i find that first image so telling about their relationship - they were always looking at each other, and at the least always touching one another - not in the intimate sense but rather holding hands, hugging, and even just playful roughhousing.
it's clear that they valued their physical bond and i suspect they were more comfortable with it in private.
"'We do need each other a lot. When we used to meet again after an interval we always used to be embarrassed about touching each other. We'd do an elaborate hand shake, just to hide the embarrassment. Or we did mad dances. Then we got to hugging each other. Now we do the Buddhist bit... arms around. It's just saying hello, that's all." (John Lennon, 1968)
"I remember sort of seeing [John] and he comes in and gives me a hug and says 'touching is good.' I'll never forget that. Touching is good. So I do a lot of hugging now." (Paul McCartney)
"I was thinking the other day, ‘I wish I had sat and just hugged John all the time when we were together. (…) I’d just sit around and hug him forever. That’s the depth of my feeling for him." (Paul McCartney, 2020)
