Mr. Schow: These are both called against the Member for Edmonton-Gold Bar, who was heard multiple times – and I suspect that this is the root of many points of order from some of my colleagues as well this afternoon – saying, “How much did they pay you?” when the Premier was referring to the success of chartered surgical facilities in the province, seeing the increased number of surgeries completed every year is on the up whereas the number of surgeries completed by AHS is on the decline.

To suggest that the Premier herself is getting paid something or is benefiting financially from these contracts is clearly out of line.

When I said, “How much are they paying you?” I meant the entire UCP cabinet, so for that, I’m sorry. And I am sorry that we don’t know how much the UCP cabinet has made off of these chartered surgical deals.

Mr. Schmidt: You know, the property taxes in the city of Edmonton went up almost 5 per cent this last fiscal year.

Mr. Eggen: Eight point nine.

Mr. Schmidt: My friend from Edmonton-North West is saying 8.9. I must have been dreaming, I guess, when I thought it was only . . .

Mr. Eggen: But I’m going to pay my taxes.

Mr. Schmidt: Yeah. I don’t have a choice. I have to pay my taxes. My friend from Edmonton-North West is also going to pay his taxes. It doesn’t seem fair to me, it doesn’t seem fair to my friend from Edmonton-North West or to any resident of the city of Edmonton that we still have to pay our property taxes but the government of Alberta can arbitrarily decide not to pay its property taxes, Mr. Speaker.

Mr. Schow: When the Member for Edmonton-Gold Bar was speaking in his second supplemental, with reference to the Premier and changes to the conflicts of interest, he said – and I have the benefit of the Blues: “the minister wouldn’t have his job if the Premier had been up front about her plan to line her own pockets during the campaign.” The Member for Edmonton-Gold Bar is clearly making an accusation that the Premier is taking bribes and lining her own pockets.

The Speaker: Order. That is an absolutely unacceptable gesture directed to the Government House Leader, for which you can return to your seat and apologize.

Mr. McIver: Jackass.

The Speaker: Order. The hon. Member for Calgary-Hays will rise to his feet and apologize.

Mr. McIver: I do apologize, Mr. Speaker.

Mr. Schmidt: I apologize that the House leader is so sensitive and had to rise on that point.

The Speaker: No. You don’t apologize for that. You apologize for making an inappropriate gesture at the doorway to the Chamber. You will do so, or you will be named and you will leave the Chamber until a committee deals with it.

Mr. Schmidt: I have offered my apology, Mr. Speaker. Thank you.

The Speaker: You will be well served that the Speaker spoke last week about not judging the quality of an apology. You behaved like my 12-year-old, slowly waltzing across this Chamber after being spoken to directly. It’s absolutely unacceptable and unbecoming of a member of this Assembly.

Mr. Schmidt: Can the minister please explain to Albertans why they continue to pay for this pass? Can’t we all just enjoy Kananaskis for free, the way Peter Lougheed intended?

Mr. Loewen: I’d like to talk about our parks here. I like to promote them everywhere. As for the K pass, it’s under review with a new Premier and a new crew. We want to ensure it’s fair and good and accomplishing all that it should. Viewing a mountain, its peaks like a steeple, it’s a fact that parks are for people.

Mr. Schmidt: Given that there once was a man from Nantucket . . .

Mr. Schmidt: Now, first of all, the bill – a lot of the comments that I will offer tonight are based on work by Shaun Fluker and Lorian Hardcastle, who are some hard-working lawyers at the University of Calgary. They run a fabulous law blog called ablawg.ca, and they provide a lot insightful analysis on legislation. I’m disappointed in the name. I personally would’ve preferred it if they’d called it Bob Loblaw law blog, but, you know, there are so many missed opportunities in this world, and the lawyers at the University of Calgary certainly had missed one there. But I digress.

Ms Issik: You know what else? As a mom I raised two boys, and I can tell you first-hand that when finances get tight, the first thing you do is decide whether or not your child is going to be able to play soccer or go to dance lessons, and it’s an incredibly hard decision as a parent to have to make a decision like that. Right now, after everything that kids have been through in the pandemic, they need activities, really, more now than ever. These are tough decisions. So that’s why we’re going to help parents with children. A hundred dollars a month makes the difference between being able to put your child in soccer or not in lots of cases.

Ms Hoffman: My question to the minister would be: would the minister be willing to come tour Delton and Spruce Avenue schools and see first-hand the plants that she says are in good operational condition that don’t need to be replaced? I’d be happy to go with her. If she’d rather I not be there, that’s fine, too, but I think it’s really important for the minister to know first-hand why these two projects were in the capital plan. Again, this is the aggregated list; there are individual lists as well. So if the minister wanted to address the growth pressures in the southwest or the northeast or both – they’re all in year 1 because they’re all needed projects – I think that that would be important for the minister to consider. What she did say in response to the earlier exchange . . .

Mr. Bilous: We see the number of red alerts where there are no ambulances available in a city reach record highs in the province’s history. The fact that we have children’s hospitals with lineups where they have to wait for hours: that blows my mind. Where are we living? I thought we were living in Alberta. I thought we were living in one of the richest provinces in the country and one of the wealthiest provinces.

An Hon. Member: Hear, hear.

Mr. Bilous: Then please explain to me how there’s a lineup outside a children’s hospital.

An Hon. Member: You’re seeing things.

Mr. Bilous: I can’t get my head around that. I’m not seeing things. That’s documented in the paper. There are photos of lineups of families and kids waiting to be admitted.

Mr. Schmidt: As some of my colleagues have mentioned, a lot of these captive insurance companies are currently domiciled in Bermuda. Allow me to take a brief tangent, if you will, Mr. Speaker, on the topic of Bermuda. I want to extend my congratulations to the Canada under 17 women’s soccer team, who defeated Bermuda this afternoon with a score of 5-nil. So congratulations to them. Of course, the U-17 Canadian women’s soccer team has an important connection to Edmonton-Gold Bar. The grandfather of one of the players on the team is a resident of Gold Bar and a friend of mine. We are all very proud of the accomplishments of the under 17 women’s Canadian soccer team in their defeat of Bermuda. So, you know, Bermuda, we came for your soccer team today; we’re coming for your insurance companies tomorrow. You’ve been given notice.
