One of the many rewarding things about working on Treasure Planet was being able to work with master animator, Glen Keane. Besides animating Silver, Glen did some storyboard work on the film. Here’s  a couple of his story sketches. Love his loose pen work on these.

My eye goes right to the face, and Jim’s eyes in both of these drawings.

These two Glen Keane story drawings from Treasure Planet are great examples of Detail and Scale. 2 things to keep in mind while storyboarding.

First, Detail. It’s important not to over render a story drawing UNLESS the detail is supporting the story. In these drawings from the I’m Still Here song, Silver is giving Jim a LOT of work to do as part of being a cabin boy. He’s keeping Hawkins busy. Here Jim has to scrape the space barnacles from the ship and when we pull back to the second drawing we see how enormous the task is. The Detail in these drawings illustrate how hard this job is going to be. And how many barnacles there are.

The second drawing is all about Scale. It easy to draw story panels in medium close-ups, so this is a good reminder to pull the camera back from time to time. It gives you scale AND it helps orientate the viewer.
