i did not do this to show how i am ‘lying’ to men or anyone, it’s not about how you, as a man, should feel about it - it’s about myself.

to me your statement sounds as if the left side of this picture is something awful or horrible. and no, it’s not. it is my face - with and without makeup. and whether i chose to wear it or not is MY AND JUST MY decision. and when i do, i do it for myself - so that i feel good about myself - not for you.

EVERYONE needs to know this. This is how nearly all abusive relationships play out, nearly all of the time. It’s very, very common and very important.

Bear in mind that “violent outbursts” can also mean mental/verbal abuse, shoving or holding someone down, throwing things at the person or threats.

Usually, this cycle worsens and worsens throughout the relationship. The violent episodes last longer and longer and the honeymoon phase gets shorter or may disappear completely, leaving the relationship bouncing back and forth between tension and explosions.

This is really important to know because most victims will see the Tension period as their abuser “trying to be better” for the longest time, and it can take years for them to understand that is a lie. By then, it’s usually too late.

I went through this cycle for two years. I know many more battered women ( and men! ) who have been in this sort of relationship for far, far longer. My mother was a battered woman.

Why wasn’t this taught to us in school? Why was relationship abuse education in the 90s and early 00s non-existant?
