How To Use Sketchup

SKETCHUP

SketchUp is a three-dimensional software formerly known as Google SketchUp. It is used to create, edit extensive models for user convenience. It extends users to access numerous shapes in accordance with their particular areas. It has the ability to change any flat surface into a three-dimensional realistic thing. The method employed by the Sketchup software is the

‘Push and Pull’ method. This allows the user to pull a certain edge of the model and create the desired flexibility in it.

How to use Sketchup

Once you have downloaded the Sketchup app on desktop and created a Trimble ID, you are ready to go on a Sketchup ride!

I’ll be explaining the free version of Sketchup on the web:

Suppose, you are encountered with John when you open Sketchup. John enjoys long strolls, in the fields, basketball, and other sports. You can remove John or just let him hang there.

The toolbar on the left contains a pencil, the arc, and squares. These are used to make sketch lines, make circles and draw squares respectively.         

If you are not in a mood to draw, head over to the Warehouse and import a shape you desire. This is by clicking on the right-handed toolbar. Click the ‘options’ button and click the warehouse option at the top. Type the thing you want in the search bar.

If you already have a model saved in your computer, drag it inside the Sketchup drawing board. The image loads according to the size of it.

Click on the top option calling ‘Export’. Choose the format you wish, either ‘PNG’ or ‘STL’.

Some basic tools of the Sketchup:

The ‘Select’ makes you highlight an item

The ‘Erase’ helps you remove and highlight and item

The ‘Paint Bucket’ makes you fill an item’s surface with the color of your choice

The ‘Draw Lines’ helps you click and drag a straight line

The ‘Draw Shapes’ helps you draw a specific shape

The ‘modify objects’ helps one to change the model’s surface by dragging and clicking

The ‘measure tools’ help measure sizes and dimensions

The ‘walk’ helps one analyze the creation from eye level

The ‘camera controls’ helps you to alter the camera’s settings for different views

The status bar performs the following functions:

Undo, removes the recently done action

Redo, does the recently done action

Helps open a window which helps to troubleshoot

Language helps change the screen language

     11.  Find your current project’s measurement:

    At the lower right side of the page, you will see a set of dimensions.

Save your project: 

Select ‘Save’ from the upper left corner of the page

Enter a name to the project

Choose Trimble to connect from the left side

Click on the Sketchup folder to save it.

HOW TO RENDER IN SKETCHUP

SketchUp is one of the most vital and strong tools which one needs while editing and creating projects that involve 3D designing. One of the simplest and most accurate techniques is ‘The Photographer Method’ which is in short a mental model. The Photographer Method:

It enables the student from knowing absolutely nothing to being able to render on the job. It is the focus on the mental model of how a photographer thinks. For instance, Imagine you are a photographer and been hired to take three beautiful photographs of a room.

So imagine you are photographing something in Sketchup  instead of a camera. Which includes three parts;

Your rendering extension gives you all the gear you need. This includes cameras and lights. No matter which one you choose.

They all come up with cameras that have settings. Some of which are simplified and automated settings like the camera on your phone. Some give you more details settings or professional settings like a DSLR.

They also let you add or configure lights. Likewise, some give the basic options and some give detailed options.

In the photographer method you can get great rendering through any extension.

Great Lighting:

One of the great part of the photography method is setting up of the great lighting.

Think like a real-world photographer and use 2-Point Lighting to light your shoot;

 2-POINT LIGHTING:

      i.   Setting up a camera angle using the navigation tools.

     ii.   Hide and show layers to figure out what looks good. Once    you like what you see, remember to save the scene to lock everything in.

     iii.  Add a key lighting (main light). This will provide primary lighting and shadows you want to see. Sometimes your key lighting is the sunlight. When sun is your key light you can use Sketchup’s geo location and then use shadow’s dialogue to set the position of the sun and the clouds. Then dial in the final rendering settings in your extension. 

In some other cases your key light in an artificial light. With the role of thumb point the key lighting above the camera.

       iv.  Balance your camera exposure to key Light. Remember your key extension is like your camera. 

You need to adjust your camera’s exposure relevant to the key light. Beware! It is a common mistake to skip the exposure section. So they end up wasting a lot of times. Add a secondary fill light. This light should fill up everything that is very dark to enhance important details. Try adjusting the secondary light ninety angles to the key light with your camera between the two lights. 

 Once the secondary light is added you will need to repeatedly adjust the exposures and colors.  Since your camera is focused to key light you first need make adjustments to the secondary light. The secondary light should be softer than the fill light. 

Of course! Some projects might need more lights too. Like in a real world the photographer will click the photo once the light is adjusted, in Sketchup you need to click the render button.  Once you do, you are ready for the final piece on finishing through Photoshop.

Finishing through Photo Shop:

In the real world, photographer does not get photos just by clicking them. They need to edit through photo shops. It is like adding enhancement to it.

You don’t need a photo shop expert to do so. 

3 recipes to quickly improve renderings:

      i.  Use Levels Adjustment Layer to enhance brightness, contrast and tone by opening the image in phot shop. Add levels of adjustments. In the property window select ‘auto options’. Let photo shop adjust colors, contrast and enhancements. You can also make manual adjustments. Sliders underneath the histogram. 

       ii.  Add Hue/ Saturation Adjustment Layer to change the mood of the shot. From the hue and saturation panel slide the arrow to add richer or duller looks according to your demand on your image. 

      iii.  Paint lighting with the Brush Tool. With your image open in photo shop add a blank image to it. Set your layer blend mode to ‘screen’. Then select the brush tool, give it opacity of 15%, then pick a brush sixe slightly bigger than the light source. Click on the light source and you will see a subtle glow. HOW TO MAKE A CIRCLE FROM SKETCHUP

Sketchup:  

Is a 3 Dimensional computer modeling software program for a vast range of drawing applications owned by Trimble Inc. It is employed in architecture, designing, engineering and creating film and videos. 

It has a wider range of models including a strong database to download existing models or create new ones.  The software works on the basis of ‘Push and Pull’ method. This method allows designers to add and cut, push and pull details for satisfying their model needs. The software also has drawing layout feature, surface rendering, and allows third-party plugins from the Extension Warehouse.

HOW TO MAKE A CIRCLE FROM SKETCHUP:

In Sketchup, you can draw rectangles, polygon, squares through the shape tools. These tools ‘Getting Started toolbar, the Drawing toolbar, and the Large Tool Set toolbar.

Things you should know before drawing a circle:

Circle connect certain line segments about a specific radius.

A single line is created from the line segments in that a defined edge and  divided face is achieved.

Selecting one segment is like selecting the whole circle.

The segment in the circle is seen by Sketchup’s search engine.

An endpoint and mid-point interference is seen if the mouse is hovered    about the circumference of the circle.

Following are the steps involved to get a perfect circle in Sketchup:

1.   In the toolbar, next to rectangle is a ‘Circle’ shape in the drop down menu. Pressing the ‘C’ key is also the same. A pencil appears in place of the cursor. The measurement table displays the default number of sides that is 24. The number of sides can be changed according to the will of the user.

2.   Select were you wishing to make the center point of the circle. The arrow key that is corresponding your chosen alignment has an arrow key. Press that arrow key to align the plane of your circle with a geometry or special alignment drawing axis.

3.   The measurement table changes to display the circle’s radius.

4.   Moving the cursor out from the center point shows the circle’s radius. The radius value is displayed dynamically in the Measurements box as you move the cursor. Press Esc at if you wish to start at any time over.

5.   (Optional) Until you select a new tool or draw a new circle, Measurements box can be used to change the radius of the circle or the number of sides. As following:

To change the number of sides: use ‘S’ to change the number of sides. For example 4 sides can be written as 4S. Then press Enter. Alternatively, you can also press CTRL key. Typing a number and a unit (if desired) to change the radius, such as 6”, 8’, 34cm, or 7m. Then press Enter or Return.

 How to draw an ellipse or oval:

Use a circle tool to draw a circle.

Choose the Scale tool.

Select the circle. The circle is surrounded by a bounding box consisting of eight green grips.
