@jokerslaw
Hello again. I am Lin-Manuel. I play the recorder when I am nervous.
*screams for a million years*
Watch: Emma Watson and Lin-Manuel Miranda team up for a feminist freestyle â and itâs amazing.
who lives, who dies, who tells your story
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven- *gun shot*
TEN! HE SAID TEN! FUCK YOU, EACKER.
I may not live to see our glory, But I will gladly join the fightÂ
And when our children tell our story. Theyâll tell the story of tonightÂ
Wrote everything down far as I could see
who lives, who dies, who tells your story?
Look at where you are, look at where you started⊠We know we donât deserve you, @linmanuel Just make us proud, that would be enough
Renée Elise Goldsberry on Angelica Schuyler (x)
I have seen people say that one of the tragedies of âThe World Was Wide Enoughâ is that Hamilton and Burr both break with their naturesâBurr doesnât wait and Hamilton throws away his shot. This is perfectly, literally true, as well as excellent wordplay in the second instance, but Iâve been thinking that one of the really beautiful things about the musical is that itâs not completely true.
Hamilton throws away his (gun)shot, but thatâs neverâin his own mind or in the play itselfâbeen what the metaphorical shot really is, at least not consistently. âNot throwing away your shotâ is about not wasting your opportunities; itâs about making the deliberate choice. Hamilton throws away his more active military career when he signs on as Washingtonâs aide, but he views thisâat least in the momentâas seizing his shot, because Washington has persuaded him that itâs harder and more honorable to try to live. He and his men take the bullets out of their guns at Yorktown to better secure their victory.
And itâs not only Hamilton who wins by losing, or at least by forfeiting the showier and more conventional route to victory: itâs Washington, too. LMM is explicit about this in the notes on âOne Last Timeâ: that the song highlights Washingtonâs âmost radical act/lasting legacy,â which is his decision to walk away from power and not seek it again. He throws away the most obvious form of power, but he doesnât throw away his chance for meaningful action: he just redefines what meaningful action looks like. Even though Hamilton says it will make him look weak, Washington pushes through, because âthey will see weâre strong.â He turns down one shot for another: he teaches a country, and a succession of presidents, and Hamilton himself, to say goodbye.
And thatâs what Hamilton learns from him, and from Eliza, who choosesâconsciously and activelyâto forgive. He says, âIf I throw away my shot, is this how youâll remember me? What if this bullet is my legacy?â And it is, and he knows that, and he chooses this chance, this idea of meaningful action: to aim at the sky. To not kill, or even feign to kill, â[his] first friend, [his] enemy.â And we donât say heâs weak for that; we see heâs strong.
Because kindness, in Hamilton, is always deserving of our awe and respect. Hamiltonâs ânon-stopâ series of accomplishments is wonderful to behold, but the one thing weâre really asked if we can even imagine is Eliza offering him forgiveness. When Hamilton chooses to aim for the sky, he doesnât throw away his shot, he takes stock of everyone heâs loved, and everyone heâs lost, and everything heâs done, and seizes the opportunityâto be kind. To make peace.
And for us, at least, thatâs a substantial part of his legacy. So part of what makes Hamilton so awesome, for me, is that it recognizes that sometimes deliberately refraining from action is the most powerful action you can take, and it defines its characters by those active refusals, those conscious choices to not go after more. Hamilton throws away his shot, Eliza throws away her anger, Angelica throws away her chance, Washington throws away his reelection. Principle is sometimes most meaningfully expressed by where we draw the line and what we refuse to do, which is why Hamilton cannot back Burr after hearing that thereâs ânothing [he] wouldnât do.â
Hamilton never really gives up. As Burr says in âWait for It,â all he does is âchange the game.â
These things, too, are part of taking your shot: you take the opportunity to be better, smarter, kinder. Hey, sometimes you âtake the bullets out your gunâ and thatâs part of how you win the war.
Things you don't hear in the cast recording
-Phillipaâs scream when Phillip dies (itâs fine my heart just cracked) - Jonathan Groffâs insanely funny, bratty facial expressions - how involved the ensemble is in the scenes -Lin Manuelâs voice cracking at âcall me son one more timeâ -Andrew Chapelle. - Laurens holding Hamiltonâs head to his after âLaurens- do not throw away your shotâ - Jeffersonâs mic drop after Cabinet Battle no. 1 -Hamilton going to kiss Angelicaâs hand during the Reynolds Pamphlet âsomeone who understands what Iâm struggling here to doâ -Angelica yanking her hand away at âIâm not here for youâ -the cast rotating around Hamilton in slow motion doing ballet during Eye of the Hurricane -Leslie Odom Jr wiping away tears during The World Was Wide Enough
burrâs literally always smiling or looking as if heâs trying to smile, even when heâs exasperated or disagreeing with hamilton, even when heâs hurt or frustrated and i can totally see why ham âwill never understand himâ
everytime the schuyler sisters are together, theyâre either holding hands or touching in some way like the line âlike i said youâre free to goâ, eliza takes peggyâs face in her hands and kisses her nose itâs absolutely adorable
jonathan groff taking every chance he can to get the others to break itâs so funny when leslie sees him taking a seat to watch after âi know himâ and trying not to crack at groff smiling his shit-eating grin
how absolutely cold and chilling washington is when he tells burr to close the door on his way out
ham pushing laf away to take his place when he tries to approach angelica in âwinterâs ballâ
ham doing a dorky victory dance shuffle thing in âhelplessâ when elizaâs father gives his blessing
how absolutely over-exaggeratedly loud and excited laurens is during his introduction of angelica in âsatisfiedâ that itâs almost obvious heâs hiding something
ham looking back briefly at angelica as he and eliza leave at the end of âsatisfiedâ
the transition from absolute rapture as he looks at philip to understanding then grief and denial as eliza reads him the letter that laurens was killed in action (which i thought was a nice little meta transition as well since laurens/philip are both played by anthony)
eliza:Â âalexander, are you all right?â ham: *looking at laurens in the afterlife like a man who had his life sucked out from him*Â âi have so much work to do.â
jeff showing off to a confused and disappointed philip a copy of the reynolds pamphletÂ
eliza wrenching herself away as if burned when ham tries to hold her hand after philip dies
ham never looking away from eliza in âitâs quiet uptownâ, trying to get through to her and eliza just staring ahead, trying to be angry and failing when sheâs so absolutely tired and grieved. hamâs absolutely wrecked face when she finally holds his hand. literally he cries so unabashedly like a little child and eliza hugs him to her, and her face does that thing where sheâs literally swallowing her feelings but the tears are already out as she finally cracks and joins in his grief.
eliza hugging ham from behind to tell him to go back to sleep and when sheâs about to leave, ham pulls her back to kiss her hand and tell her that sheâs the âbest of wives and best of womenâÂ
eliza holding her hand out to him, in between the bullet, as ham tells her to take her time
What Ham says: Sit down John, you fat mother f*cker!
What Ham means: An open letter to the fat, arrogant, anti-charismatic, national embarrassment known as âPresident John Adamsâ (sh*t). The manâs irrational. He claims that Iâm in league with Britain in some vast international intrigue?! Bitch, please! You wouldnât know what Iâm doing. Youâre always going berserk, but you never show up to work. Give my regards to Abigail next time you write about my lack of moral compass. At least I do my job up in this rumpus. That line is behind me; I crossed it again, while the president lost it again. Aw, such a rough life, better run, tell your wife that the boss is in Boston again. Let me ask you a question. Who sits at your desk when youâre in Massachusetts? They were calling you a dick back in â76 and you havenât done anything new since. Youâre a nuisance with no sense. Youâll die of irrelevance. Go ahead, you can call me the devil, you aspire to my level, you inspire to malevolence. Say hi to the Jeffersons! And spies all around me, maybe they can confirm. I donât care if I kill my career with this letter, Iâm confining you to one term. You fat mother f*cker!
A dot Ham, drawn in PS.
