Everyone keeps saying it makes no sense that Harry, who hated his fame, ended up with Ginny, who had a crush on him because of his fame. But that's ... not true. Ginny had a crush on just Harry, not the boy who lived. She knew Harry hated his fame. Remember the first time Ginny spoke in front of Harry after Malfoy mocked his fame? 'Leave him alone, he didn't want all that!'

If anyone was obsessed with Harry because of his fame, it was Colin Creevey. Ginny's obsession with Harry was nothing like Colin's. She wasn't imposing, she never annoyed Harry, she left him alone. Harry was the one who used to reach out to her and tried to talk to her in the beginning. So yeah, the 'Harry never noticed Ginny' argument isn't true either. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Of course, I don’t speak for the hinny fandom and I’m sure there’s plenty of hinny shippers who are ambivalent towards or even like the chest monster!

I do like the idea that Harry is so unused to feeling so strongly towards someone that his initial reaction is wtf is this monster inside of me???

Ginny and Harry, two main characters

I find it really sad how overlooked is the rarity of Harry and Ginny's couple dynamic.

In stories like Harry Potter where the main character is clearly the main character and not just the person who gives us their point of view for the story, it's very common that the love interest isn't an equal to the hero. Usually, the love interest is one of the helpers of the main character which inevitably creates an unbalanced dynamic where a lot of the life experiences of the love interest revolve around the main character. Take Ron and Hermione, they are not equals to Harry. They are equals to each other, they are the only two people who know what it means to be Harry's best friend in the war but the stories/adventures they are involved in aren't theirs. They are not equals to Harry, which doesn't mean they are less or more, just something else.

Ginny on the other end is the only character between the young ones - besides Harry obviously - that is a main character in her own right. She has her own story, her own friends, her own adventures, her own giant trauma, and her own relationship with darkness. She has her own hero story with her leading the rebellion at Hogwarts and her own helpers, Neville and Luna.

She is a main character whose story we don't have the opportunity to read. And Harry is her love interest just as much as she is Harry's one. She may understand Harry perfectly and so be perfect for him, but Harry understands her perfectly too and therefore is the only logical love interest for her.

And even after the books she keeps being Harry's equal becoming famous in her own right with professional Quidditch and then assuming the most influential role in Wizarding World sport as editor of the sports section for the Prophet.

She even has her sort of prophecy with the whole being the first daughter in seven generations and the seventh sibling, something that supposedly makes her quite powerful, something that we see, something that even Slughorn, a man who knows pretty much all the people who are worth being known, recognizes.

To solidify this point, her story is circular like Harry's. If Harry starts this story as someone who needs to be rescued and who is in search of a family he ends it with him protecting other people for a job and having a loving family. Ginny starts her story as a young girl who as such has to hide her true ambitions, as someone who because she wrote in a diary faced unspeakable horrors, and she ends the story with being famous for her talent, the mother of a youngest sibling and girl that she'll make sure will grow up not needing to hide her ambitions and a journalist, reclaiming her passion for writing.

Harry and Ginny are basically two main characters with a lot of secondary characters in common who happened to find each other and get married. It's basically a cross-over between two stories it's just that we've read only one of the two.

Do you think that Harry and Ginny still have their different patronuses? The stag and horse? Or do you imagine one of them changing at some point in their future to match, like Lily/James or Tonks/Remus?

I think their patronuses stay as they are.

I don’t think you need to have the same patronuses to be soulmates (Snape and Lily have the most matching Patronuses in the whole series and it’s not because they’re soulmates).

A character’s patronus is a representation of who they are at their core. Ginny and Harry’s aren’t the same animal but they are complimentary both in terms of how they appear visually (big, four-legged, hooved animals) and what they represent.

Stags and Horses are both common symbols in heraldry (and what is a patronus if not your own personal coat of arms?). They’re both animals that are seen as symbols of leadership and power. Stags have an association with protection and Horses are affiliated with a free spirit.

To me, a stag fits Harry perfectly and a horse is the right fit for Ginny too. Their patronuses showcase the qualities that make them compatible while still allowing them their independence/individuality.

My favourite meta ever is @thegirlwhowrites642’s Harry and Ginny two main characters analysis and I want to shout it out here because I think it outlines perfectly why it would go against their characters and their dynamic for either of them to change patronus to match the other.

A horse and a stag are equally matched as are Ginny and Harry.

Hello! I came across your name on reddit, looked you up, and you’ve honestly made me fall in love with Hinny all over again! I’m genuinely curious, what makes you love them so much?

A lot of people claim Harry was only physically attracted to Ginny, that it was just lust and never would’ve lasted, but I completely disagree. I think people overlook the quiet friendship between them, how easy they are with each other, how natural they feel together even when they’re not “best friend” close. They relax around each other in a way that feels like they’ve known each other their whole lives. And their values line up so well. That’s a huge part of why they work. I’m a strong believer that when you share that kind of foundation with someone, similar priorities, similar worldview, and can have open and honest conversations with them it creates a relationship that’s actually strong at its core. I do wish we had more canon hinny, but as someone who’s fairly new to the hp fanfiction world I’m so glad you’re here!🫶🏼

Well, my one and only mission in life is to give hinny the flowers they deserve so this is very lovely to read 🥹🩷

I think trying to explain why I love hinny might be where my articulation fails me but I will try (beneath the cut because this is LONG):

First of all Brother’s Best Friend is just an excellent trope and they do it so well. Harry tearing himself apart because he doesn’t want to jeopardise his friendship with Ron (the person he would miss most in the world 🥹) but in the end it doesn’t matter because he simply cannot stay away from Ginny. That’s not lust, that’s the kind of love you can’t ignore even when it would be easier if you could. Chef’s kiss 🤌

And then there’s their dynamic. They just GET each other. They don’t need all these big overt moments on page, their relationship isn’t fraught with misunderstanding like Ron and Hermione (no hate to Romione, love them too). They have these secretive little looks before Ginny can even properly speak around Harry, because they just seek each other out. It’s instinctive.

Then we have the ‘I forgot’, ‘lucky you’ scene. Harry needs someone to call him on his bullshit, Ginny is there to do it. He forgets about her whole diary debacle, something that a lot of people might find hurtful, but all Ginny wants is to not be treated like a victim and Harry never does treat her like that. He says sorry, she accepts. Could these two ever hold a grudge against each other? No. It would kill them.

There’s the chocolate in the library scene that shows how well they read and trust each other and Ginny who’s been longing for Harry for years, is just fully ready to push that aside and give him advice about Cho because she thinks that will make him happy. Ginny Weasley, they could never make me hate you 😘

And can we just talk about ‘anything’s possible, if you’ve got enough nerve.’ - they are two halves of the same whole. They literallly share a brain cell.

And yeah, they do find each other hot but that’s a super important part of a relationship, especially for two restless, impulsive idiots (affectionate).

The way Harry thinks about Ginny — from the very start — is pure poetry (a few of my favourite examples):

She dived under the table to retrieve the bowl and emerged with her face glowing like the setting sun. - CoS

Ginny was curled like a cat on her chair, but her eyes were open; Harry could see them reflecting the firelight. - OotP

He felt a strange twinge of annoyance as she walked away, her long red hair dancing behind her. - HBP

Harry looked around; there was Ginny running towards him; she had a hard, blazing look in her face as she threw her arms around him. - HBP

Ginny gave Harry a radiant smile: he had forgotten, or had never fully appreciated, how beautiful she was, but he had never been less pleased to see her. - DH

^^^ this is not just lust. This is ‘she makes me want to write sonnets.’

And everything I’ve wrote above (and a million other things I’ve restrained myself from saying bc this getting long) is enough for me to ship them, but it’s not what makes them my OTP.

They both have incredibly hard starts in life. They’ve both had to deal with darkness most other people can’t imagine. They’ve both felt alone, and ignored, and neglected. AND THEN THEY FIND EACH OTHER.

There is no one in the world that deserves a happy ending as much as these two, and there’s no one else in the world who could give the other Happily Ever After. I just don’t know how you can be normal about that 🫠

At what point do you think Ginny realized she wanted to marry Harry? That moment when it just clicked and was I want to spend the rest of my life with this man, and vice versa.

For Harry we have the actual canon scene.

When you read the break-up scene, besides being a mutual I love you, it's pretty clear they are saying that they are it for each other. It doesn't seem though that Harry fully process the concept that he wants to marry Ginny until he realises he probably won't, so when Ron yells at him on his birthday.

As for Ginny, she is obviously extremely conscious of the fact that Harry is it for her, and I think she was since around the time she broke up with Dean/realised she still had feelings for Harry. If she was not over him by that point then she would never be. Harry is really the bane of her existence and the object of all her desires, and she knows it. Though, I don't think she would dare think about marrying Harry, she is in some ways far more conscious than Harry himself of how the war might end at the point of the break-up (Harry realises we probably won't marry Ginny only after his fight with Ron at the start of DH, showing that deep down he took for granted that they would get back together).

In conclusion, I believe Ginny would let herself think of marriage only after the war. If by chance you have read my story of how Harry and Ginny get back together, you know that I believe Harry and Ginny would be sort of left to take care of the Burrow by themselves and I think that situation of constant domesticity would allow Ginny to really think something along the lines of: "I want to clean dishes with this man by my side for the rest of my life". Or something on that level of sappiness.

Of course, one could talk about how this concept that they are it for each other would be even more reinforced in their minds by the year of the war and specifically a couple of experiences that happened during the battle. From Harry's last thought before dying to Ginny having to witness Harry's fake death. But Harry already repeatedly indicates Ginny as his family and home during the last book. They both know they are destined to love the other forever.

We could also get into how they would obviously become emotionally codependent after the war but overall it's unnecessary to answer this question.

The last thing I care to point out is that marriage would be something very important to them, not because they would need it to prove their love but because fundamentally, at the end of the day, they are two professional saps. Additionally, with the chaos their lives would be in after the war, being able to sort of "write in stone" this bond that represents a unique source of stability, comfort, and joy would probably become even more important.

As much as I may have enjoyed some funny short stories about them having a shotgun wedding, they would marry way sooner than James' arrival. It's also very strongly remarked in the books how much Harry values official bonds (also, come on, he is imagining her in a wedding dress at 17, he was probably checking out rings while Ginny was still at Hogwarts).

I’ve always liked Dean as a character, so it bugs me that fanfics paint him as this jealous, bitter obstacle to Hinny. I honestly think he’d be the opposite. When you see a couple that genuinely fits, it’s hard not to be happy for them, it actually makes it easier to move on because you realise that person was never meant for you. I feel like once Ginny broke up with him it was probably sort of a relief. It would be hard to be in a relationship where the party has always mentally checked out and moved on. Plus, Dean always seemed to genuinely like Harry and respect what he’d been through, of course it’s normal to feel jealous at first, but I think he moved on really fast too. I can totally see him rooting for Harry to have something good in his life, not resenting him for it.

In defence of Dean, I find it really hard to believe Ginny and Harry’s interactions in the latter part of HBP weren’t a little bit eyebrow raising even before the Dean/Ginny break up.

I’m not saying they cheated or were even consciously flirting, but I think they have an undertone to their secretive glances and their inside jokes that Dean, as Ginny’s boyfriend, probably found a little uncomfortable to witness.

So when, a few weeks after Dean and Ginny’s break up, she snogs Harry in the middle of the common room? Yeah, I don’t blame him for shattering that glass.

It’s one of those situations where you don’t want to be right and it’s really annoying that you are.

I agree though, he went through too much real shit in DH to care about petty teenage drama. I fully believe Dean remains friends with Harry and Ginny well into adulthood and their kids are all a little bit disgusted at the idea of Ginny and Dean ever dating 😂
