I think the worst part about being on the aro-ace spectrum is knowing you’ll probably never be anyone’s first choice. Like. I love my friends and I’d like to think they still love me, but compared to their partners (current or hypothetical future ones) I’ll always be at least second. And it’s fine, I don’t expect to be above someone who they love so much they want to spend the rest of their life with, but just knowing every allo person is a first choice to someone else and I never will be? ,,, kinda sucks,, :/

I think Elizabeth Bennet and Charlotte Lucas are subliminally the same person, right down to the fact that neither one of them is supposed to be very rich or desirable as a potential wife, or very beautiful or romantic. Charlotte is, if you will, the realistic, unromantic version of Elizabeth and Charlotte's trajectory is a foreshadowing of what Elizabeth's marriage is going to be like.

The paralels between Mr. Collins' and Mr. Darcy's proposals strengthen this. Elizabeth rejects them both for similar reasons, Mr. Darcy's being of the two proposals I would argue the worst. But then considering they are the main couple their relationship has to have a slower burn than Charlotte's, who accepts the proposal straight away.

Charlotte Lucas settles for Mr. Collins because she knows she can't aspire to more and is resigned to this fact. She only wants to have a household of her own and to continue to be a respectable lady of the gentry - all things that Mr. Collins can give her with a minimum of sacrifice on her part. All she has to do is to avoid him as much as possible for the rest of their marriage and she'll be very happy. What are men when compared to nice books and a garden?

Elizabeth and Darcy were never suited to one another, she being a woman who likes to rib him and say what she thinks, he someone who is very stiff and easily offended and full of his own importance. But if Charlotte can avoid her husband in their small parsonage Elizabeth won't find it too difficult to hide from Darcy in their spacious palacial home.
