The Society of British Theatre Designers are displacing their new national exhibition in collaboration with Victoria and Albert Museum and Nottingham Trent University. It is of course, an honour to all theatre design students to have this exhibition held at our place of study. These are some images of some of the very talented pieces i saw at the exhibition, with work from Es Devlin, Alex Eales, Amelia Jane, Joanna Scotcher and many more.
Year Two, Term Two
Nottingham's Theatre Royal are preparing for a community performance of The School For Scandal adapted by David Longford, to celebrate their 150th year with their first ever performance of SFS which was shown in 1865.
We have been asked to design costumes for all characters in the performance, and submit our favoured design to David Longford at the end of the project.
This is a collection of the process of my costume designs for this performance so far..

18 Th Century Clothing
These are photographs of a rough costume I created and pinned to a wooden mannequin after conducting research into 18th century women's clothing. I wanted to show the key shapes to the costume, such as the voluminous skirt, the small waist and the broad yet flat chest.

Research taken from my copy of 'Fantastic Fashion' by Barbara Cox. I particularly found interesting these two comical pieces of artwork inspired by 18 Th Century wigs and head dress.

Research into 18th century fashion for both men and women, taking from my copy of 'Fashion from the 18 TH to the 20 TH century', by the Kyoto Costume Institute. I've also taken a look into 18 TH century accessories, such as the hand fan.

18 Th Century Corsets
Day Five of skills week was an attempt to finish the corset, including any finishing touches such as shoulder straps and basting the top of the corset including and alternations.

Day Four of skills week, I made holes in the back section of the fabric using an awl tool where the eyelets holes had been marked, then pierced the fabric with the eyelet punch so I could fit the eyelets and the washers.

Day Three of skills week was centred around completing the boning channels of the corsets and adding the eyelets.
I laid the pattern template over the fabric and marked the tops of the boning channels onto the fabric with a pencil and lined the marks up with a ruler and a soft pencil line. To display the hidden bones on the pattern I used tailors tacks through the paper and fabric.

Day Two of skills week, began with marking the boning channels on the corset templates on pattern paper, adding spaces for boning channels at approx 7mm and 6mm for eyelets. I then transferred the markings to fabric. The next step was basting the fabric together, by pinning the fabric together and basting with tacking thread.
Costume design project - Skills Week - 18 Th Century Corsets
Day One of the skills week, we were introduced to basic 18th century corsets and their aim to bring in the waist, flatten the bust and stomach.
In pairs we took measurements of the cross back, cross chest, waist, bust, nape to waist, nape to bust, nape to under bust, nape to front waist and shoulder length.
We then padded out a mannequin to our partners measurements, and draped the fabric over the mannequin, smoothing down the sides and pinning into place. Layering the grain line alone the centre line of the front of the mannequin. Marking with pins down the side seam and waist line, chopping excess pieces of fabric, leaving a seam allowance.
I then traced the fabric pieces on pattern paper using a cutting wheel and carbon paper, leaving space down the centre back for boning channels and eyelet holes.
These are auto cad drawings I completed of the previous photos I posted from the dress circle at the Nottingham Theatre Royal.

After our talk with David Longford at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham, I picked up a few fashion magazines to use alongside my research into 18th century costume, to work with the two. For this rough pen sketch of the clown from school for scandal I wanted to encorporate a feel of something along the lines of Laurel and Hardy, the famous comics of the early 19century, with the modern trend of monochrome.

These are photographs taken inside The Theatre Royal, in some of the areas in which the promenade performance will be held. This collection of images and my own sketches of the layout and detail of the spaces will be useless when thinking about colour schemes and placing costumes etc.

As The School for Scandal promenade performance is being held in and around the grounds for The Nottingham Theatre Royal, we were advised to take a look round the exterior of the building in all its glory to get a feel of how it looks from every angle.
Year Two, Term Two Narratives in Text and Dress
This project aims to explore the semiotics and imagery of 18th century European dress and theatre whilst working with the chosen script of the adaptation of The School for Scandal by David Longford.
In terms of costume, i imagined the clowns to not be the typical party clowns with the red nose and baggy stripy trousers, but comical over exaggerated business men, similar to Charlie Chaplin the famous comic and film maker from the late 18th to early 19th century, or Laurel and Hardy, for example.
IRP 2 - Applied Theatre Research
My chosen subject for my second individual research project, is how to use animals in applied theatre.
I initially started researching into modern day performances which included animals among the cast.
The two gentlemen of Verona is currently being shown and I read up about this on their website. I found this video interesting called "The dog cam" based on the dog Crabs from the play.
