I never had a real house to grow up in. You know, a home. I never belonged anywhere. And all my life, I was looking for that... thing. You know? Thinking that it was out there somewhere and all I had to do was find it.

Why is being a lawyer a heavyily conservative field?
I think there’s a number of reasons conservatives are drawn to the legal field. First and foremost being that it’s prestigious, respectable, and historically, white male dominated. It’s also VERY nepotism driven, especially in private practice. This makes for a very insular culture at the most influential legal institutions so that even though more women and people of color are establishing themselves in the field, those people also tend to be more conservative.
I think another aspect is that law itself, as practiced in America, is definitionally conservative. Common law is precedent based—that means it’s backwards looking and adverse to change. It’s not at all surprising to me that conservative people would be attracted to a field that is inherently conservative.
Furthermore, legal practice is very rarely about being right. It’s about having the best argument to advance your client’s position. Given that facts are so often contrary conservative beliefs, I can understand why many conservatives are actually quite good at being lawyers. To be a good lawyer when the facts are against you requires not only the ability to argue illogically but also to be able to effectively conceal the flaws in your argument.
I feel like law school and private practice made me more conservative than I was before (not that I would describe myself as a conservative - just more conservative than I was going into the profession). Also, for context, I'm Canadian, so conservative is a less loaded term.
A couple reasons that I've reflected on:
Constitutional law cases actually tested my own internal limits of how far I think it's reasonable for a government to reach. I still think the government should have a lot of say on certain matters, but there are cases where I went "huh, I actually think I should be able to decide for myself".
I learned how taxation works in tax law and am reminded by clients constantly how many decisions they make based on tax results and realized that "taxing corporations more" (which was my stance pre-law school) is not the simple fix I thought it was. There are tradeoffs to all tax policies and it does change how people act.
Private practice (not in a big firm, mostly for my own clients) turned me into a business owner (though I'm not partner yet) for better and worse.
You're around a lot of conservative people. Other lawyers, accountants, your clients (typically small business people). This shifts the sense of what is normal. (On the plus side, I have also seen this de-radicalize people from the far right to just like, normal conservative).
The nature of the profession is to worry about things that could go wrong. Over time, I think that turns into dislike of change, because things could go wrong.
I think you bring up a lot of good points. I do think that going to law school and practicing law is very moderating for the reasons you’re describing. For me, my core beliefs didn’t change much, but becoming a lawyer certainly made me more realistic about the limitations of laws and regulations to further liberalism.
That’s part of the reason that I’ve described myself as a moderate before. While my core beliefs are extremely liberal, my understanding of the world is such that I now believe only moderate and incremental steps over time can affect the changes I’d like to see in the world around me. A lot of that understanding comes directly from my law school education and my practice as a government attorney.
I think "moderating" is actually a really accurate description of my experience with the law. I think you just learn at a certain point that everything has nuance, nothing is black and white, and that any hard stance you take will end in you being proven wrong. You don't meet many lawyer radicals (and the ones you do meet tend to not have a normal successful practice).
I'd agree that my core values haven't changed, but I do think my understanding of how the world works has been updated, which changes what I think should be done.

personally? i enjoy being a fan of characters who have done Wrong. i like when a character is not a perfect victim, has hurt people, has transgressed, has done bad things. sometimes its nice to feel the sting yknow? and to recognize that a character is not a flawless perfect victim, but is deserving of understanding and compassion anyway. a lot of people in fandom refuse to let go of moral absolutism and its... rough.

learning that addiction is a progressive narrowing of the range of things that make one happy was kinda life changing for me. i apply it to everything not even just addiction i am always checking to ask if i am narrowing my range of happiness or widening it
