Uhhhhh so I watched ATLA as a youth while it was airing and I remember being vaguely disappointed with the finale. I recall thinking that it was a pretty good show and that kata.ang was boring but inevitable, but I never felt the need to watch it again...

Until now! I rewatched it with a group of friends recently and I have so many thoughts! Especially as an adult who now possesses media literacy, who has had some of my own writing published in multiple industries, who has worked in bookselling and talked to so many writers of books and TV and movies about their craft, who is friends with professional editors and published authors...but I'm also annoying the crap out of my friends and loved ones talking about it. So now for all our sake I'm here to spout opinions into the ether or whatever and also read the opinions of others because this seems like the right forum for that

Hopefully I've lurked enough to pick up on some basic etiquette, like misspelling specific words/phrases so they don't show up in searches, but let me know if I'm missing something I guess

Sheesh, first of all, the show is like 80-85% pretty darn great, perhaps even some of the best writing and storytelling and animation that you're going to find in western animation or western children's media or however you want to assign laurels to it. And then the other 15-20% is out-of-left-field hamfisted out-of-character poor writing choices that actively undermine the rest of the story...and that weird/bad 15-20% seems like it's mostly in service of making sure Katara and A.ang end up together

Also (since I was never aware of online discourse or active in any fandom as a kid) I've learned things since that rewatch (re:Bryke) in the last couple of months that stole my peace and ruined my joy

Anyways, I started that rewatch with the mildest of Zutara leanings and an open heart, and ended a fully radicalized Zutarian ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
