I will try and make this the last thing I post today but… here’s my opinions so far, which can always change depending on new information, new arguments and how the show ends, of course.

This episode was written by a gay man. Of course I realise that gay people can be homophobic, or have internalised homophobia, but it does make me very reluctant to describe the episode as homophobic without having all the facts, which we currently do not have.

I feel like it might have been quite a struggle to even give us the scene that we got. The CW is not the most progressive network out there, and giving us the canon destiel we wanted sooner would have been next to impossible. I don’t know exactly what goes on behind the scenes, how these things work or how things like this get greenlit, but I think there’s a decent chance that it wasn’t easy, and the only way they could get it greenlit was to do it in this way, and have Cas die afterwards, or have it unreciprocated. If you’re going to be angry at anyone, blame the network, not Berens.

This doesn’t mean we can’t fight for better. That doesn’t mean we can’t be angry about the lack of representation on TV shows, or tropes like bury your gays, because anger is how we make change. But we can still count this as a win and I am going to count this as a win. I would far rather this than for them to kill Cas off and leave destiel forgotten and ignored. Castiel is officially one of very few canon bi/pan male (or at least male coded) lead characters in a mainstream TV show. This is progress and although I am devastated he’s gone, I am overjoyed that we at least had this. Also, there’s a small chance he may be back for the finale, or at least he may get a better ending rather than the Empty (which isn’t hell, for everyone saying it is).

Fight for better, but celebrate every win.
