Biography
Ages 0-5; Jonas was a blessing to his family - a miracle baby, a perfectly healthy baby boy. His parents, devout Catholics, were older when they had him and had prayed for years to be blessed with a child as sweet and beautiful as he was. From birth to kindergarten, Jonas was happy and hale, a quiet child who minded his business and was able to recite the Lord's Prayer before he could read. Or so his parents tell the story.
Ages 6-10; Unfortunately, disaster struck within the next few years of his life. At the age of 8, the Harding family was involved in a terrible car accident. All the newspapers and stories said so. But Jonas - over the years the memory had grown hazy and not quite put together. He doesn't remember the careening of a car off a bridge like the papers say, he remembers the shape of a man in the middle of the street and blood slicking through his fingers.
It was also the night he lost his sight. It was a trauma to the eyes from the accident, metal pieces scarring around his eyes. Whatever he saw, he couldn't recount.
Ages 11-15; With his parents deceased, Jonas was sent into foster care and group homes. He bounced around for most of his pre-teen years, unable to settle into one specific home. He had a number of foster brothers and sisters, a number of mothers and fathers, and even more nuns who were more keen to rap him over the knuckles with a ruler than offer him affection.
He spent the time there bouncing around, learning how to function as a newly blind person. It wasn't until he started high school that life started to ease up. His new family was a single mother with too much money and too much love to spare. It was there he was able to get the most help, but the devout Catholicism of his life didn't fade with her adoption.
They attended Sunday Mass every week, participated in church events, and he was expected to confess as often as he could.
Ages 16-20; The rest of high school was fine. It wasn't easy, nor was it as difficult as years prior. Just fine. There was bullying, there were friends. But Port Leiry isn't as big as his new mother liked to tell him. He still found himself around the other guys in the group home, who were bitter and angry and saw him as an easy target.
He doesn't like to say he was bullied, thinking himself too proud.
Tideview wasn't exactly a haven after high school, either. While he had his cane to help him navigate, it was too new, too unfamiliar for him to feel even remotely comfortable. There were too many moments where he felt he needed to scrub himself out of his skin.
Ages 21-30; A decade of time is plenty of time for someone to grow into who they wish to be. Jonas, though, struggled. He wished to help people, solve the mysteries of his past and help those who have similar stories. With a degree in criminal justice, he thought it would at least somewhat easier, but this, too was an uphill battle.
It was around graduation that he realized that he needed to follow the right cues of family life and start dating, looking into marriage and children. It was also around graduation that his roommate told him that he was in love with him. Afraid and somewhat disgusted by the thought of falling in love with a man, he fled straight into the arms of his lab partner, a nice girl who seemed shyer than most.
They married two years later, all pomp and circumstance but no emotion. He recited the vows, he pretended to love. But it was hollow.
At age 30, she left him, knowing that he was keeping something from her and telling him he was too obsessed with his history.
Ages 31-42; Another decade passed, with so much left to learn. A few months after his divorce was finalized, he approached his roommate through social media. They fell into bed together and it was the only thing in Jonas' life that had felt right, that felt like something that could be love. Only his old roommate told him it could only be a one time thing, that he'd moved on, and was marrying his boyfriend soon.
Crushed, Jonas threw himself into his work - trying and failing to forget how that night had made him feel.
It was the first and only time he'd allowed himself to try to seek comfort with another person. Instead he worked over time to get work, to try and convince clients that yes a blind man could investigate just as well as a seeing man could, while still searching for the person or thing that had killed his birth parents.
Wanted Plots
Ex-Wife (0/1); Jonas entered into a completely loveless marriage with her, thinking that it was what was right. He hurt her without meaning to and regrets not telling her the truth, if he can even manage to say it out loud to himself.
The One That Got Away (0/1); His old college roommate. This man was in love with him in college, but Jonas ran away - too afraid of how excited it made him. They slept together once years later, but Jonas was told that it would only be a one time thing as he was getting married to his boyfriend soon. Jonas thinks about him often, but doesn't expect to hear from him again anytime soon.
A Haunting (0/1) ; The person who caused the accident that took Jonas' parents away from him and blinded him at a young age. Whether it was on purpose or an accident is up to player, but Jonas was compelled at the time to think that it was a simple car accident but lately he's realizing the facts don't match up and he's trying to find more information.
Catch Me If You Can (0/1); A criminal that has eluded Jonas ever since he started working as a PI. No matter how close he gets to solving the case and catching them, they're one step ahead. He's more than obsessed with them, using the case as way to distract from his disastrous personal life.
