Meema’s Watch! Like many kids I collected baseball cards. I also collected stamps, coins, pens and yo-yos. I discovered watches when I was about 11 or 12 years old after traveling with my dad to Duluth Minnesota. On our trip we visited my great grandmother who we called “Meema.” The name Meema came from my dad not being able to pronounce grandma as a child. While sitting in my great grandmothers living room it was as if I had taken a trip back in time where I saw some items that included books, lamps and furniture. Pointing to this plastic dome on the bookshelf near the chair where Meema was sitting I asked “what is that?”She gestured to me and said “bring it here!” I brought it over, she lifted the dome from the wooden base and took out a pocket watch that was hanging inside. She then started winding it! I could hear some clicking from the gears and the mainspring tightening, she shook it a little, handed it to me and said "you can have it, it was my fathers." She also said “don’t open it and dont take it apart!” Being a mischievous, curious little kid who didn’t really listen to anybody, I opened it! I wanted to know how it worked and figured out how to open it by unscrewing the back. What excited me most was the moving parts and the sparkle of the red jewels inside. The beating of the hairspring was fascinating to me, and the ticking of the watch was music to my ears! This was the most valuable and oldest thing I ever had. It was an Elgin from 1885. The visit to my great grandmother’s house started my journey into the world of watches. Meema lived to be 99 years old and her memory will live on forever along with the story about the Elgin pocket watch that will always be the most cherished timepiece in my collection!
