Comps for my in progress mobile portfolio site! It’s supposed to be a jQuery mobile exercise, but I’ve found JQM to be mad overkill for what I’m doing with it. So I decided to go with the HTML5 mobile boilerplate instead, using media queries and some JS scripts for image size optimization. Just trying to figure out the best way to replicate that jQuery AJAX page loading transition from scratch…

This is my life right now.
Another quick animation messing around with MoGraph and the spring connector, along with a bit of Xpresso to create the physical spring itself. The Xpresso basically just dynamically changes the height of a helix spline based on the positions of the two platforms. It needed some audio, so I obviously had to use the Inception theme.
Nickelodeon Bumper
So back in the Fall, we were all given an .eps of the Nickelodeon logo and told to make a short TV bumper using only the letters of the logo. The timeline was about three weeks, from concept to final project. After spending probably a week of that going through a bunch of crappy ideas, I finally settled on one I liked and storyboarded it out:
Character animation is something we don't do terribly often, so I had to figure out a workflow to make the process as easy as possible. Luckily, it's pretty easy to bring in vector paths to After Effects - just copy and paste them on a solid and they're read in as a mask, with fully editable vertices. With this figured out, I decided to edit the letterforms themselves in Illustrator - I manipulated the original letters to draw out the major poses, and then brought them into After Effects to do most of the tweening work for me. There still needed to be poses about every 5-10 frames, with occasional extra tweaks...but that's much better than frame-by-frame.
After that was all figured out, production was more or less painless - just a matter of sitting down and pouring a few dozen hours into animating.
Quick 5-second animation demonstrating some Xpresso-driven animation! Looked up the mechanics of a desktop Stirling engine, modeled it, and rigged up the piston motion using some constraint tags. Then I stumbled upon an awesome implementation of a similar, but slightly different Stirling engine hooked up to a ferris wheel, and I pretty much had to make it. So I modeled the ferris wheel and quickly hooked up its rotation to the engine!

So after over a quarter of telling myself I’d make a blog to put all of my work on, it’s finally happened! Pretty excited to get everything up here…especially some of the smaller assignments. The plan is to have experiments and small assignments up in the “labs” portion of the blog, while I slowly add my entire backlog of projects to the “projects” section. We'll see how it goes.
