Final Abstract
"Formation" renovates existing primary school classrooms to challenge the historical and modern standard learning environment. The design seeks to gain more flexibility for children and teachers. It employs function, form and materiality to create a space which invites spatial participation through sensory involvement. This aims to foster a more effective relationship with learning spaces by establishing a sense of ownership that allows occupants to continuously interact with and transform their space.

Materials
Ability to build upon and change the materiality of the space.
-Different materials such as PVC vinyls, carpets, and assroted materials which can be rotated/changed
Form

-Miscellaneous Materials with magnetic inserts
-Two 2 x 7m carpet rolls
Magnetic System

Strong Magnets
-Magnets in the ends of the ladder to guide it into the slots for the mezzanine.
Developments
-Added floor storage for other elements. Push release button, level with floor, paintable.
-Edited the mezzanine wall so that it can go up and to mid point but not to the floor as it would not go there anyway. This freed up more wall space for additions.
-New spatial “furniture” elements. Magnetic connection system, building frames, materials, mats, whiteboards etc,
-Changing of the wall textures in the sliding recesses. Changed to the same as the wall, can be painted, magnetic so can be altered as the occupants require/see fit
-Lighting functions reduced, cranks removed due to inefficiency and likelihood that the mechanism would be inefficient. With only 3 lights in adjacent position it would not have the desired effect.
-Hill transition on both sides
-Magnets in the end of the ladder so it is more easily installed on the mezzanine
-Material of the mezzanine ladder, wood look but is made out of a lighter material which makes installation easier. (Polycarbonate - which is strong and durable and lightweight
Learning
SYSTEMS
All of the system have been considered for easy use and use within the space.
Magnetic Connection system:
By using the same magnetic connection technique with all of the elements in the space, it creates more options and combination of elements. The space can then be more easily accessible and be able to be used in more ways than it could if the systems used were all different.
Push/Slide:
The spatial elements use a push/slide system for easy use and efficient use of space.
LEARNING
What can be learned in the space and how?
The building blocks of the space aim to teach and aid learning as they are used and configured in the space. The students consider what they need at that particular time, for themselves and how they learn best. They can learn from the different components in indirect way. They are not just simply there to be built so that typical learning happens once they have been.
THINK - Add, subtract, write, ask, question, read
MAKE - Build/Construct, Draw, Paint, Join
MOVE - Dance, Build, Run, Walk, Jump, Climb
Problem Solving - Limitations of the space and the occupants themselves, building the elements of the space and deciding what is needed for a specific task or moment
Responsibility - Safety in the space, care of the space, care of spatial elements
Respect - Ownership of the space creates a more direct relationship with the space and therefore generates respect, consideration for others in the space
Teamwork - Collaboration through shared space, constructing elements
Numeracy - counting the elements, figuring out how any are being used, how many total, how many for each structure
Construction (Making) - Engineering to make the structure out of the furniture elements, forts
Engineering - Mezzanine, building space elements
Writing - Using tools to write, whiteboards, paper
Physics - Magnetic System, what the magnets can and cannot hold,

Whiteboard Squares
The size of the storage compartment can fit around 50 whiteboard leaves.
-This gives enough for every student a minimum of 1-2 to use if needed and the large quantity allows fro them to be used in larger configurations.
