•. to kick it off, john would definitely want a serious relationship. this man does not date for fun; if he pursues a romantic relationship with someone, it is because he has the intention to settle down with that person.
•. because he has never been in a relationship before, john would feel a bit nervous around or intimidated by the person he likes, even if he knows they like him back. it goes to say that john doesn't feel this way because he's scared (let's be real here...), but due to lack of experience.
•. pleasure for his partner goes before his. this man will endure uncomfortable cuddling positions, going out into crowded public spaces, actively engaging in something he has no interest in, etc. as long as it makes his partner happy.
•. his romantic relationship(s) would be mostly nonsexual — this is not really intentional, due to his thyroid implant, but john would want to bond with his partner outside of romantic or sexual endeavors. later down the line, if the relationship is going smoothly and both parties achnowledge wanting to partake in carnal behaviour (such as this hehe), john will most likely take hormonal medications to engage in intercourse with his partner.
•. to futher build on my last point, john believes that sex is something sacred and tender (much to the disappointment of his... needier fanbase, lol!). he's not ignorant to it, he has seen movies (in a few occassions, though not many), that treat sex in different ways. due to the defenslessness, vulnerability, and original goal of the activity, he has made up his mind on the fact that it isn't something he would like to take part in casually. definitely something his partner would have to work up to. (much to my disappointment as well 😿)
•. john values a platonic connection with his partner over a romantic one. although romantic aspects are nice, john wants him and his partner to be compatible in a way where he is sure he would like to spend the rest of his life with them. he values the idea that his partner is not only his future/current spouse, but also his best friend whom he can trust with and talk to about anything.
•. as soon as he knows that he values his partner extensively, john has the talk with them — the "what will we do if either of us goes first" talk. he makes sure that they both know the boundaries that come after death, how one would cope, if they'd want the other to move on or not. it's a cruel conversation, yet one that has to be discussed in his eyes.
•. during his relationship, duty still comes before his partner. i mean, he has literally devoted his entire life to the UNSC; it won't stop just because he's got someone under his arm. he isn't exactly stern about it, but he expects his partner to understand.
•. moreover, before initiating the relationship to an "official" status, john sits down and makes sure that his partner is okay with everything that makes him. his work and the sacrifices that come with it, his being as a whole, his past experiences that may influence how he responds to human things (such as human connection, emotion, his overall behaviour), etc.
•. john is very honest with his partner. if he doesn't like something, he'll say it. if he's a fan of something, he'll let his partner know. he believes that transparency and communication is crucial to maintaining a relationship, especially with someone like himself.
•. pet names are... uncommon, to say the least. again, due to his lack of experience, the expressions feel heavy and awkward on his tongue at first, but he definitely grows to call his partner things like "dear", "my love", or even "hot stuff" in playfulness. these are reserved for privacy, however. when in public, he will simply call his partner by their name or a nickname.
•. pretty much the same goes for PDA. he's not a fan. as lovely as he can be to his partner when the two are in private, john doesn't feel very comfortable expressing affectionate gestures in public. things like hugs, kisses, or inappropriate groping are off the table. however, he will pat his partner's back or shoulder or ruffle their hair, just not anything that he deems as "including the people around them in their relationship".
•. love language is definitely quality time, and adventurous quality time, at that. john loves spending time with his partner, even if the two are doing something as dull as reading, or eating dinner together, or just sitting silently beside each other (i coined this as "silently basking in each other". it's copyrighted by me. if you've seen anyone use this term before, please refer them to my lawyer... 😌). whenever, or, most likely, if ever, john and his partner go on a vacation, he prefers to spend this time with them exploring colonised areas, or going hiking and spending time out in the nature, or going to museums. since he hasn't ever really gotten to experience domesticity like this, he wants his first real adventures to be with his partner.
•. keeps a photo of his partner downloaded in the chip in his helmet. oh yeah. when cortana was still with him, she had gotten used to frequently pulling up that little picture of his partner while he was on a pelican ride, going to or fro.
•. helmet kisses. lots of 'em.
•. definitely not a loud relationship type of guy. he never really explicity makes it clear he's even seeing someone unless it comes up in a conversation or someone hits on him. hus business is his own. 🤷♀️ in addition, if he and his partner ever break up, he doesn't make a big deal out of it either.
•. definitely asked cortana for advice in the early stages of the relationship. this is, of course, only relevant if he had a relationship when cortana was around. if not, it was the other members of blue team. 🙃
•. when he makes a promise to his partner, he means it. that's why he never promises to come back when he leaves for missions, but he does make a damn good effort to return.

i'm so basic with romance when it comes to halo, honestly! i've yet to look into the side characters further and study their relationships, dynamics, etc, so i think there's a lot of potential for great shipping, but i just haven't found it yet! 😹 but as soon as i do, i will be quick to report on it, hehe...
as for otp, i have to say halsey and keyes; not only due to miranda, but moreover because i thought they were so cute in the fall of reach novel — i knew i was going to love them right away, before i even knew they had a daughter together!!! 💗💗💗
my notp in the halo universe, and i'm so sorry to disappoint, would have to be chief and cortana. it's not at all because i hate them, and i really don't mind seeing others ship them, i think it's so cute and precious, and if people like it, they should definitely continue! c: i just honestly can't ever see myself shipping them romantically SERIOUSLY. however, i'm extremely fond of their platonic relationship. it's really strong and powerful, and i think it's great representation to show that friends aren't only people you can occassionally talk to, but people you can trust with your whole soul (regarding chief and cortana's case). especially due to them being a male-female relationship, i feel like slapping the "couple" label on them and moving on just because of their genders erases the meaning from their whole bond completely; i'm frankly a little sick of seeing a man and woman be a power-couple in a video game instead of a power-friendship 😿 (closely related to laswell and price! they are just the sweetest c:).

I'm what ways is Jack like his father? Any way that he's unexpectedly different?
jack was as reckless as john in his younger years — he was always moving, always making trouble, and always looking for ways to adapt in new situations. growing older, jack began to show the same unwavering determination of his father when it came to training and learning. he earned his love for culture and the sciences from his mother, however, and spends most of his free time (if he's not at the gym!) reading about history, religion, inter-galactic and international traditions, and solving complicated or new maths problems with his tutor (/mother's personal AI). his current fixation are the sangheili :D
so, to put it simply, jack has the drive of his father and the sentiment and curiousity of his mother. like both of his parents, jack has grown into an empath with a deep appreciation far all things: big and small! 💗💗💗
