Waiting-Up → Jo-Jo
Jo had been expected him to argue, to say he was tired and had worked all day. And she felt bad for it because she knew it was true. She knew that he was working a lot and hard and that he was tired, but if she let him get away now they would not talk again for God knows how long.
“I know you’re tired. I’m tired too. But you wouldn’t even know why, would you? It cannot wait, if it could I would wait,” she answered equally forceful and glared at him. “If I had called you you would have said that you have no time, because you are with a patient and busy and we should talk later and then you would have come home late, like now, and said that you are tired. You are so avoiding me and not just me.” She followed him towards the living room, she would not let him out of her sight and if she had to follow him into the bathroom she would too.
“Jonah you can’t keep doing this. You can’t push everyone away. I don’t even know what you think you’re accomplishing with it. And I know you hurt because of Victoria but I’m damn sure she wouldn’t want you like this. She wants you to be happy. I guess you probably think you’re protecting me and Ivy but all you’re doing is hurting us.”
She took a tentative step closer to him looking at him pleadingly. “Jonah, you have done so much for me. You took me in without knowing what you signed up for. You gave me a home, a chance and a future. You helped me when I got drugged and almost killed someone. And I know I sometimes annoy the hell out of you with my big mouth and my promiscuity but you still help me. You are my friend Jonah. But friendship isn’t a one way street. So please Jonah, talk to me. You being like this is really hurting me. And I don’t even want to start what it’s doing to Ivy.” She wasn’t sure what she should tell Jonah about Ivy. She didn’t want to betray her trust again by telling him about the psychiatrist but she had to make him see that whatever he was trying to do it wasn’t working.
Jonah managed to sit down and start to take off his shoes while she started pestering him. He leaned down to untie the dress shoes before pulling them off, using that motion to take a deep breath and let his eyes close. He really was not in the mood to have her ranting at him. But he listened, ignoring her mostly, as she went on. She was mostly right, he probably would have made some excuse not to talk to her, but he was doing this for her own good. There was no arguing it, and there was no getting around it. He wasn't going to back down from this.
He pulled his shoes off as she went on to say that he couldn't keep doing what he was doing, and that he couldn't push them away. He knew full well he could, and it was already happening. He was in the process of sitting back in the chair when she brought up Victoria. He sat up straight and glared at her. It was not her place to bring up Vic.
"Leave her out of this. She doesn't want anything because she's dead, alright?" He snapped at her. Jonah had never been an angry person, or one to yell, but Jo was pushing the limit of his patience right then. He didn't need some 17 year old telling him what to do with his life, or making him feel bad because he was doing what was right for her.
She kept on talking, however, and he slumped back in the chair. He closed his eyes and let his head fall back against the chair, putting his hand over his eyes. Her words were redundant and did little to make him want to change his mind. He knew that she was speaking from emotion, and wasn't thinking logically. Of course, according to what Talos had... or more correctly, hadn't said, neither was he. But it was his place to be the responsible adult and make Jo see that she needed to move on with her life and get out of Little 5 and make something of herself, not just sit around trying to piece together an old gryphon.
Looking up at her as she finished talking, he ignored the tightening in his chest from the pain of hearing Ivy's name. "Yes, Jo. I took you in, no questions asked. Yes, I am your friend, but more than that, I'm your provider. You need to be less worried about me, and more worried about where you're going to college. I'm fine. If you need more from me than what I'm giving you, then tell me. But working yourself up over me, and how I'm acting is not good for you. I told you, I'm fine." He finished his sentence and crossed his left leg over his right to wait for her to explode on him, or storm off. She was an angry teenager, that's what they did. This would all be over shortly, he was sure.
