When you see the word “oils” you may already have an idea of what I’m talking about. If you guessed essential oils, you would be correct. I am looking to truly introduce oils into my life with a lot more determination.
I have a son. Elliott Thomas is his name and he is a darling 6-month-old little blue eyed boy. Having Elliott in my life shifted my view on life.
I have been at work now for 3 months and Elliott has been at daycare or with the nanny 4 days a week. It’s been great to be back at work, but like many mothers around the world, I worry and I have a fragile heart towards my son. One of those things that really tugs at my heart strings is when he’s not feeling well. That’s the absolute worst. I remember when he was only a week old, I looked at him with tears in my eyes and thought to myself, “never get sick.. be well always, I will protect you!” But that’s just not realistic and I don’t want Elliott sheltered or in a bubble. I want him to jump in rain puddles, running as fast as his feet can carry him and all the things a kid his age needs to do in order to test his limits and express his inner being.
I have been intrigued with essential oils for years and use them in my personal practice. I have used them for calming myself down (Stress Away & Joy), upset stomach (Peppermint & Lavender), treating a cough or cold (Thieves), helping with sleep (Valor), soothing sore muscles (Panaway), diffusing oils in the air to freshen my home (Tea Tree & Lemon), cleaning my home (Thieves) and sharing oils that work for me with friends and family.
When Elliott has come home with a frown of discomfort it breaks my heart and it makes me want to make it all better. As some may know, when they are this little, there are very little you can do to help them. Tylenol and now Ibuprofen (since you have to be 6 months to take it) he can take but that’s the extent of it. I am proud so say that with a little research and consulting with our pediatrician I was able to make an essential oil vapor rub for infants. The purpose of this rub was not to cure his ailments but to help build up his immune system.
Homemade Vapor Rub for Infants:
+1/2 cup olive oil, coconut oil or avocado oil
+ 4 drops of Eucalyptus oil
+ 4 drops of Balsam Fir oil
I checked with my pediatrician and she said this is totally safe (especially because it was diluted so much) to avoid this mixture from going into his mouth, try rubbing the Vapor Rub on his feet covered with socks while he sleeps. Apparently it’s effective on his feet because the rub dilates the blood vessels in the feet causing reflexes that soothe the cough.
*NOTE: Diluting the oils for infants is so important to avoid irritation or sensitization especially for babies. A carrier oil like olive oil, coconut oil or avocado oil works great and stretches the life of your precious oils.
I also tried this remedy from Mama Mika “The Armpit Smell Method” or a safe remedy for helping the baby sleep soundly while he/she is fighting a cold. She called it The Armpit Smell Method because after 12 hours the little concoction smells pretty funky.
Infant Remedy for Cold/Congestion:
+ Crushed shallots
+ Pour some Eucalyptus oil over the shallots
* Leave on a plate in baby’s room while he/she is sleeping
I am determined to use essential oils to help my little one more naturally. And yes I will still use Tylenol, Ibuprofen and antibiotics that the pediatrician prescribes because medicine is incredible and I am no doctor here. However I do feel empowered to make environmental changes in our home to comfort my husband my son and myself as well as helping boost Elliott’s immune system. I also think these incredible oils can help in a natural way. There are so many chemicals that are on the market and I know that if we can change what we use in our home that’s a good step forward.
Starting in July I will be officially replacing all my chemical cleaning products with a dear friend, Ashley, I call her my Spirit Mama. We will be going through all the cleaning products under my sink and purging and replacing with a cleaner alternative called “ Thieves® Household Cleaner” for deep cleaning, scrubbing, degreasing, spot cleaning, dusting and more. There are dozens of cleaning product alternatives that are all Young Living’s Thieves essential oil blend. This blend contains Lemon, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata and Rosemary.
More to come soon, I will be documenting this conversation with Ashley and hopefully help inform other mamas, papas and individuals that want to do a similar purge.
