(not promoting, but harm reduction is so so important!!)
1. Heart and pulse
• sit quietly for 1 min
• place 2 fingers on wrist/neck
• count your pulse for 30 sec and double it
• normal: 60-100 bpm
• danger zone: <50, >120 bpm or irregular/skipping beats
2. Blood pressure/dizziness
• stand up from sitting
• notice: do you get lightheaded, see black spots, feel like fainting?
• frequent dizziness/fainting = electrolyte or blood pressure crash
3. Swelling check
• press gently into your shin/ankle for 5 seconds - if a dent stays (pitting edema), your body is holding fluid from electrolyte imbalance
4. Muscle & nerves
• stretch your hand wide, then make a fist
• Notice: tingling, twitching, or cramping? That can signal low potassium or calcium.
5. Hydration & Urine
• check urine color (preferably your first pee of the day).
• Pale yellow = hydrated
• Dark yellow/amber = dehydrated
• Clear all the time = over- hydrated (can dilute electrolytes)
6. Emergency red flags (call for hospitalization!!)
• severe chest pain or irregular heartbeat
• Passing out or near fainting
• Extreme swelling in the face, hands, or legs
• Inability to keep fluids down
• Extreme shortness of breath
