Foodzyk @ Coastal Cafe
Coastal Cafe has one of the best breakfasts in Halifax and any weekend morning I can guarantee that you’ll wait in a line for a table.
The hype isn’t all for nothing, though. They have some really unique spins on the usual breakfast favourites.
Huevos Rancheros with Habanero Buffalo Chicken. Real good. I was expecting it to be a lot spicier than it was. I would rate it on a medium heat that gives you a kick a few minutes later. It’s awesome.
This is The Elvis. Peanut butter, banana, bacon, and maple syrup sandwiched between two fresh buttermilk waffles. Also very good, but could use something extra. Like that Habanero Buffalo Chicken. Yeah.
This place is good and should be a place you definitely check out in Halifax.

Foodzyk @ Kitsune Food Co
Kitsune Food Co. is a small sushi restaurant in the North End of Halifax. Owned and operated by two friendly chefs, they’re serving some fantastic sushi in a really cool environment at an extremely fair price.
Dynamite Roll, Spicy Salmon Roll, and Yam Tempura Roll. The shrimp in the Dynamite Roll was cooked perfectly, which made me realize I’ve been eating shrimp wrong my entire life.
Pork Dumplings and Tofu Dumplings. Really great stuff, perfect texture and consistency. If you’re not a vegetarian I recommend getting the pork.
Note: plan on having your meal to go, because the place is extremely small (only two seats), but offers an intimate atmosphere where you can witness the construction of some awesome sushi and enjoy a conversation with the two owners, and possibly the other person you’re with, depending on how you feel about them I guess.
Here’s the view from the bar stools. As you can see, tight but magical. I’ve heard the Kara-aghe is unbelievable and I’ll definitely be back to check it out.
Foodzyk @ Lot Six
Last Saturday I went out for dinner with some friends to a casual fine-dining spot called Lot Six. The menu consists of traditional cuisine and some phenomenal handcrafted cocktails.
To start, I ordered the Crab Cakes accompanied by a side of Tarragon & Roasted Corn Salsa and a Wasabi Remoulade. The cakes were crispy on the outside and meaty on the inside. Originally, I had thought the wasabi remoulade would be too spicy for my baby taste buds, but it actually complimented the cakes perfectly.
For my main, I ordered the Pork Belly, which is slow cooked and sits atop a Poached Gala Apple & Braised Cabbage slaw. I fucking love pork belly and had thought that it may have been a small portion size, but our wonderful waitress assured me that I would be full. She was right.
The slow cooked belly pulled apart without any assistance from my knife. The meat was extremely tender but charred to perfection.
To finish off the meal, I ordered the Apple Caramel Cake, which was served warm with fresh vanilla ice cream and a cheddar crisp to top it all off. If you haven’t had cheese with your apple pie before, I don’t know what is wrong with you. Go melt some cheese on your pie. Right now.
All in all, I was really impressed with Lot 6. Our meal lasted about 2 hours, but we never waited long for our food and we enjoyed some pretty fantastic cocktails. When it was all said and done, the damage was $105 with tip. For three courses and five hand-made cocktails, you can’t complain about that pricing!
Happy birthday @tjrogers! Switch 360 from 1998...or was it last September? #skateboarding (at Commerce Court)
What the TIBS is that?
This place is called TIBS or Two If By Sea Cafe and they’ve got some pretty fucked up croissants.
Made fresh every day and usually sold out by noon, you’ve got to be an early riser if you want a choice between plain, chocolate, almond, prosciutto and provolone, or the weekly special.
I went with my dawgs and was able to sample a little bit of everything. The croissants are pretty awesome and probably require a stick of butter per. Super dense, yet extremely fluffy, you’ve gotta check it out. I had the prosciutto and provolone and it was extremely filling. I had banked on getting a second croissant but couldn’t possibly eat another. For a $5 croissant, it’s well worth it.
My ham & prosciutto croissant + capuccino
Croissant of the week: Pumpkin cream cheese. This was definitely the best of them all.
Inside of the chocolate croissant. Look at those layers.
The Return of Foodzyk
After an unbelievably long hiatus, I’ve decided to revive my food blog, Foodzyk. I’m going to be posting a few times a week of meals I eat out and stuff that I cook.
People always said they liked how blunt the reviews are, so I guess I’ll keep that up. Anyway, look forward to more Foodzyk in your life.
This first post is from lunch at The Tall & Small Cafe in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Famous for their sandwiches served on freshly baked focaccia bread, it’s definitely a spot you should check out if you find yourself in the town.
I grabbed the Turkey Pesto Sandwich and a side of their soup of the day, which was African Peanut. The sandwich was awesome, full of flavour with super soft bread. The soup was alright, it tastes exactly what you think it would: peanut butter and vegetable stock. It definitely needed some more flavour. After a few spoonfuls I gagged and gave it to Sean, who said he liked it. So I don’t know, maybe you’d like it, maybe you won’t.
Outland FNR Program
The last two summers I've had the opportunity to be a part of an amazing program with Outland Camps for First Nations Youth from across Northern Ontario. This past year I documented the program and put together a video for Outland to use in order to gain more community partners. Enjoy! https://vimeo.com/185761196/

All of a sudden I've become intrigued by matching skateboarding with unconventional music. Also inspired by a montage Anthony McManus made a decade ago. All old footage in a new light. Enjoy, friends.
