hello! i’m writing an essay about the beatles and i was wondering where you get your sources from. sources on how john met yoko and how toxic that relationship actually was yknow in that nature. i think you’ve also posted once john saying he believes everyone is born bisexual, and then yoko almost confirming that he was bi? i would really like to include these things, thanks!
ok, let’s start form the beginning.
1 - how john met yoko: the day before her exhibition “Unfinished Paintings And Objects” at the Indica Gallery in Mayfair, London. The Indica Gallery was supported by Paul McCartney, and he frequently invited John to the exhibitions. Where can you find the source: basically every book about The Beatles tells this story, also John told this story in one of his last interview to David Sheff, you can easily find the interview online and copy the whole story in details, if you need.
[about their first meeting, Cynthia Powell, in her book recounts that Yoko also met John several weeks before the Indica Gallery. You can decide to add her story or not, it’s up to you. I trust Cynthia because I believe she’s a reliable source, but since she was John’s ex-wife, it can be considered not an ‘objective’ story, but just ‘her opinion’, I’ll report what she wrote in her book:
She wrote that John was essentially forced to stay with Yoko after she had been stalking him for months from 1966 with several blackmails (”i’ll kill myself if you don’t help my son”), getting into his car when Cynthia was with him and Julian, and entered into his house when Cynthia wasn’t home, getting into his bed.Also Cynthia underlines that John wasn’t allowed to see his son Julian, neither Mimi. She didn’t let him fly to England.Same goes with John’s friends from the ‘past’: obviously Paul, but also Mick Jagger, for example, that wasn’t allowed to call/talk to John, and John suffered for this a lot. ]
2 - how toxic that relationship actually was: I never said that John and Yoko had a toxic relationship, I talked frequently about some unhealthy habits they both had, and specifically:
2a:How John’s heroin addiction affected his relationship with the Beatles and most importantly, with Paul. I wrote an article here. John was introduced to heroin by Yoko, and they both had serious problems with it. In the article I linked to you you’ll also find other posts I made about the same matter.
2b: When John started his solo years (1970) he began to deal with his childhood traumas with the primal screaming therapy that sadly wasn’t helpful at all, instead it was kinda harmful.during that time it was considered innovative, only years later doctors will realise it can worsen the traumas. This therapy wasn’t healthy for both John and Yoko.
2c. He started another therapy with Yoko after Sean’s birth: a drastic diet that caused him to lose a shocking amount of weight, the Macrobiotic diet. It’s hard to follow, but it can be healthy and it’s also connected to psychology and mental health. John loved to cleanse his body and do lot of yoga or medidate. There was a song on [Double Fantasy] called “Cleanup Time” that was about really cleaning yourself up, no drugs, no alcohol.This habit is healthy but the drastic changes he did, going from heavy drugs to extreme diet (like the macrobiotic one) wasn’t healthy at all. He needed balance.
3. John’s confessing everyone’s bisexual: it’s a Yoko’s interview in which she said John had a desire to sleep with men, and she also added:
“Ono, in her new interview, said she and Lennon had long conversations about bisexuality in which he said he believed everyone is likely bisexual - but is inhibited from exploring it because of society.‘So we are hiding the other side of ourselves, which is less acceptable,’ Ono said.[..]Ono said she doesn’t believe Lennon ever had sex with a man - but likely wanted to. 'No, I don’t think so,’ Ono told The Daily Beast. 'I think he had a desire to, but I think he was too inhibited.'The beginning of the year he was killed, he said to me, “I could have done it, but I can’t because I just never found somebody that was that attractive.”'Both John and I were into attractiveness - you know - beauty.’(whole article here)
