you didnโt even remember what the fight started about. something small that turned big, something you both had been holding in for way too long.
โi ainโt sayinโ it again,โ joel snapped, pacing the kitchen with that tight, frustrated energy. โyou canโt keep runninโ off without tellinโ nobody. i was worried sick.โ
โi told you, iโm fine,โ you shot back, arms crossed. โyou act like iโm a child.โ
he groaned, rubbing his face.
โiโm actinโ like someone who gives a damn. donโt twist it.โ
โthen stop yelling at me!โ you argued, voice cracking.
joel stopped pacing. he looked at youโreally lookedโand something in him twisted. he didnโt know how to handle the fear of losing someone again. didnโt know how to say it without coming off rough.
instead of talking, he let the frustration win.
his hand came down hard on the edge of the counter.
a loud bang
the glass pitcher beside him tipped
it hit the floor
shattered everywhere
and the soundโ
god, the soundโ
hit you like a punch.
your whole body reacted before your mind did.
you flinched so violently your knees almost buckled. your hands flew up over your head, shoulders curling in as you backed into the wall, breath catching in your chest like you were bracing forโ
for something that wasnโt coming.
joel froze.
the anger drained from his face instantly, replaced with horror.
โheyโ hey. sweetheart. no.โ
his voice dropped so fast it almost broke.
you were shaking, head ducked, arms up to protect yourself even though he wasnโt anywhere near you.
joel took a step toward youโ
then stopped himself, hands raised like he was approaching a scared animal.
โhoney, look at me,โ he whispered. โplease.โ
you didnโt. couldnโt. your breath was coming too fast, too shallow.
โbabyโฆ i didnโt hit you,โ he said softly, voice cracking. โi hit the counter. not you. never you.โ
slowly, you peeked up.
joel looked destroyed.
he knelt down in front of you slowly, gentler than youโd ever seen him move.
โsweetheart, i ainโt ever gonna lay a hand on you like that. i swear on my life.โ
your hands were still trembling by your head.
he reached toward you, but so slow, so carefully.
โcan i touch you?โ he asked, barely audible.
you gave a tiny nod.
he exhaled shakily and softly guided your hands down, brushing your hair back, checking your expression like you were made of glass.
โgod,โ he breathed, eyes glassy. โiโm so sorry. i didnโt thinkโฆ i didnโt know the noise would scare you like that.โ
you swallowed hard.
โi justโ it was loud. and i thoughtโโ
โi know,โ he murmured, already pulling you gently into his arms. โcome here.โ
and the moment you felt his chest, everything in you gave out. you clung to him, face pressed into his shirt as he wrapped his arms around you tight, one hand cradling the back of your head.
โyouโre safe,โ he whispered into your hair. โiโm not mad anymore. i ainโt ever gonna hurt you. not physically, not ever.โ
your voice was small.
โi didnโt mean to make you madโฆโ
he shook his head against you.
โyou didnโt. i got mad โcause iโm an idiot who cares too damn much, not โcause of anything you did.โ
he pulled back just enough to see your face, thumb wiping a tear from your cheek.
โnext time we argue?โ he said gently.
โwe talk. no yelling. no slamminโ things. i wonโt scare you like that again. i promise.โ
you nodded, still clinging to his shirt.
joel softened, brushing his forehead against yours.
โthereโs my girl,โ he whispered. โiโm right here. i ainโt goinโ anywhere.โ
and he didnโt let go of you for the rest of the night.
