Art Pepper was a renowned American alto saxophonist born on September 1, 1925, in Gardena, California. A key figure in West Coast jazz, he rose to fame with Stan Kenton's orchestra in the 1940s and 1950s, despite heroin addiction and multiple prison terms disrupting his career. He died on June 15, 1982, leaving a legacy of emotive improvisations.

Foley died on February 1, 1989, in Austin, shot by the son of a friend during a confrontation over stolen checks; the shooter was acquitted.
