Annotation 6: On the function of the United States paparazzi : celebrity image control and power

In this article the author discuss paparazzi and what role they play dealing with celebrities. When you think about celebrity image paparazzi is known for  aggressively invading the personal lives of famous people just to post it on the media. The author states that the celebrity deserves as much privacy in their personal life as the common man. However normally a lot of celebrities hide many personal things that they do not want exposed to the media to protect their image. and the paparazzi is known for revealing the true expect that you don’t get to see from celebrities. so in a way the Paparazzi helps reveal celebrity true image. The problem is that so photographers may mislead some photos to get more publicity and it interferes with the true image of the celebrity by posting the photo with a heading that has nothing to do with the celebrity.

This article is helpful for my writing because it a great key point that paparazzi can reveal the true image of a celebrity but you have to be careful the credibility in the source. It also points out how celebrity image is large influenced a lot of outside forces and can by hard to remain authentic when you have the media judging you for everything you do and do not do.

Your description of this article regarding the paparazzi was powerful. I think you made very strong, clear points regarding the ways people can be portrayed, and mislead by a picture and a caption that accompanies it. It’s important to think how would you feel about a picture if it did not have an attention grabbing headline attached to it? The magazines often grasp the consumers attention by the headlines, generally not the photograph on the cover. Awesome topic, good luck on your final paper.

This is a great source! The paparazzi is always trying to get that winning shot, because that is how they get paid. They will stop at nothing, even if it means taking a photo that will mislead the public, to make money. You are right, these photos of the celebrities have a huge impact on our culture. Everyone is forever grabbing the tabloids and Peoples magazines.

What very true words. A small example of this was a rumor from an article written a couple weeks ago, quoting Matthew McConaughey saying he was moving to Virginia Beach during an interview. It proved to be false later as another state had gotten similar news about McConaughey moving to their own area. Although the example didn’t speak on the celebrity’s authenticity, it does speak on the credibility of the media which I too believe is important. They control the celebrity’s image to society and that does affect how we determine their authenticity. I like your source.

Garcia, A. (2013). Beautiful Dark Twisted Pedagogy: Kanye West and the Lessons of Participatory Culture. Radical Teacher Rt, 97, 30. Retrieved March 22, 2016.

This article goes into detail explaining Kanye West’s album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. It explains the culture around it and how Kanye used different resources to get opinions from fans but also provide content to his fans. It also goes into detail about some of the songs off the album and what the lyrics mean and the message that West is trying to get across.

This is a very helpful article because it talks about that time period of West’s life. It shows the different things he experimented with and what made him authentic in that matter.

This is interesting how he used his fanbase to develop messages. I was unaware that any artist, let alone Kanye provided access to the details and content of they song, or message he was implying. Many time an artist message can be misconstrued or misinterpreted by the consumers, and providing the exact message they were trying to achieve can control the interpretation of one’s music. I feel this is a great source. I am not a huge fan of Kanye West, but for him to use his real life stories and experiences and incorporate that into his music is by far authentic in my opinion. That makes that music truly his because it contains his real life experiences and stories.

Rohin Guha proposed a question on whether pop stars had killed the rock star. An individual of example they wrote on was Britney Spears. Guha spoke on how the marketing of her breakdown was a major component in the recipe future pop artists would adopt as a business model. U2, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones, who were legacy act in rock, would continue making music that only sold to fans who were with them during earlier points in their careers. In effect, Guha states that it’s really pop stars who we expect to challenge and thrill us. Rock music had become somewhat dull and in making it there was “very little experimentation and room for failure”.

This is an article I can utilize when speaking about the difference between pop stars and rock stars today and their current standing in the industry. Pop stars use a very different set of tools when it comes to the popularity of their music as opposed to rock stars who didn’t tend to utilize their daily lives for theirs.

In this music video, a live show is performed in Madison Square Garden in 1973 by a rock band known as Led Zeppelin. The footage is from their concert film “The Song Remains The Same” where the group (Robert Plant - Lead Vocals, Jimmy Page - Guitar, Jon Bonham - Drums, John Paul Jones - Keyboard/Bass Guitar) performs there song “Since I’ve Been Loving You”.

This live performance by Led Zeppelin, I believe, can serve as an exceptional example of one perception an individual can have on rock stars. During the course of the assignments I have worked on so far, my understanding of the term “rock star” has broadened and this video stands as solid representation of what I believed was the standard for the term initially.

Shumway, D. R. (2014). Rock Star: The Making of Musical Icons From Elvis to Springsteen. Baltimore, MD: Johns Hopkins University Press.

David Shumway discusses the meaning of stardom and rock icons. In this eBook, Shumway studies the careers of seven rock stars in popular music and culture (Elvis Presley, James Brown, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell, and Bruce Springsteen) and contrasts them, stating their differences from mere celebrities. Rock stars, in his definition, were key cultural heroes and icons of change. 

I believe this eBook will be useful because Shumway compares various artists and discusses their histories, bringing more depth towards a definition for a rock star.

Annotation #2, Pop Culture Artifact #1

This was a brief interview by Sam Jones and he asked Dave Grohl to share his impressions on the standing of rock music at the time. Jones began by informing the rock star of a lack of competition in the genre, leading to his question on whether Grohl has ever thought about the situation. In response, Dave Grohl explained that there seemed to be a moment in time where rock music suffered a backlash after the punk rock sub-genre and that what was commercially acceptable in their music had now been considered “bad or wrong”. He reasoned that that had never been the goal or the intention at times.

Today, Dave Grohl and his band “The Foo Fighters”, stands tall in current rock. It was good to hear his opinion as it explained to me what he believed changed rock and played as a factor in the transition of what music is today. I found this interview to be very applicable to my argument on the stance of rock music in current pop culture.

Gabrielle Decastro & Joshua Achin 

Gibson, Michael. “That’s Hip-Hop to Me: Race, Space, and Temporal Logics of Authenticity in Independent Cultural Production” Poetics (2014)

The article, “That’s Hip-Hop to me”, discusses how authenticity interplays with how artists take different approaches in presenting themselves. Michael Gibson begins this article by contending that authenticity itself is a social construct. That said, since authenticity is a social construct, there are varying parameters and criteria as to what it means to be authentic. Michael Gibson further delves into this idea by focusing on the hip-hop scene in the Midwest and illustrating how different communities define authenticity in different ways. For example, a present-based group will base authenticity on “contemporary aesthetics” whereas a future based group would consider something cutting-edge as authentic (42).

This article can be easily utilized for this paper because the author takes a nuanced stance on what authenticity is. In today’s mainstream culture, many people are penalized for lacking authenticity when in reality it is not an easy thing to achieve. As a culture, we are constantly redefining what it means to be authentic. Therefore, it is imperative to understand these changes. This article shines light on authenticity

First Post

Since the class has just begun, I have yet to fully understand what the class and class content is all about. We have only gone over the syllabus last class. However, I do love writing so I am excited to delve into this class. Simultaneously, since I already have a tumblr I decided to just create this specific tumblr account under my main account. Since the last class I’ve been trying to come up with the song I want to present for the “Best Song Ever” assignment. Once I get a better grasp on what we are going to be learning in this class, I can update this blog post to answer the last part of the prompt. Since I do not exactly know what the content of this class will be yet, I cannot say where I account the class material in my daily life. I’m sure I will be able to though.

This is a writing class right ? Since this is a writing class, I decided to post a picture of my favorite books. Over the summer as a receptionist, I spent a lot of time reading which helped me improve on my writing skills a bit. Therefore, I am posting a picture of some of my favorite books that I own because I relate reading to writing. This is also my desk and I write and do my homework on it. The only answer I have to offer is an honest one. We just started Monday and there isn’t much to answer this with yet. However, I am honestly excited for the inevitable loads of experiences to come during the course. I did notice some Tenacious D on the board during class. Jack Black is bae. He is accounted in errthang in my daily life. Nacho Libre was the best movie of all time.
