on a manhunt. Iโm like... ninety percent sure it wasnโt me.โ

TRUTHFULLY, athletics had never been Josieโs THINGย โ Nellie and Cedric had always sported more physical prowess than she had ( though perhaps their more obvious effort in such areas had seen them excel far beyond Josephine ). HOWEVER, this race was for CHARITY, and sheโd been convinced to sign herself up by some of her more persuasive colleagues โ and, despite herself, Josie was actually somewhat EXCITED to be competing ( whether she would win was a completely different question altogether โ she didnโt have quite that much faith in herself ).ย
Being paired with BENJAMIN MALKIN is met with INDIFFERENCE from Josie โ sheโd never had much to do with the man, but he seemed nice enough, and she supposed sheโd rather be stuck with a relative stranger than someone she knew and couldnโt stand. A chuckle escapes her mouth at the harmless teasing,ย โI hope so,โ She says,ย โThey donโt call me the speedster for nothing.โ A pause,ย โThey donโt really call me that, Iโm not sure why I said that.โ

The brunette struggled to not roll her eyes as she witnessed yet another sorceror pull their head out of the tub of apples, failing yet again at the classic game. Sofia may have grown up in the wizarding world but she knew many of the games tonight were taking from the muggle world and it seemed they even got right on the money with rigging a few of them to always have the individual fall short of the prize.ย โHow many more galleons do you think theyโll spend before they finally get an apple?โ Hazel eyes turning to the presence next to her, whether they were watching the same scene as her though she didnโt know.
โQuite a few, Iโd imagine.โ Josie was as fond of FAIR GAMES as the next person โ but sheโd also learnt from AMOS that many of these were rigged in favour of the organisers to try and earn themselves as many galleons as possible before somebody won them, so she tended to stay away from the more obviously rigged games like the plague.ย โI always thought it was common knowledge that these things were rigged โ or was it just my dad who was a spoilsport?โ

โso, i think i am very much lost right now.โ daisy said with a laugh. there was probably some magical failsafe to get her out of there and even there wasnโt, she could probably remember a spell to get her out of there. but what was the fun in that? she turned to someone near her,ย โwhat are the chances they abandon us to eat raw corn for the rest of our days?โ she asked, a grin across her face.
Josie liked to think she was GOOD at puzzles. Well, even if she wasnโt good, she was at least better than most ( or maybe this was just the RAVENCLAW in her speaking ), so, naturally, she had assumed that the MAIZE MAZE would be no different โ that she would be in and out within twenty minutes and be able to reward herself with a treat at the end of it. This, of course, was well over forty-five minutes ago, and Josie was no closer to finding her way out of this stupid maze, seemingly running around in circles like a lab rat.ย โMerlin, I hope not,โ She says with a laugh as someone else speaks, realising ( thankfully ) that they were just as lost as her,ย โI hate corn. I thought this was supposed to be a game for children โ I feel pretty stupid getting lost in it.โ

A feeling of accomplishment rushes through her and she lets herself feel it. Itโs a good feeling, one she she relishes because she hasnโt felt good since Judithโs disappearance. Although, thatโs not true; she realizes with a start. There are sparks of happiness in the dark when sheโs around certain people; like Josie for example. As much as she wants the world to stop now that her sister is gone, it hasnโt. Things go on, time moves on, she experiences new things every day; joy is in short supply but its not skipped her altogether.ย
She has Josie to thank for most of her smiles these days, she thinks. The other still has the capacity to make her laugh or grin despite the loss that eats its way through her chest. That wound still bleeds but its staved off from rushing when Josieโs around. Which makes Martha thankful that her feelings for the other girl remain a secret because she canโt jeopardize their friendship.ย
A small grin breaks through the haze that normally surrounds her as of late and a small chuff of laughter falls from her lips.ย โItโs my first time,โ she assures the woman, picking apart her own pastry before shoveling a piece of it into her mouth to chew. Humming in content at the taste, she nods to herself; she did well.ย โThe hardest part is always the dough for pastries, I think. I havenโt run across a particularly difficult filling to make yet.โ Prepared by hand, not by magic, baking can be hard labor for Martha, which is why itโs such a good hobby for her to have right now. It allows her to shut down her mind for a moment, to allow her shoulders to loose their heaviness, and just focus on a task; its become one of her favorite things to do.ย โI can teach you a thing or two if youโd like,โ a sly grin - one might even call it flirty - flits across her lips for a moment and her eyebrows raise. Itโs a look sheโs given Josie before, one that always ends with them in some kind of trouble or daring adventure. Itโs reminiscent of Martha before Judithโs disappearance, before her death, and she feels more like herself in this moment than she has in a while.ย
Itโs NICE, Josie thinks โ to see Martha smiling. When sheโd first come to know the other, she had always been smiling โ seeming to radiate life in a way that Josie couldnโt help but be drawn to. Where Josie often felt dull and heavyย in comparison, Martha has always seemed vibrantย andย buoyantย โ a perfect contrast to Josieโs more macabre tendencies, though she would deny to herself and to others that Martha served as anything more than an opposing force in the PLATONIC SENSE ( however much she sometimes wished this wasnโt the case โ in fact, she could remember times where others would tease her about how clearly smitten she was during their final few years at Hogwarts, though Martha, thankfully, always seemed quite oblivious to the fact ).
Josie knew what it was to lose a sibling โ the kind of pain that was quite unimaginable until one experienced it for themselves. Itโs almost taken for granted that theyโll simply BE THERE throughout your life, until theyโre gone. She also knew that different people tended to react quite differently โ she only had to look as far as her own reaction to Cedricโs death and that of her sibling โ equal and opposite in effect. Seeing Martha smile had, naturally, become a more rare site since Judithโs passing, but one that Josie was determined to try and bring back โ it was a smile she had grown to love so much, after all.
โI donโt know if thatโs such a good idea,โ Josie laughs, shaking her head,ย โI think Iโd burn down my apartment if they left me in charge of cooking anything more than eggs on toast. Not sure if you want that kind of burden in the kitchen.โ Josie wasnโt sure how Martha did all of this without magic โ she could barely manage to keep her head on straight with it โ but she admired Marthaโs willingness to try ( and, of course, her success ).ย โBut Iโm happy to keep eating whatever you cook.โ She says, grinning.
