You know what is interesting? That moment when you feel embarrassed about yourself. So I spent like two whole weeks on designing my personal artist website. I thought it was the shit and I was really proud of myself when I finished it yesterday. But then, I went and see how other artists design their web pages. That moment… All of their pages looked so good! And here I went and thought that my page was the shit, but it turns out that it was not…
Victo Ngai is an illustrator for american medias. He have done quite alot of professional artworks for the New York Times and such franchises like McDonalds. And being the professional that he is, he knows how to present himself online too. His website and tumblr shows that he’s got what it takes to make it in this business.
His website, is his online portfolio. It is where he show all his works all in one place. If you were to go to his page, you can see that it is very clean and very organized. Instead of putting tabs on the left side of the page or on the right side of the page, he just used tumbnails that sums up/highlights each individual works in his career. Keeping it simple as it is, he provides the audience a better experience of browsing through his website.
I know from experience that using thumbnails is really great because it makes the viewer want to click on the thumbnail to see what the actual full image would look like. And once you click on an image, it navigates you towards where you can see the image in full high quality with descriptions to go with them. And because it's so easy to navigate, you can always press the ‘Backspace’ key to take you back to the main page. Having such an easy experience with his page made me feel at ease and it makes it seem like it is not a lot of work to navigate through someone’s collection of works. And that is very important when you are promoting youself on the web. And to top it off, he even includes his process on getting to the final stage.
Not only does he have a presence on his own website, he also has a presence on tumblr and twitter. On his twitter account, he’d makes tweets about his day or what ever he finds humourous in his life. Examples of his posts would be "Going to see lion king the musical with my mom and dad". Doing posts like that shows that he is a human and he does have a life other than his career. He does posts every now and then. But enough to know show to his audience that he actually does exist. The tone he uses on his tweets are very good because it shows humor in his characteristic and a sense of professionalim.
