Cirque du Soleil: Kooza review
Kooza changed the trajectory of my entire life in April 2008. I can point to no other singular event that has had such undeniable direct impact on me. It gave me flying trapeze, which in turn gave me boundless passion, remarkable trust, countless friendships, and a list of extraordinary sights and experiences far too long to catalog. After thirteen years since last seeing Kooza, three years since my last Grand Chapiteau show, and over two years since seeing any Cirque at all (probably my longest time away from this company in a decade), I had the pleasure reuniting with this show in its home city.
But Kooza also gave me perspective. I’ve seen so much since then, and when I reflect on Saturday’s show, the best comparison I can draw is the feeling of driving past your childhood home and finding it just a little bit smaller than you remember. Maybe you spent so many hours playing on the tire swing out front that you didn’t notice the chips in the siding. Maybe you spent so many summer nights catching fireflies that you forgot how drafty the living room windows were in the winter. Little things like that, all of them easily outshone by happy memories and love. But as an adult you notice those details, and even if I (I am not exaggerating) wept through the reveal of the bataclan, I wasn’t blind to the handful of flaws that made the show fall just short of what I remembered and treasured. In a way the best part was standing outside the tent before the show began, because then it was absolutely perfect. It was still out of reach. Inside it was exactly what it is: a live show full of passionate human beings doing their best for their audience. I adore them for that. And I will always, always adore Kooza. What follows is an honest (and I promise overall extremely positive!) act by act of the show, chipped siding and all.
Short version: see Kooza, have your life changed. That’s my personal guarantee, anyway.

We've had a terrible week (nothing really serious, just adult life) so just wanted to chill out a bit.
Also wanted to draw Chief Archer's Daughter barefoot, dunno why.
We don´t usually redraw our art, but sometimes you know something is off and you just can´t stop thinking of it, until you actually do something to fix it.
Besides, we needed some positive, cheerful fluff.

Oh god I can't stop looking at this. The brightness, the smoothness, her hair, her shoulders. This is so adorable and so worth the effort ❤️🖤❤️🖤
Happy International Women's Day! Had this pic around for a while and finally found the time to finish it! What a better way to celebrate this day that drawing brave, strong women?
FUCK. YES. My faves!!!!! I adore this, fantastic work.
Some disheartening news today: Violaine Corradi, composer for Varekai, Dralion, and Zaia, has passed away at the age of 63. Her music had a distinctive blend of percussive world beats, light woodwinds, keening strings, classic CdS accordion, and some of the most iconic vocal harmonies in Cirque history. If you'd like to reflect on her musical contributions to the world, here are some recommendations:
Ombra, Dralion, a gentle, yearning lullaby that's leant its lyrics to this blog's title for more than ten years.
Vocea, Varekai, recognized by many long before they even saw the show and indisputably one of "Le Best de Cirque du Soleil."
Patzivota, Varekai, an interlude with the complexity that embodies the detail she put into her work. A personal favorite of mine. Female vocals by Violaine's sister Isabelle, who filled the role of The Muse for over a decade.
Caelestis, Zaia, a sparkling example of the mystical atmospheres she created.
Kèro Hiréyo, Varekai. Bright. Beautiful. Perfect. I don't know what to say except that I'm actually struggling to listen to this one right now: I have loved it for so, so long. This song and act are everything that is right about Cirque du Soleil. I'm just grateful to have had it. I hope you enjoy it too.
Thank you for everything, Violaine. Your work will be remembered in the rallying cry of Varekai's creation:
"Emotion, emotion, and emotion."
Happy Valentine's Day!
Because we can't stay long without drawing these two dorks.

Here's our humble tribute to this amazing show! Hope to see you in Vegas someday! ❤ Break a leg today, or as we say in Spain, ¡MUCHA MIERDA! ❤
I can't believe it's real. It's back. This show has given me so, so much and somehow, despite every conceivable setback, it continues to give yet more. I'm so grateful and thrilled for everyone involved.
WELCOME BACK, KA ❤️🧡💛🖤
